W, V, U or L: How Is the Economic Recovery Shaping Up?

Peroxide says...

skip to 3:54 for the only useful graph in this video.

And don't forget kiddies, economists tell us there is a structural rate of unemployment that is perfectly normal! Hooray!

Also, "Hidden, or covered, unemployment is the unemployment of potential workers that is not reflected in official unemployment statistics, due to the way the statistics are collected. In many countries only those who have no work but are actively looking for work (and/or qualifying for social security benefits) are counted as unemployed. Those who have given up looking for work (and sometimes those who are on Government "retraining" programs) are not officially counted among the unemployed, even though they are not employed. The same applies to those who have taken early retirement to avoid being laid off, but would prefer to be working. The statistic also does not count the "underemployed" - those with part time or seasonal jobs who would rather have full time jobs. In addition, those who are of working age but are currently in full-time education are usually not considered unemployed in government statistics. Because of hidden unemployment, official statistics often underestimate unemployment rates."- wiki

Herman Cain on Occupy Wall Street

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

What do they want?

http://occupywallst.org/forum/proposed-list-of-demands-for-occupy-wall-st-moveme/

There you go.

9/9/9 plan … followers are too stupid to realize he's talking about raising taxes.

No – his plan is a staged plan moving towards a fair tax with 9/9/9 as a starting point. Everyone is aware of what it is because it clear, simple, and down on paper. This is in stark contrast to Democrats who want to raise taxes on the middle class but are saying they only want to tax 'millionaires and billionaires’ as with the Obama tax scheme that he calls a ‘jobs bill’.

starting today, the media will go back to ignoring them, on the grounds that now they're just a front for Unions and Democratic political organizations. In other words, at the first signs that this protest might align with a broader liberal agenda, they'll go back to dismissing them

This is just one of those areas where you are going to have to admit you are completely off target Net. The presence of union & other radical leftists REINFORCES the image of these whackos in the minds of the media. You said the media would ignore the protestors 'starting today'. This morning on the news I saw no fewer than FIVE different stories on three networks about the protests ‘ratcheting up’, ‘spreading’, et al. The media coverage isn’t decreasing. It is increasing.

There is no secret about why this is the case. It is because the majority of the media is dominated by leftist sympathizers, and so they naturally gravitate towards these other leftists. For the media, the ‘occupiers’ are a romantic throwback to their own liberal college days. They love these schmucks.

Consider how they treat them. In almost every story the occupiers are given actual SERIOUS consideration. The reporters do not challenge them or their ideas. The reporters slant the stories so that the protestors are shown in a sympathetic light. The media hides away their crazy signs, their lunatic fringes, their violent chants, their anti-american Marxist speakers, their illegal street and sidewalk blockings, and all the other bad things they do or say. But they broadcast ad-nauseum the vids of the cops arresting them as they wail and cry about how they are ‘peaceful’… There are puff peice stories about them needing blankets, and food. Boo hoo hoo.

Now think back again and recall how the very same media treats the Tea Party. From the beginning, the media has tagged the Tea Party as astroturf, racist, hate-fuelled, radical, fringe purveyors of violence. They’ve gone out of their way to paint the Tea Partiers as crazy, evil dupes of the vast Right Wing Conspiracy. Interviews with TP members routinely come from a position of antagonism or outright hostility. Media goes out of their way to find ignore huge crowds of rational, everyday normal folks and thier simple message of fiscal responsibility. But if there's ONE bozo at a rally acting like an @$$hole with a "Obama is Hitler" sign then the media will devote whole news segments to that guy and try to make it look like he is the rule rather than the exception.

Two different protest groups. Two completely different styles of media treatment. And all because the news media is dominated by an east-coast knee-jerk position of leftist philosophy. They say they are unbiased - but talk is cheap. When talk ISN'T cheap, they prove they are biased. Almost 90% of all news media donations to political candidates in 2008 were to Democrats. When was the last time you were in ANY population that was so lopsided? In any normal population, you'll have like 40% GOP, 40% Democrat, and 20% 'other'. The news media is so slanted to the left that it is hard to find any other group quite as radically lopsided and not officially a 'cult'.

As far as Cain goes - he's 100% right. These bozos are attacking the wrong target. If you want to succeed in life you don't go about it by blaming others. You do it by rolling up your sleeves and going to work. The bulk of these protesters are lily-white college doofuses who have never had a real job. Maybe they should try it before they go hatin' on it.

Sorry Net – but you’re wrong on this and today’s media treatment alone proves it.

Bill Maher Stands By Mohammed Remarks

Mysling says...

They seem eager to adopt Sharia law? I thought they only allowed it certain minor cases. Still, they dont have a bill of rights or a constitution. But, Sharia Law to take over? I wonder what their official religion, The Church of England thinks of that.

That is my understanding as well. Additionally, any judgements passed by a sharia court in Britain is not officially recognized by the state. Verdicts only stand as an unofficial agreement between the parties involved. Also, any case tried in a sharia court can also be tried in an official court at any time, if any of the parties desire so.

Sharia courts in Britain are a gesture of good faith toward islamic communities, giving them the opportunity to resolve matters within a judicial system they feel more comforable with. But they carry no weight.

Great Moments in Democrat Racist History: FDR

9547bis says...

