London Stock Exchange To Buy Toronto

Deutsche Boerse to take over New York Stock Exchange?

notarobot says...

You're right, a merger is not a takeover. The Deutsche stock exchange buying a controlling share in the NYSE is a takeover.

"Deutsche Boerse AG is in advanced talks to buy NYSE Euronext in an all-stock transaction that would create the world’s biggest exchange operator. (...) Deutsche Boerse will own about 59 percent to 60 percent of the joined entity." /source.

Milton Friedman - Socialism is Force

bluecliff says...

Capitalism and socialism are two faces of the same coin. As we move further and further into the 21st century this is becoming more and more obvious. A government without tradition and a cultural framework is nothing more than a corporation. As both tradition and culture become eroded (they are almost non-existent by now) we will see the complete and utter merger of these two systems.

Revoke BP's Corporate Charter

dystopianfuturetoday says...

You never answered my question. You've given me doctrinal bull, a list of fallacies, medieval times among other monkey dances, but you've yet to explicitly spell out a believable scenario in which the free market brings down a merchant monarch. This is now the 6th time I've asked and I've also given you two examples.

Can you do it or not? Can you give me a plausible scenario that I can't easily take apart in seconds.

You are asking people to accept a fairly radical, untested, political doctrine. If you want to change minds, you need to earn it, and to me, you could earn this by giving me a scenario in which freemarketology brings down a corporate dictator.

I'll set the stage: Ron Paul is elected as world dictator tomorrow, a minarchy is put into place, corporate welfare comes to an end, but so does labor protections, environmental protections, regulation and oversight. Hundreds of super-powerful corporations start making plays in the newly created power vacuum. The bigger ones eat the smaller ones, there are mergers, corporate mercinary armies are built up. The skies grow dark and it seems that all is lost until........

Win my heart and mind.

Oh I understand, it's called being caught by the short and curlies...the UK has been systemayically fist-fucked by the same group of assholes that has been fucking the US
since the fed took over policy at the beginning of the last century-and no doubt the US will not begin to see light until our proposed merger, it's the only out unless there is a collective awakening. Obama is a yes man for wall street, a brilliant actor who is probably scared -shit-less to speak against his keepers......he's a good house nigger for the bossman........I can't return responses privately...the only function I can't use post-ban.....sorrry bout that

In reply to this comment by rasch187:
The European Economic Community (European Union now) is the best thing that ever happened to the UK. Without it, they would be fucked economicly. Another approach would have been to join EFTA, but that would have been suicide for a powerful nation in the European area, as they would have to accept all the legislation made by the EU and the European Commission deciding how much they would have to pay to stay a member (which would have been unproportional if based on what Norway, as a member of EFTA pays).

Yeah, what the government did wasn't very democratic, but trust me, the UK citizens and businesses have prospered greatly by being a part of the EU.

In reply to this comment by choggie:

Endless mind-numbing editorials on issues which be merely symptoms of the beast, the emperor with no clothes or skin, for that matter.....The United States will fall in lock-step not unlike the UK did when she was welcomed into the EU against the will of the people, and by mandate of her cunt royal family, god-damned empire-building elitist scumbag fucks that they are. Kill them all, scatter their children's ashes on the dung heap of history.

Formerly known as Condor, and now, formerly known as Blizzard North. They have since been consolidated into Blizzard Entertainment.
Most of the people who brought you the first two Diablo games are long gone.
Alas, the world of game design is ruthless, and very Capitalistic. You want to see Capitalism at work? Dip your head into the game industry.

I don't know the details of what happened during the Blizzard North exodus, but it seems like lots of people quit because they wanted to go off and create their own companies where they'd be in charge. So not really an example of people being screwed by a ruthless system, since they left freely to pursue larger ambitions. And with most of the company (30 people) having quit, Blizzard North could not have continued on it's own, it seems the merger with the rest of Blizzard Entertainment was necessary.

I still have a lot of hope for the game though. Even if it's not the original team, it seems they have some very talented people working on it.

If the automakers collapse

Farhad2000 says...

Actually its the reverse, the Democrats are pushing for an auto industry bail out, and the republicans are resisting claiming rightly that the government is not responsible for the failures of the auto makers.

The auto makers did not learn their lesson as Dag said correctly, the 1970s crunch saw the auto industry push for high protectionism along the age of the gas guzzlers to continue for several years. It has time and time again failed to be a technological and innovation leader in the free market.

The companies should not be rewarded for being shit at what they are supposed to do, you can't simply bailout companies all the damn time, this is why nationalized airlines fail consistently.

However its a difficult decision, the auto makers do employ alot of people, but I believe a solution lies within the market to alleviate the crisis, either by merger or buyout by other companies.

I think the government should be in the business of allowing successful companies (Toyota, Honda, which also produce in the US now) flourish not be tied down to fulfill the needs of failures (the big 3).

What happened before Code Pink was Hit? Here it is.

imstellar28 says...

One might take a look at our Capitol for any evidence of a police state. We see: barricades, metal detectors, police, military soldiers at times, dogs, ID badges required for every move, vehicles checked at airports and throughout the Capitol. The people are totally disarmed, except for the police and the criminals. But worse yet, surveillance cameras in Washington are everywhere to ensure our safety

Almost all of our economic activities depend upon receiving the proper permits from the federal government. Transactions involving guns, food, medicine, smoking, drinking, hiring, firing, wages, politically correct speech, land use, fishing, hunting, buying a house, business mergers and acquisitions, selling stocks and bonds, and farming all require approval and strict regulation from our federal government. If this is not done properly and in a timely fashion, economic penalties and even imprisonment are likely consequences.

Because government pays for much of our health care, it's conveniently argued that any habits or risk-taking that could harm one's health are the prerogative of the federal government, and are to be regulated by explicit rules to keep medical-care costs down. This same argument is used to require helmets for riding motorcycles and bikes.

Not only do we need a license to drive, but we also need special belts, bags, buzzers, seats and environmentally dictated speed limits- or a policemen will be pulling us over to levy a fine, and he will be toting a gun for sure.

All 18-year-old males must register to be ready for the next undeclared war. If they don't, men with guns will appear and enforce this congressional mandate. "Involuntary servitude" was banned by the 13th Amendment, but courts don't apply this prohibition to the servitude of draftees or those citizens required to follow the dictates of the IRS- especially the employers of the country, who serve as the federal government's chief tax collectors and information gatherers. Fear is the tool used to intimidate most Americans to comply to the tax code by making examples of celebrities. Leona Helmsley and Willie Nelson know how this process works.

All our financial activities are subject to "legal" searches without warrants and without probable cause. Tax collection, drug usage, and possible terrorist activities "justify" the endless accumulation of information on all Americans.

Government control of medicine has prompted the establishment of the National Medical Data Bank. For efficiency reasons, it is said, the government keeps our medical records for our benefit. This, of course, is done with vague and useless promises that this information will always remain confidential- just like all the FBI information in the past!

Personal privacy, the sine qua non of liberty, no longer exists in the United States. Ruthless and abusive use of all this information accumulated by the government is yet to come. The Patriot Act has given unbelievable power to listen, read, and monitor all our transactions without a search warrant being issued after affirmation of probably cause. "Sneak and peak" and blanket searches are now becoming more frequent every day. What have we allowed to happen to the 4th amendment?
