The only movie on his list that would be on mine was Lost in Translation... until he got to Unbreakable, and I was floored. Unbreakable is one of my favorite movies ever. So that's cool. I went and saw it with a group of friends, and no one else seemed to like it nearly as much as I did.

Most of the list I've never seen. Lots of Asian films in there; I wish I had the fortitude to check them out.

P.S. Is it so hard to say Shyamalan?

This is a great place, I've seen many sites, with trolls everywhere, This place isn't like that, which is why I have been lurking here for years... It took me forever just to commit and join, and forever again to make my first post. I am certifiably now hooked!

I work in a job where everything is communicated through email. Quite a bit is lost in an email, and sometimes, you just need to pick up a phone, presto, things get fixed.
I'm not saying anyone here needs to pick up a phone, but remember "allot is lost in translation" which makes it easy to let your hackles up.

^You have to understand my background as well. I had no concept of racism when I was a child. All of the attention to it seems to only create a since of something that shouldn't be there. I think the difference is color blindness as apposed to color sensitivity. For me, it will be a better day when people don't care about such things at all than when supposed markers occur.

That was my point. It will be more magical when we don't care about race at all, that was my point, seems to have been lost in translation though.

I think I understand the content of your retort, but it doesn't seem to hold weight when I view the content a second and third time. The idea that he trys to merge is that being elite is a good thing and trys to make that into what the idea of elitism corresponds to. Or in other words, if you are a top mind in your feild, you are elite. If you are elite, you have nothing to be ashamed of (which I agree with). And if you are elite, that makes you also subject to the term elitism which isn't a bad thing, but just a relation to your being in the elite status of your field.

This, of course, could be something that is lost in translation and I would offer my retraction if he was just asserting that this is just an inflammatory statment.

It wasn't the academic record he was attacking at all, but the location of their education...unless the statment "where else can you find people dumb enough to belive in bush but in XXX location school" is ment to be some attack on that persons actual acedimic record? That doesn't sound like a list of their GPA, what if they graduated with honors and had 15 years of public service? We don't get those facts, just the ones that paint them as mindless trolls regardless of anything to back up this claim other than they atended xxx school.

It doesn't take a degree from XXX school in the studies of YYY to make you a genious or an idiot. If he would of just said this person is incompatant because their actions hold to it, that would be a valid assertions. But there are all sorts of Yale and harvard people out there making mistake after mistake, but no one would dare call Yale or Harvard the breading grounds of fools and idiots. Fools and idiots are everywhere, and people also make mistakes, some major. In that, wide sweeping alagations of people being morons because they went to a certain school isn't reasonable in the least; and I think is an obvious indication of his personal bias.

Hmm, I got sent the embed from my friend on his iPhone. Since they use their own proprietary version of YouTube, that might be the problem but it seemed to work fine for me. Looking into it!

The UK and the US versions are certainly different animals but I prefer the UK version, mainly because I can relate to the location setting, and I think possibly there is the certain element of hopelessness which is lost in translation in the US version, However, as I have already stated, this could be down to locational variation.

For those who don't find the office funny, really, its not meant to be laugh out loud funny, the real humour for the show comes from desperation and the sheer cring factor for the characters, and the social commentary that it makes about how much some office workers enjoy their lives.

There is a poem by the late great sir John Betjemen about slough, (the location of the original, for those that don't know), which the first few lines are:

"Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!"

That pretty much sums up why the location was set slough, just off a roundabout.

People who take the bible literally would do well to read other books concerning ancient history, early religion, and the history of the Christian church. The bible, as we know it today, was assembled by bishops centuries after the time of Christ. It has since been translated and edited by other religious and political figures, always for one agenda or another. And much of the tales and teachings are derivatives of older 'pagan' religions from the Mediteranean and Near East. It is a product of history, and as such possesses great merit as a historical document, just like the works of Homer and Virgil provide insight into Greek and Roman history. But it is essentially myth. Nearly all academic historians would agree with me on this. If taken literally, one would be faced with sorting out the myriad of contradictions contained within it. Oh, and you'd have to learn Greek, Latin, Aramaic, and Hebrew in order to really understand the text anyway. The relationship between language and thought is such that certain concepts and ideas can never be translated properly...you know, "Lost in translation." Anyway, I'm an atheist, but I try to be respectful of all people of faith. Believe what you want, but please, I beg you. Use reason. We are all rational beings, and if you believe in a God, than you must believe that he or she or it gave you a brain for a reason. Use it! Ask questions, don't just listen to what you're told.

Oh, and as for evolution. In this case, the use of "theory" should be restricted to the scientific community. For the non-scientific, the word "fact" would be an excellent supplement. Yes, there is debate in the field of human evolution (paleoanthropology), but by now we have the chronology fairly well figured out. At least enough to guarantee that humans were around long before 6,000 years ago. Unless you can prove that the decay constant of a radioactive isotope is not constant after all (good luck with that).
