The American Dream

Obama and McCain Both in Bed with Big Oil

NetRunner says...

A few things:

1. The lady "breaking" this story is a senior adviser to the McCain campaign.

2. The statistic she first mentions is cherrypicked: looking only at donations from Exxon Mobil executives, it's Obama $42,100 to McCain's $35,166.

3. They then say Obama got $384,000 from oil executives, total. McCain has received over $2 million. Mika says $1 mil off the top of her head, but that's just for the month of June, specifically after he started the offshore drilling rant. July's numbers aren't out yet, but I suspect there will be more to come.

4. Who's arguing for policies beneficial to oil companies? McCain with gas tax holidays and offshore drilling, or Obama who's against both of those, and for a windfall profits tax, and reducing or eliminating oil subsidies?

Despite the above, I'll agree it's rather sucky how corporations manage to find a way to get big money to both candidates, just to make sure there's some level of debt owed.

Though taking a McCain campaign adviser's word for what the situation is with donations is ridiculous.

Mika is awesome. Every single time he comes on the radio, cant help but think...man, this guy is like the new Freddie Mercury.

Further basis on which to compare Mika to Freddie Mercury, as this might be seen as his answer to Queen's "Fat-Bottomed Girls."

Penn Jillette on Morning Joe: "White Bitch Month" reactions

not difficult.
or, to feed him back his own silliness slope, at the 3 minute mark...

"are you pretending that it's difficult? or is it actually difficult?
'cuz if it's actually difficult, then you don't have the ability to have a conversation."

penn jillette is better at exposing bullshit, because he does a better job
of not using more bullshit in his opinions & counter-arguments.

yes, there's a common perception of hillary as an 'ice queen' or 'bitch'.
but it's not necessarily because she's assertive, or confident, or aggressive.
or <insert traditionally-more-masculine adjective here>.

it's because she seems to think the best way of beating "the republican smear machine",
is to create a better one for democrats.

we've seen her take one cheap shot after another, for months now.
playing off the animosity of the last 8 years. instead of mending it.

does anyone else here remember the shot she took at obama, very early in the debates, when he spoke of how he might respond to iranian aggression?
i sure do, because it's the first thing i thought of, while she spoke of her own iranian scenario. when i was recently translating choggish...

yeah, i think mika's being duplicitous, or at the very least she's just playing devil's advocate. either to fend off angry letters defending hillary, or to drum up some drama. not the first time i've seen her play it up a little.
but i still think joe's got one of the better political shows. at least they actually have penn on, and give him ample opportunity to explain his point of view.

interesting clip, fed. lots to chew on there.

Found a bug... I guess... give me a dollar (Sift Talk Post)

today I've already listened to Mika's Grace Kelly something like more than a dozen time. Can't stop, just can't stop.

But since I'm not reloading the page I guess it doesn't count.

Those two men are pathetic. They'll say whatever they're told to, just to keep selling those O'Reilly-esque personas of knowledgeable, reasonable men. Too bad Mika began standing up for her beliefs. Naturally, they had to do their best to shut her down before it looked like she has more of a grip on reality than they do.

@entropy

"there is a time and place for being a principled journalist"

I agree. That time and place is on a morning news show that blatantly tries to use a celebrity story of complete and utter meaningless drivel to distract viewers attention away from Iraq.

Respect to Mika!

Whether it was scripted or not is completely irrelevant, and is just more distraction from the point that was brilliantly made.

America is still doomed.

Mika Häkkinen hunting down Michael Schumacher

Enzoblue says...

Perfect thing would be to have a webcast of helmet cockpit cams like Champ car does, (or tries to), where you can simultaniously watch 4 incar cams at once. Very cool.

In this Mika did exploit the blue flag, but he was losing to Schumacher on the turns and only caught him on long straights because his car was a lot faster. Still a blast to watch.
