Curiosity Rover TOUCHDOWN!!

notarobot says...

"500 metres in altitude,"
"How close is that?"
...
IT'S FIVE HUNDRED METRES FROM THE MARTIAN SURFACE! You know, HALF A KILOMETER?
The approximate height of the CN tower? A wee bit higher than the EMPIRE FUCKING STATE BUILDING?
How close? NotcloseenoughthatyouwontdiefromfreefalldespitelowgravityonMars!
Metric! For Pete's sake!
Sheesh!

NASA Lands Car-Size Rover Beside Martian Mountain

deathcow says...

I know the rover has the equipment to perform intercision, but they are still not sure if they can find any little Martian kids. >> ^hpqp:

I've just read the most excellent His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, so every time they say "Dust" it takes on a whole different meaning in my mind.

Soon, rockets will land on their thrusters

Soon, rockets will land on their thrusters

valorumguygee says...

This would be the final stage in the landing procedure for the rocket. Slowing it down to this speed to be able to make such a landing would be handled by other stages of the entire system. It wont be traveling at entry speeds when its that close to the ground of course... This system would kick in when its ready.

>> ^PHJF:

Pretty sure a vehicle entering martian atmosphere has a longer drop and higher velocity than that.

Jack Nicholson speech - Mars Attacks

What's good about it, you ask? The music. The opening credits. The burning cows and other various sight gags. The design and rendering of the martians. The gleeful gore. The zany goings-on.

Such is what I noticed this time around, a lot I never noticed the previous viewing. They just make fun of a lot of situations, how agencies handle things etc.

Stunning Real footage from the solar system.

Superhero Primary: Republican Presidential Candidates Reveal

Stephen Colbert Occupies Wall Street

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Probably not the best people to pick to represent the movement - but that's also probably why Colbert picked them. It is hard with these kinds of PC lefties to know when they are being serious or not. Any normal, sane person would take only two minutes of conversation with these two OWS glitterati to come to the accurate conclusion that they were a complete waste of time.

But to the point - who else should have been picked to 'represent' OWS? I mean really. Of all the guys down there, who would have done a better job of exemplifying exactly what OWS 'is'? The only consistent message they have is "We hate Wall Street". OK. Most folks can agree that WS/Banks acted recklessly, and have been given way too much political payola. And the next step is...? Is...? To wave your fingers?

That's where OWS and normal, sane people part company. OWS has no sane, rational position beyond "we're mad at Wall Street excess". People agree with that. Everything else OWS says might as well be coming from martians.

Zero Punctuation: Rage

AeroMechanical says...

I thought it was great... mostly. Amazing graphics, and some of the fighting was awesome. I don't think it was too short, Steam says I played for 17 hours, but like Elron says, it seemed like it was building up to something awesome but then it just sort of ended, which gives the final impression of being short. Some of the earlier levels were pretty epic, and I figured they'd have something pretty cool for the end, but nope, it was probably the most mundane level of all. If they had just added one more hour of epicness in the authority city, it would have made all the difference in the world.

I'd actually say the game could be improved by a fairly simple mod: Remove the vehicles, and make it so you have to fight your way through hordes of mutants in the wasteland on foot to get to mission hubs, making it worthwhile by having them drop interesting loot. The vehicles were well done, but IMO, just unnecessary.

I understand there is a Doom remake in the works that uses this engine. That could be awesome. Screw story, characters, whatever, just give me some ridiculous weapons and set me loose on martian research facility overrun by zombies and demons, with just enough plot to keep it moving forward.
