I tend to agree, although you'd also expect to see a lot of "Ooh, if I found that sleeping I'd totally hit it" etc...

Strangely enough, I've seen serious posts/vids etc before dealt with incredibly well by random anons including obits for WoW players, or a community coming together like the building of a playground in EQ2 for a terminal child. We tend to remember the worst, but there's plenty of supportive people out there who's first instinct isn't to heap shit on a person.

I'm just thankful that I've been relatively healthy all my life. I can't imagine what it would be like to have this hanging over your head (or indeed, any one of a number of chronic conditions).

To me that clinched it. You don't have to like his politics but shitting on Vonnegut is like the Irish shitting on Samuel Beckett's political leanings. A great writer is a great writer...doesn't matter what he believes it's how he puts it.

This point was made also by Fry defending his selection of Jeremy Clarkson on several episodes of Qi. Fry said essentially that Clarkson may be tiresome and irritating with beliefs, but he simply writes too well for him to just be ignored.

You may not like Vonnegut...but whether it's an obit or a critique, you have to respect the abilities of such a great American writer.

Almost like his last two lines were the ones that he would want on his obit. The guy had some major chops with some of his lines. Very, very clever in a non-lateral way.

^I'm contemplating writing you an obituary that incorporates just that... would be awesome. Sad thing about obituaries is that you'd probably be dead, so you can't enjoy it! I want a George Carlin-esque obit, myself:

"Today a man was found hanging in his garage. His suicide note said the following: 'Hello. If you're reading this, I'm out in the garage. I'm the dead body hanging from the rafter. You people drove me to this. Fuck you. You'll notice all your favorite things are lying directly beneath my body and that I'm not wearing pants. You'll no doubt notice the very empty pot of beans in the kitchen too... happy spring cleaning."

That would be a grand legacy.
