Cars nostalgia (Wheels Talk Post)

gorgonheap says...

My first car was a 1993 Mitsubishi Galant S. Great car got amazing gas mileage. Went as far as I could with it but eventually at 287,000 miles the repairs it needed to keep it going outweighed the cost of a new car.

The second car I still own. a 1998 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. It's run like a beauty since the day I got it. The all wheel drive saved myself from accidents several times. Doesn't get as good mileage as my first car but the low maintaince cost and safety make up for it.

Third car we are currently trying to sell is a 1997 Ford Escort ES. Amazing thing about this car is it's 'new car' smell hasn't faded, it's in great shape, low miles, but hard to keep up with the repairs and doesn't handle ice very well. After our son was born we haven't used it so it's just an extra insurance liability we don't need.

^ No, Blu-ray was created by a consortium. From the FAQ:

Who developed Blu-ray?

The Blu-ray Disc format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers, with more than 180 member companies from all over the world. The Board of Directors currently consists of:

Apple Computer, Inc.
Dell Inc.
Hewlett Packard Company
Hitachi, Ltd.
LG Electronics Inc.
Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
Sharp Corporation
Sony Corporation
Sun Microsystems, Inc.
TDK Corporation
Thomson Multimedia
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney Pictures
Warner Bros. Entertainment

When will I be able to buy Blu-ray products?

If you live in the US or Canada you can already find Blu-ray players from Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, Philips and Pioneer available in stores, as well as a growing selection of Blu-ray movies. We also expect to see Blu-ray players from LG and Sharp, as well as a second-generation Blu-ray player from Samsung introduced in the near future. The first Blu-ray hardware and software should also be available in many European countries now.

Amazing NASA satellite video of Artic Ice Melt

Info about the satellite from my previous post's link; http://www.ghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/AMSR/

"In support of the Earth Science Enterprise's goals, NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua Satellite was launched from Vandenberg AFB, California on May 4, 2002 at 02:54:58 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time. The primary goal of Aqua, as the name implies, is to gather information about water in the Earth's system. Equipped with six state-of-the-art instruments, Aqua will collect data on global precipitation, evaporation, and the cycling of water. This information will help scientists all over the world to better understand the Earth's water cycle and determine if the water cycle is accelerating as a result of climate change.

The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - EOS (AMSR-E) is a one of the six sensors aboard Aqua. AMSR-E is passive microwave radiometer, modified from the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite-II (ADEOS-II) AMSR, designed and provided by JAXA (contractor: Mitsubishi Electric Corporation). It observes atmospheric, land, oceanic, and cryospheric parameters, including precipitation, sea surface temperatures, ice concentrations, snow water equivalent, surface wetness, wind speed, atmospheric cloud water, and water vapor."
