Weezer - El Scorcho

Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson - Scream

The music video for "Scream", directed by Mark Romanek and production designer Tom Foden, is one of Jackson's most critically acclaimed. In 1995, it gained 11 MTV Video Music Award Nominations — more than any other music video — and won "Best Dance Video", "Best Choreography", and "Best Art Direction". The song and its accompanying video are a response to the backlash Jackson received from the media after being accused of child molestation in 1993. A year later, it won a Grammy for Best Music Video, Short Form; shortly afterward Guinness World Records listed it as the most expensive music video ever made at a cost of $7 million. -Wikipedia

This a Mark Romanek music video. The DVD "The Work of Director Mark Romanek" has a discussion of how this video was made. It is part of series of DVDs about music video directors. The other directors in the series are: Anton Corbijn, Chris Cunningham, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze and Stephane Sednaoui.

Wikipedia has lists for each director's music videos. Here's the one for Mark Romanek:

Nine Inch Nails - Closer - (uncensored)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Can't Stop"

Beck - Devil's Haircut

Mark Romanek is the director of this music video. He makes references to "Midnight Cowboy" with the imagery. In particular there is scene with a car coming at Beck. According to interviews on the Mark Romanek DVD (The Work of Director Mark Romanek), Beck was struck by the car. A similar scene in "Midnight Cowboy" had Dustin Hoffman and Robert Voight crossing the street. Dustin Hoffman hits his fist on the hood and says "We're walkin' here!"

I hope this makes it this time.

Weezer - El Scorcho

This is a Mark Romanek music video. It is one of the music videos featured on “The Work of Director Mark Romanek” DVD.

What’s different about this video from the other Mark Romanek music videos is that Weezer and Romanek fought during the shoot. In all the other interviews on the DVD, bands gushed about what great friends they’d become with Romanek. Many of them put their trust in his vision and were very happy with the results.

Also, interesting is the little joke Romanek threw in: a florescent sign “weerez”, instead of “weezer.” The band later ended up doing t-shirts with the misspelling.

You have seen many of Romanek music videos. Wikipedia has a thorough list.

On the DVD “The Work of Director Mark Romanek” Romanek talks about the look of this video being inspired by the movie “Midnight Cowboy.”

Also, there is discussion about Beck Hansen being hit by a car during the making of this video. His knee was injured. You’ll notice a car coming at him as he crosses the street. In “Midnight Cowboy,” Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman are almost hit by a cab. Hoffman yells “I’m walkin’ here . . .”

Thank you. When I hear the song now, I think of the video.

I recommend the DVD, “The Work of Director Spike Jonze.” It profiles a number of his music videos and provides commentary from Jonze and the musicians who worked with him. The DVD is from a series of seven DVDs by Palm Pictures. The other music video directors profiled are: Anton Corbijn, Chris Cunningham, Jonathan Glazer, Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek and Stephane Sednaoui.