Also, I have something for Blacksphere's Uncle T. Junior here:
http://www.blackpast.org/files/blackpast_images/caliver_ambrose.jpg

Of course I could have pulled a picture of FDR in a crowd with some black people in it, but I thought something like this would be more interesting:

President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed an unprecedented number of African Americans to high positions. By mid-1935, forty-five had positions in cabinet offices and New Deal agencies. In 1936, this group began calling itself the Federal Council on Negro Affairs. Although these leaders were not officially cabinet members, their role in advising the President on black employment, education, and civil rights issues led the press to refer to them as FDR's "Black Cabinet" or the "Black Brain Trust."

Public marriage proposals... GONE WRONG

Morganth says...

"Will you marry me" isn't supposed to be an open-ended question. Private is fine, public is fine. The point is, you 100% know the answer before you ask the girl. You should have already talked about it plenty (though not "officially" asked her yet). For something like this to work, you should be at a point in the relationship where she's already expecting the question and just wondering when and how you will ask - where's she's already made up her mind before you ask. Putting her on the spot is a huge mistake.

And if you think I'm off my rocker, I'm from the South. Yes, it really is a different culture than the rest of the U.S., but I thoroughly love it.

The 912 Teabagger Assault on Washington

xxovercastxx says...

>> ^Mashiki:
>> ^xxovercastxx:
The DCFD PIO estimated the crowd at 60k-75k people.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9/12_March_on_Washington

They're not qualified to give out estimated crowd numbers. National Parks and Rec(search it and they are qualified) gave upwards of 1.2m, personally I'd put it at somewhere between 790k-1.2m, based on the 'presidential ticket estimate map' of 3.5sqft per person.

Took you up on your suggestion and did that search then looked for a site I felt I could trust to report honestly. Wound up with this TPM article:

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/freedomworks-cuts-estimate-for-crowd-at-its-912-rally-by-one-half.php

Found echoes of these statements in other articles as well:

The DCFD has not officially given an estimate and the person from the DCFD who made the statement was neither authorized nor qualified to do so. Parks & Rec has not given any estimates despite reports of them claiming 1.5m - 2.0m. The only source I've found anyone giving for those claims was on Michelle Malkin's site who cited this. I still can't believe anyone would cite that as a source.

Conservatives are using pictures from different events to artificially inflate the crowd. They're also using photos of people marching to the Capitol several blocks away and pretending the crowd was packed solid from there to the Capitol.

Liberals are being just as dishonest, unsurprisingly, using photos from cleanup after the event and presenting them as the crowd at its peak.

I doubt we'll get a real estimate at this point. Even if we do, it'll be filtered through the exaggeration machine before it gets to us.

A faithful Mormon speaks out against Prop 8 in Church...

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

I'm never 'inflammatory'. I'm always reasonable. The only thing I ever do is calmly and rationally make a point which other people choose to be inflammatory against. I myself rarely (if ever) make an argument personal. I'll strongly make my case, and I'm not afraid to point out hypocrisy and bigotry when I see it.

In this case, we have a bunch of people in this thread that are Mormon bashing. They claim it is 'official church policy' to cut off family members. All I have done is clearly state the facts. It is not official church policy to do anything of the sort, and anyone who IS doing such things is either (A) not LDS at all or (B) not a very good practicioner of thier faith. I fail to see how such an argument could possibly be 'inflammatory' except to a person who is bigoted and has an axe to grind.

seen your posts elsewhere

M'eh - if you find the prolix nature of my text to cumbersome or weighty to digest then feel free to move on. Addressing an issue requires thought. I am not a flippant, unthinking debator who is satisfied with simply making unsupported, profane accusations and calling it an 'argument'.

the whole point of the meeting (since the church's early days) is to allow the congregation their opportunity to be heard

From my understanding, it is also not considered a place for free-wheeling political arguments or discourse. Sunday worship services are places where people come to be uplifted, share faith building experiences, or otherwise console & strengthen each other. It is not the place to get up and tell everyone how much you think everyone sucks, or how great your new car is, or whatever crap you have dribbling out your mind. People going 'off topic' like that shouldn't be surprised to have the mic cut & the bishop tug at their sleeve to take it off-line.

Their website says that LDS meetings have 3 divisions of an hour each. The meeting he got up in looks like their first one where they take their sacraments. That's not the spot for his little stunt. There's Sunday School meeting where church doctrines get discussed, and another one they call 'priesthood' or 'relief society' where men & women get split up. If he had something to get off his chest, then Sunday School or Priesthood was the place for it. Not a meeting with children and youth. Ideally, this kind of discussion is more logically done with a Bishop in private. The fact that he lined up a cameraman and had his whole speech written out proves he wasn't making a heart-felt confession. He was out for attention.

Nice! Glad to hear the Baldies are doing well up there. I just looked up Steller's Jay. That's a neat looking bird. I forgot to mention Red-Tailed hawk. I like this picture of the American Kestrel...

Someone's gonna get eaten.

I wasn't really interested in birds when I was younger but then I moved to Tokyo for 8 years where the only birds (and pretty much the only wildlife) were crows, sparrows, and pigeons. When I moved back to Canada, about a year ago, I suddenly found myself fascinated with nature and wildlife (I think it's a reaction to having none around for so long). So I've been taking a lot of nature walks and hikes and encountering a lot of beautiful and interesting looking birds, but unfortunately I usually don't know what their called.

The ones I do know the names of that I've seen around are:
- Bald Eagles, we have A LOT of these around here and I've seen quite a few juveniles this summer.
- Blue Heron
- American Kestrel
- Steller's Jay
- and some hummingbirds that feed at the flowers behind my place.

Although not officially a birder, i have seen the following in the area behind my house: Merganzers, Cormorants, Grackles, Kingfishers, Blue Heron and Bald Eagles. And Owls.

How 'bout you?
