True Detective: Rust's existential musings about religion

Trancecoach says...

"Irrevocable commitment to any religion is not only intellectual suicide; it is positive unfaith because it closes the mind to any new vision of the world. Faith is, above all, open-ness — an act of trust in the unknown.

"No considerate God would destroy the human mind by making it so rigid and unadaptable as to depend upon one book, the Bible, for all the answers. For the use of words, and thus of a book, is to point beyond themselves to a world of life and experience that is not mere words or even ideas. Just as money is not real, consumable wealth, books are not life. To idolize scriptures is like eating paper currency."

Kevin O'Leary on global inequality: "It's fantastic!"

A few years ago this guy was a nobody insofar as the media was concerned. Then he started playing the 'baddie' on Shark Tank and the Canadian version of Dragons' Den.
I think this guy is borrowing a page from the likes of Ann Coulter and other right-wing talking heads. Essentially, they are media whores who know that controversy helps to sell their books, programs, lecture circuit, investments... their 'celebrity-ness'. So they say outrageous stuff because they know it gets them face time in our dumbed down media. How do you think it ended up here on Videosift?
Whether they actually believe their own shit... who knows?

Doug Stanhope - The Oklahoma Atheist

brycewi19 says...

As I stated in my earlier statement, SETTING RELIGION ASIDE, Doug Stanhope acted like an asshole. He shows a lack of human-ness here. And I'm not saying that others aren't being selfish. I'm saying that when you isolate Stanhope's personality, you see an asshole standing there.

The thing is, I don't think he'd even disagree with that.

Midnight Juggernauts' "Systematic"

Girls Are Assholes

Well, I could see your point if there was any sort of allusion in the video to how women are portrayed in the media/culture. But there isn't any that I can notice. And on top of that the title implies all women are like this--it doesn't matter what the creators believe in real life, it's the title they chose for the video.

I suppose this video struck a nerve with me because back in my single days I used to do a lot of clubbing (2-3 times a week most weeks) and I always went with a group of friends, mostly female. While some of those female friends were single, they just wanted to go and have a few drinks and dance--they weren't looking to make a "love connection."

Of course, guys don't know that and so of course they're going to make an approach, but some of them (admittedly usually fueled by too much alcohol) just wouldn't take a hint. Like the supposedly "nice" guy in this video, even after being politely told that the woman has no interest in them would come back and try again. And yeah, my female friends would find that shit creepy! Because, in general, the guys approaching them are physically bigger and stronger than them and the ones that don't take the hint (again fueled by the alcohol) tend to stand way too close. In a dark club, it can be very intimidating, especially if the female in question gets separated from her friends (ie she's coming back from the dance floor or the restroom) and has a guy who isn't taking a hint pressing up on her.

So basically, based on my personal experience, I don't find the premise of the video funny. I don't empathize with the "nice" guy because the awkward pickup line and inability to take a hint remind me of the guys my friends used to have to put up with. And also because I find the whole "he's a stalker but it's okay because he's cute" thing so incredibly implausible and demeaning to women, as its implied all women are like this. I suppose if the title were "Asshole Girls" I'd find this video somewhat more funny because the character in question basically then becomes a victim of her own assholish-ness (and not "women's assholish-ness" as a whole) by willingly throwing herself into the arms of her stalker.

US Celebrities in Weird Japanese Commercials Compilation

Nice to see that Japan is constantly raising the bar on WTF-ness. Even if I could understand spoken or written Japanese, I'm positive that none of those commercials would make any sense whatsoever.

Educational is educational, not dumbass-ed-ness; and some of these are definitely self-inflicted. Or at best a desire to have proven oneself...

I don't think people realize it but the sad music actually is the only reason we don't call this snuff. Put a heavy metal soundtrack and, same content, it's snuff.

Shepppard said:

Tricky if this is snuff. It's definitely people getting killed, yes, but every piece of it is historical in some way, and therefore somewhat educational. I'm actually leaning more towards the not snuff aspect for this one.

Bad Acting From The Last Airbender by M. Night Shyamalan

Shepppard says...

The story: Shamalan wrote the screenplay after his kids liked the cartoon. However, he decided to make a helluva lot of cuts to the movie to make it more cinematic. He completely neglected a TON of things that made the original great, especially the comedy.

The also tried to change race/element rolls, so instead of traditional Chinese, the firebenders were Indian, which also pissed a lot of people off, because one thing he could have done RIGHT was cast Dante Basco (Rufio, from hook, and the original voice actor of prince zuko) as his respective character.

The names were also mucked up, (Ahh-ng instead of Aang, Soakah instead of Sock-ah) and the overall tone of the movie was god, freaking awful.

It was a double whammy, he made the storyline of a kids cartoon even dumber than it already was (sorry people who love the show, but it is a kids show, they're not meant to make total sense.) and in doing so alienated any parents that went to see the movie with their kids.

And because he changed the storyline so much, he caused fans of the show to hate the movie because of its.. well, bad-ness.

Overall, I end with a quote.

Man of Steel - "Fate of Your Planet" Official Trailer

braschlosan says...

Traditionally there are separate channels (left right center etc) and if you want to make a sound come from above and slightly left an audio engineer would put a little in the left, a little in the center and maybe a small amount in reverse phase in the rear speaker. This worked but theaters have different sizes and layouts so it was never perfect.

Atmos takes a totally different approach. it can have 30-200 channels (iirc). Each speaker is on its own monitored channel and it is specifically tuned for that room. The ATMOS processor decides the exact amount of sound to each speaker on the fly from the "3d soundtrack." When making the movie the sound field is represented as a half sphere and the audio engineer places sounds around this.

What it means is that the theater shape/size/number of speakers and other factors add/subtract nothing from the experience. Not only that but each speaker is monitored for health so it can compensate and alert staff.

The important part is that with so many speakers being able to be addressed independently sounds can transition around the room completely smooth. If you had your eyes closed a helicopter circling your head and landing will transition around naturally.

There aren't many theaters that have it yet since they have to tear up the ceiling to add so many speakers (its usually every other ceiling tile front to back in two columns!). In the San Francisco Bay Area there are only three specific theater room that have it - One on the top floor of AMC Van Ness SF, One at the AMC Metreon SF and one at the Century theater in Fremont.

SevenFingers said:

I's assuming Atmos is some sort of atmospheric surround sound for a theater? I hope the Alamo Drafthouse of Kansas City has that, because that's the only theater worth going to.
