Ivegotthebends says...Dotdude, I think at the time of this episode Mr. Burns first name had never been mentioned in an episode. So, the joke is not only that Homer didn't know his name, but it was also an inside joke with the audience because we didn't know his name either.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
