DED Talk: A TED Talk For Zombies

chingalera says...

Pop culture zombie apocalypse scenarios of the last 10 years in cinema and televisions' a metaphorical foreshadowing of what will happen in America after the first week of a national teamsters strike. No groceries for a couple weeks would make the Walking Dead look like some day care field trip. You too, Europa...

The zombies are already in place, you simply need to cut-off food supplies to activate them.

@artician- the really hard part while trying not to burn-out on humanity is suffering apathy and mindless subservience in a time when knowledge and information is on-tap and available to non-members of the "club." -Clear light IS a motherfucker and most people are too weak to process information and respond accordingly.

Same old, same old. The few will always control the many and destroy the weak.

The emperor wears no clothes not only that, he sucks cock by choice and is still breathing the same air as us.

Unless you eradicate the queen the ants leave a clean slate for the next infestation.

No more metaphor, anyone with an opinion on geopolitics, or religion seeking to argue premise within the confines of these faulty estates are masturbating in public at this chapter in earth history as the cunts will succeed. Best to get as far from the blast zone as possible screams the expat inside my head.

Obama 2012: "We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt."

aaronfr says...

Not defending him, but he isn't talking about the city. 'Detroit' is a metaphor American car manufacturers, and in this particular case, the restructuring of General Motors' debt through a taxpayer bailout in 2008/9.

Context matters.

Brave Texas woman speaks out against legislators

Ahhh, more Chingaleraese. It's so difficult to wade through the morass of disjointed thoughts you spout. I think that's your intention with your ramblings. That is typical of Texas rightwingers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqs9DYisSsg
Mixed metaphors and run on thoughts not withstanding, I left Texas because my family moved for business when I was 13, so I didn't 'run from' anything. I did quickly decide that moving back was not in my best interest, because I'm not an anti-abortion, anti-minority, anti-liberal, anti-union, anti-tax, anti-intellectual, anti-evolution, anti-science, anti-education, anti-nonchristian, right wing nutjob.
True, there is no utopia of freedom, but there are certainly far better examples than Texas. In Texas, you have complete freedom to do as they say, but not the freedom to publicly disagree. As someone who has lived in many states, I can say with authority that Texas is one of the most hard nosed, anti 'freedom' states I've lived in. They love to talk about loving freedom, but hate to give it to anyone that thinks even slightly differently from them...consistently. They're simply too stupid or dumb to realize that real freedom means the freedom to do the unpopular, and consistently outlaw the unpopular in the name of freedom and liberty. It's just sad.

Richard Dawkins Interviews Deepak Chopra (Enemies of Reason)

Babymech says...

It's not a rational discussion just because two people are putting words in order. Chopra is just babbling, and Dawkins is letting him because every badly used 'metaphor' is another inch of rope Chopra is hanging himself with.

Edit: IS HE FUCKING KIDDING US? The "Quantum physics aficionados" have "hijacked" his concept of quantum healing!? Deepak Chutzpah...

^ All well and good, but it's important not to define and judge people by our momentary interactions with them. I don't think he's saying "THE RAT RACE IS AMAZING AND YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ABIDE BY IT" but rather, when you're in a shitty moment, don't go with your default irrational bitch and moan.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Now you can define yourself and redefine yourself to better eliminate the negative qualities of the status quo, but the fact is, you're going to (metaphorically or not) stand in a line and it's up to you to define that experience.

I'm judged by my extreme nature every day. I sometimes get in peoples faces and challenge them with momentary awareness that they are an interactive object in my environment. It freaks em out, sometimes it makes em smile. Either case, I'm a weird fuckin' dude. The train of perception goes both ways.

Wildflower, don't judge the potted roses just because they judge you. Just challenge them. Add an interactive element. Peaceful, please. hahahahaha

This whole video feels like a passive aggressive “it’s okay to conform to your shitty reality” message. Very well done production, sure, but something I fundamentally disagree with. Our modern lives aren’t solely issues of acceptance and perspective. They are an issue of acting, forming and changing our shared reality to the betterment of our shared, personal existence. The guy who wrote this clearly had good intentions, but conveys a fundamental roll-over, accept-things-as-the-are message.

We can change our reality, and this makes no suggestion of that. Sure, most young peoples “default” is to grow frustrated with the tedium they find in day-to-day existence, but the answer isn’t entirely one of personal judgment. We can change all of this in many, many ways.

It’s healthy to consider that everyone around you feels the same way. No one is the center of the world. Everyone in it is just as important as you, but no more, and no less. You should fight for everyone around you just as hard as you fight for yourself.

