Cenk Gets Smacked Down On National TV.

joedirt says...

What the fuck is wrong with the submitter?

How the hell was this a smack down?

This douchebag only argument was "trust me" and "Israel is our ally". No one since 1967 has ever thought that Jerusalem was not divided into peacfully controlled other interests. Including a Christian section.

Israel was the last nation state to attack and sink a naval ship. In fact, it was the most expensive ship ever built.

Nice stuff there
I come from a long naval tradition, so that read is a throw back to some of my Pa's stories. He would get on someone when they complained about being "stressed out" or something. He would bust out with you don't know what stress is till you are landing in dead of night, on a small white dot in the ocean, in hostile air space, with no fuel, an engine out and in the middle of a hurricane. Ya, being a civilian is nice

So you're dad's a jerk who has to denigrate everyone in the world who hasn't experienced the same thing that he has?

Oh, well, I'm sure he's in good company.

Army cadets take trash-talking to new heights

blankfist says...

Haha. That's awesome. By the way, those are all officer candidates. The enlisted never have the luxury of doing what those ding dongs do.

You think this is wasteful? Ha! Go out with a Naval ship and see how much they waste. I remember being ordered to jettison nearly countless 5 gallon buckets of old "haze gray" paint buckets into the sea.

Also we dumped plastic garbage bags filled with nasty trash into the ocean - and we were told to look out for green peace! Not kidding. I learned pretty early on that in order to be a part of the military, you had to take a big shit on mother earth.

Is ObamaCare Constitutional?

@blankfist:

I'm impressed with your level of dialogue on this post. You show a better understanding of how markets can behave irrationally when small costs are forcedly imposed on a large number of people by a small number of actors, whether government or not. I sympathize more with your views realizing that your distrust of government stems from a distrust of concentrated capital in general, with government being the most extreme example. Honestly, you sound more like an anarcho-cynic than a libertarian in this conversation. Frankly, I have more respect for that. Where we differ is that I've come to see government instead as my only recourse against all those other forms of concentrated capital. This comes from my belief that democracy is the natural structural conjugate to capitalism. The two balance each other.

@Psychologic

What I really liked about your post is the emphasis on technological context. What struck me about the video is how almost all of the enumerated powers surrounded particular technologies, such as post, naval warfare, etc. Don't you suppose if planes had been invented there would be some mention of an air force? Laws always have to be revised to reflect the current technological context. Innovation confers powers to individuals not previously considered by lawmakers. Since just laws almost always heir on the side of liberty, there will thus be no statute in place to provide the necessary regulations a majority agree on. Thus, we update the law. That's why these constitutionality arguments always fall apart.

Also, I'm a computational neuroscientist, with a strong background in artificial intelligence. So your conversation about robots is rather close to my heart. I do think the ramifications of this technology have not really hit home yet. It's a large part of the reason I keep taking pay cuts to work for the government on issues clinically relevant to human vision, rather than work for the private sector on issues relevant to replacing employees and guiding missiles. Not trying to take a stand on it, just not my thing.

47 knots on a Hydrofoil Trimaran

Go-fast boats are not small hydroplaning vessels. They have a standard V-hull design which using displacement to keep itself afloat. They simply use enormous amounts of power to muscle their way through the water; they have no specific design feature to reduce drag.
Compare:

This will only work on nearly flat surfaces as well, not suitable for open ocean drug smuggling.

1. All those "go fast boats" are tiny in comparison to vessels used in naval combat.
2. They have a smaller displacement when moving quickly than when stationary -- i.e. they're hybrids, receiving a significant part of their lift from hydroplaning.

"That's somewhat faster than any naval fleets can travel. The only vessels that can go 45+ knots are small hydroplaning vessels. The titanic went a measly 23 knots."

...only true for wind-powered craft. Go-fast/cigarette boats go much faster, up to 80kts, for example.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Well, again waste in the form of military. Everything stems back to that, don't it? Cut the spending on the military and the spills will be lowered.

In the Navy, we used to dump five gallon paint cans (filled with paint sometimes) into the ocean and told to watch out for Grean Peace. In fact, every naval ship throws (or used to throw) their garbage overboard. When we were done doing all that, we also pissed into the water to let Mother Nature know who was boss.
We also took huge recycling cargo bins filled with tons and tons of plastic meant for recycling, and we dumped it in the sea instead. Before we did that, however, we sifted through all the recyclable garbage and pulled all the plastic six pack rings and artfully tied bread crumbs to them before tossing them to the seagulls.
We also raped children and puppies. No, but some of this is true.

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread (Happy Talk Post)

maatc says...

Finally found the time to write something here, sorry for keeping you waiting kids. Great thread!

My name is Matthias, I am originally from Hamburg, Germany and live in Berlin.

My username is a mix of the german nickname "Matze" for Matthias, and a bit of "Maat", which means "Petty Officer" in german, and comes from my colleagues and I calling each other by naval ranks for fun from time to time.

I picked up most of my english during an exchange year I spent near Portland/Oregon in 1992. I also spent most of 2004/05 travelling around Australia with my back then girlfriend, now wife. We had a baby boy in May 2008 and while it is very exhausting we love every minute of it.

I don´t have a degree in anything, and the only time I ever saw a university from the inside was when I visited my friends for lunch. Over the years I have done things like directing a live news program on national television, selling life insurance over the phone, changing old peoples diapers in a care home, and performing for kids on stages around Europe in a dinosaur suit.

Right now I am with ASDTV, a company that was founded in 2008 to help a large german publishing house by strengthening their video branch both online and on air.
At the moment I am spending my days with digitalizing incoming footage, editing rough cuts and organizing the playouts via satellite or other feeds to various broadcasters around germany.

I own a set of decks, and buy the occasional electronic or house vinyl, but I suck at mixing. Macs are my friends.

I enjoy travelling, music, art, good design, clever ads and creative things.

And the Sift!

Glad to hear that you're doing good! Hopefully the recession doesn't last for too long.

I'm actually in the Canadaian Naval Reserve so most of my income comes from that and teaching piano lessons. Most of my friends who gig for money are still getting work up here so it must mean that people still want to go out and have a good time. Although, the recession might be a bit different up here in Canada. It seems like there's a lot of hope and change in the US right now so that can't be bad. Are you happy with your new Pres? His speech was pretty powerful.

That's all I have to say about that.
Other than that, pretty good. Health is good, attitude staying on the sunny side of the fence... Money is starting to dry up around here, though...slowly...but surely. Seems like more people I talk to lately are really starting to feel it too. Have you been seeing any trickle-down effect from this 'crisis' as a musician?

In reply to this comment by Fusionaut:
Wow! Thank you so much Laura! How are you doing anyway?
