The Marvel Symphonic Universe

nock says...

An original score and AC/DC aren't the same thing...IMO, John Williams is the most consistent and memorable cinematic composer alive today. Scores for ET, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Goonies, Indiana Jones are all evocative.

I'm reminded of that Hans Zimmer BA-DA-DA-DUM-DUM-DU-NUH, BA-DA-DA-DUM-DU-nuh. I first recall from "The Rock" though it probably appeared earlier and was then used in variations in every 90's action movie. Sometimes exactly, probably the same composer, and sometimes just ripped off variations. There was also the theme from 48 Hours that was used in many 80's action films.

Of course, they were memorable in their way. It didn't take long before you didn't really notice the music anymore, though, because it was just "action movie" music for the time.

RetroAhoy: Quake

spawnflagger says...

Before the match, one of the moderators said he was going to record a demo (quake engine built-in recorder), but he never followed up when I asked him how to get a copy.

The final points were memorable - I just got the pentagram of protection, then went underwater chasing after 2 guys, and discharged the lightning gun (doesn't suicide with that power-up).

Are there recordings and photo(graph)s of you winning?

Blue Man Group - The Forge

MilkmanDan says...

Actually, I think the 2014 show was entirely new stuff compared to the one that I saw first. It is hard for me to call which time was better -- I saw them first (with the twinkie bit) when I was like 17 or so, and then again in my 30's.

I was really entertained by the twinkie bit -- memorable enough that that was probably my overall favorite non-musical bit of either performance I saw. But overall I think the later show might have been even better. And like I said, I don't remember any rehashed material between the two, but the time span between them makes me not 100% sure about that.

The teleprompter text warmup stuff -- sarcasm and jokey stuff -- was really good in both shows also. With regards to songs, Rods and Cones is probably my single favorite of theirs. The giant drum that is below human hearing range but physically compresses your chest was featured in that early show, from the "Audio" album era. That wasn't used in the newer show, and it added something to the live show even though you can't actually "hear" it so much as "feel" it. But obviously home stereos can't reproduce that, and there are a lot of good songs from the newer albums / shows also.

Yep, they still do that sk(it/etch) today AFAIK. Was the updated version better to you than the original version? For some reason, I still like the original designs more. {snip}

Star Wars The New Awakening Is A Tribute To A New Hope

MilkmanDan says...

There are a LOT of similarities. It definitely blurs the line between "reboot" and "homage", but I'd argue that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I think it will take a few years for me to digest and figure out where I think it ranks in my personal assessment of the Star Wars movies.

That being said, I'm excited about the future of Star Wars again -- the prequels came very close to destroying any optimism that I had in that regard.

For the moment, consider Episode VII but ignore the plot and parallels / homage / blatant copying between it and A New Hope. In all three prequels combined, there wasn't a single character that was interesting; that we could identify with. Anakin was annoying -- in kid form and adult form. Ewan McGregor did OK with the material and directing he was given, but the script and writing in general did NOTHING to connect prequels Obi-Wan with the original trilogy. Padme, Jar-Jar (ha!), Palpatine, Dooku, etc. -- not a single memorable, interesting character that made me want to learn more about them. Sam Jackson's Mace Windu was probably the closest, but didn't get enough screen time or depth to really establish interest.

Already I feel confident in saying that in terms of characters, Episode VII is massively, overwhelmingly better than the prequels. Rey, Finn, and Poe are each individually far more interesting than every character from the prequels combined. AND, I want to see how those new faces interact with the old stars also. Luke, Leia, even Chewbacca (my personal favorite of the OT) all seem like they will continue to be very important to the story moving forward -- and continue to develop their own story arcs in addition to the new cast.

The Force Awakens wasn't *perfect* -- I tend to think it leaned a bit too much on revamping A New Hope also -- but it was very good and very entertaining. And I am definitely excited about the future of Star Wars again.

Wow ... the weirdest thing just happened. As I was clicking on the Sift Talk Forum to see who's celebrating a birthday, YOUR screen name popped into my mind. A heartbeat later it was revealed that you indeed are basking in the limelight of the day! A good omen for fabulous enchantment perhaps? Here's wishing you a memorable time

Honest Kids Say The Darndest Things

bareboards2 says...

This man in my avatar. That's my poppa. He repeated the story for DECADES about a particular truth-telling little girl.

Art Linkletter had a show called "Kids Say the Darnedest Things." Methinks Eric3579 remembers this show. There was a segment where Art would ask kids questions, just to see what they would say.

He asked this one memorable girl -- the red light on a stoplight means stop, the green means go. What does the yellow light mean?

She leaned forward into the mike and said "Step on the gas."

My dad would tell that story and chuckle and chuckle and chuckle.

Who Owns Oregon? Some Historical Context

RFlagg says...

He noted it in the description and an annotation... apparently annotations like that don't show up on embeds, probably due to some vids being spammed with them.

He even joked about it on his Twitter...
If I could learn the difference between east and west and memorize my state capitals, I might become a halfway decent vlogger some day.

Stupid People+Simple Questions=Face:Palm

Syntaxed says...

E. Y. E. S. = EEEEEEEEYEEEEEESSSSS = Stupid

Oceans are meaningless then aren't they?

The fact is, these people are obviously dumb. Five oceans, seven continents, One planet, a few major cities, isn't that much to remember(those aren't included in this video, but they are simple as all bloody hell). As for flags, don't see a reason to memorize many of those myself. Currencies, maybe if you travel often. But oceans? My God.

worthwords said:

i think the objection is the implication that not knowing something equates to stupidity. You could pick any subject that is seemly simple or fundamental - such as the flags of the world, currencies - all that crap I was forced to memorise at school rather than understanding WHY we have different currencies etc.

Your strawman of london in britain is not a useful example and I hope I don't have to explain why.

>>all information is useless trivia
where on earth did that come from? I'm just saying that the ocean is one big body of water and memorising the different demarcations them is not actually very useful to most people. If you know it then good on you but if you don't - you are not by definition stupid.

For the record. I was taught Antarctic Ocean not southern so i would have failed according this silly man
