Taking Liberties - trailer (loss of civil liberties in UK)

theneb says...

It has Mark Thomas in it, bound to have a good light side.
Such scenes as Mark wandering around outside a "Rebuilding Iraq" business meeting, where businesses collected together to pretty much buy contracts in iraq and Mark with a cake shaped in iraq asking delegates if they "Wanted a piece of iraq"

Weapons of US soldiers in Iraq 'plagued with problems'

i agree this had all the journalism of a wet paper bag, and that it was meant to be some kind of shocking "ZOMG OUR GUNS SUCK!!!" story.

it's obvious that the dude has a grudge, he is not being paid to make better guns so he goes on tv to diss the gun. I wonder what gun he would REALLY choose for his son. Probably an H&K not an AK but he didn't want to recommend a competitor.

about your last sentence, lavoll... lol... i believe that is partly WHY we keep doing these damn stupid wars, to test weapons. I saw one documentary (Mark Thomas i think) about weapons dealing which said people will only buy weapons that are "tested in battle" so the manufacturers therefore have an incentive to lobby for aggressive preemptive asymmetric war, not defensive peace.... and there's your militaryindustrialcomplex.

Most debates in the world can be reduced down to profit motive and money trail.

and yes i know it's not a gun it's a rifle.

Yes, Prime Minister - The Defence Policy

colinr says...

Isn't our defence policy run in deference to the Americans who have their nuclear missile silos and Knebworth Hill monitoring station based here, rather than anything to do with what is in the British publics interest? (is the Mark Thomas Comedy Product episode where he flies a hot air balloon over Knebworth Hill up on the sift yet?)

After School Arms Club (Quite Disturbing - 47mins)

deputydog says...

'In this disturbing programme presented by Mark Thomas, schoolchildren using simple letterheads, a mobile phone, an email address and a little money show how you can flout the rules and get tooled up to a dangerous degree.

After setting up two companies they arranged arms deals to destinations covered by British and other national trade embargoes - South African rifles to Israel, Pakistani grenade launchers to Syria and Turkish guns to Mali.

The film demonstrates that although governments say they're opposed to the arms trade, the controls they have in place don't do enough to prevent it.'

Mark Thomas (original Ali G): George Galloway on the toilet

benjee says...

Mark Thomas is a British political activist and comedian: he's the original Ali G, as he was the first - before Sacha Baron Cohen; who was obviously inspired by his work (and toned down his politics). I highly recommend any of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product series (or his one offs like Mark Thomas: Weapons Inspector) as he's the rare type of comedian who can communicate the bland bullshit of intricate politics in a hilarious (yet slightly depressing) way - like a later British Bill Hicks.

Well done Deputy...this was in my 'To Sift' queue - but wasn't sure if the Sift would appreciate it (glad Mark Thomas' doing well, it's a shame there's not more of his work online).