This video was irritating and manipulative on several different levels.
Don’t buy into this.
Be a good human.
Change your environment for the passive-betterment of everyone.
If you hit a wall, find another way.

And if I have any personal grudge to add it’s this: certainly don’t be the waste of space who accepts the status quo, and then ostracizes those who reject it just because you too weak to do so.

You're not a scientist!

bmacs27 says...

Excuse me, what? This isn't us being fanatic. This is more simple dismissiveness. You haven't convincingly demonstrated significant wasteful spending. Your arguments are all hypothetical or anecdotal. Give me data to sink my teeth into and I might bother to show you fanatical.

Of course there are other priorities, but maybe basic science and medical research don't even register in the budget. You're the one defending defense research, remember? I would send citizens buried by medical expenses (like myself) knocking on your door. I wouldn't suggest they consider cuts to research that experts in biological sciences have agreed show promise. I hate to think how many advancements we aren't funding as it is.

Where I will fault science is in their incapacity to efficiently communicate. Our job description amounts to summarizing the unintuitive. For my money, this communication gulf accounts for most of the perceived waste in science. When you're inside you see how all the ant work science (both metaphorical and literal) contributes. Most of the great discoveries end up looking more like great summaries. Every field has someone come along once a decade or two, but it's hard to know who. Then the universe is easier to understand; and everybody wins.

Here's an example. Studying gill-withdrawal responses in sea slugs provided the foundation for what we now know about neuronal learning and memory. This was circa 1952. Reasoning similar to yours would have prohibited that expense. That would have been dumb. I agree if your point is simply that we should do a better job of convincing you of that.

dirkdeagler7 said:

I was attempting to say that people should not be fanatic on either side of this argument, as not all scientific research is the most efficient topic or use of resources and not all research deemed "insignificant" is actually insignificant.

The fact that people reacted so strongly to ANY criticism of current research or justifications for it shows just how fanatic some people are about the need to defend any and all research.

It's the nature of a scientist or science minded people to find value and merit in almost any scientific pursuit. But in a world of limited resources and with many other problems, we have to accept that there is an opportunity cost to any and all research, no matter how important.

For some the valuation of this opportunity cost will differ.

Explain to someone who has no insurance or has a problem with medical bills or has no job or has family members fighting abroad or is getting foreclosed on....that we need to spend money to better understand hermaphroditic snails and the intricacies of their mating rituals in order to better understand evolution and reproduction to maybe one day apply that technology to genetic research or fertility programs.

Then watch them give you the look of "thats great but why do I care about that now?" and understand that they are part of the greater good too.

"Posting Guidelines ¶

So you have a sweet video you'd like to post. That's great. We appreciate all of the additions that help keep VideoSift alive and kicking, but sometimes videos are posted that really shouldn't be on VideoSift. We don't like to delete your videos and *ban you. Honestly, it makes us sad. With that in mind, we've put together a few guidelines to which you must adhere whenever posting a video. Please read these before you make your first post!

Please do not self link.

While you may see this site as a great way to promote a project you are working on or promoting, it would be bad for our content if everyone just put up videos of them and their friends doing random things. If you are associated with a project you think is truly amazing and must be shared, please contact us. We'll take a look at it and if we also think it's great too, we'll post it for you. If you attempt to post it yourself, your video and account will be deleted. Hey, it's harsh, but it's harsh love.

What exactly consitutes a self link?

If your post is not a Sponsored Video (the only allowed way to promote your own content) and any of the following is true about a particular video you are considering submitting, it is a self link, with NO exceptions for any member:

The video is associated with your account on the video host (i.e., you uploaded it to YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).
You played any role, no matter how large or small, in any aspect of the production of the video.
You are in any way responsible for or involved in marketing, promoting, or any other manner of proliferating the video.
You could receive any form of compensation (monetary or otherwise) as a result of the submission or subsequent views.
You are somehow represented in the content of the video (whether photographically, artistically, audibly, or metaphorically) without the approval of a site administrator.

If you self link, regardless of your logic or explanation, you are violating the posting guidelines. There are no exceptions for any reason, whatsoever.

Finally, submitting a video that is considered spam falls within our definition of a self-link. If you create an account solely to post a video for whatever reason, but do not actually participate in VideoSift in any other way before or after, you may be considered a spammer/self-promoter and your account is subject to banning.

Exempt from our self-link definition is an embed that is supplied to another member's post when fixing a Dead Pool video or adding a *backup embed (see star powers). Bear in mind that this exemption does not apply to your own posts." -- The SIft
