150mph Police Chase w/ Stretch Cadillac Limo

Water fueled car! Thanks, Japan! (Science Talk Post)

quantumushroom says...

My guess is: scam. Because if you could get a car to run on water, why make it tiny? Make it a Hummer limo...bigger space means you can put a larger "magic box" in the back to extract the hydrogen.

The girl who silenced the world for 6 minutes

Memorare says...

Nice speech by one of the wealthy elite, who went to the finest schools daddy's money can buy. "Cullis-Suzuki received a B.Sc. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University in 2002."

Ooh yes, she spent a whole day doing photo ops with 3rd world kids living in hell. How noble. Then she took her limo back to her white picket fence gated community far away from the smelly disgusting masses and their annoying problems.

If you want to impress someone put ALL those millions in a trust that doesn't pay you a dime and go LIVE your life in the slums and ghettos you claim to care soo much about.

No, not really. The initial hostage problem was "solved" when Reagan took office. When Carter and Reagan were in the limo going to the inaugural together, Carter got a call that the hostages were being released. There is much speculation that somehow the Reagan team orchestrated the release, that there was a back channel deal to keep the hostages through the election, and that once Reagan got elected and inaugurated, they would be let go.

Campaign contributions - here's what I don't get. (Politics Talk Post)

Lurch says...

I'm just really not too well versed in the intricacies of current campaign finance laws and their related punishments, honestly. So, all my comments are just personal opinion and not researched. I didn't think anyone would care so much about my personal opinion that I would have to keep coming back and elaborating. I think dGandhi makes an important point about corporations being considered persons with connected first amendment protections. I think in the case of political contributions, corporations should be viewed differently. Donations should be allowed, but with a cap. Exceeding the cap should be punished with fines for the corporation, and jail time with a possible bar from political office for the candidate.

In a way, it's like accepting gifts from corporations when you are looking for a business partner. Most corporations ban the accepting of gifts given to employees by competing organizations to prevent bias in decision making. I know someone that works in a large corporation and is responsible for choosing new IT products to be purchased. He is constantly offered limo rides, expensive dinners, and other misc gifts. By company policy, these gifts can't be accepted because they are specifically designed to give you a bias towards a particular product. So why can't campaign contributions be looked at in the same light? I'm sure that for-profit organizations aren't giving out of kindness, but for special consideration. Accepting millions in donations puts you in debt to the people that bought your office.

Obama on Gas Prices

quantumushroom says...

Those "billions in oil profits" B. Hussein Obama and Billswife are slavering over must be reinvested for more oil exploration and technology. The federal mafia takes 20 cents in taxes per gallon of gas sold; they're already getting their share of the action.

It's government regulations that make building new refineries next to impossible, not the free market.

While it's true that reducing demand would reduce gas prices, he's stated at the beginning that won't happen due to China's and India's increased oil demands.

There's another way prices would lower: by increasing the available supply of oil, but the "hippies" in Congress (including McSame) won't let us tap our own supply (ANWR) because it might damage caribou self-esteem.

Alternative fuels? They're going to have to fight it out. Just like BluRay and HD-DVD...let the free market decide which technology wins between hydrogen and electricity and whatever. All government can do is prop up a loser like ethanol to delay whatever was destined to win.

Do you really favor a would-be President who tells you what you're allowed drive, be it scooter or limo? I don't. It's none of his damned business.

Arrogance without substance.

How Much Is Enough

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

For me it comes down to nature/nurture. Are humans hard-wired for selfishness? Do we require the invisible hand of the market economy to keep things going? I hope not - but then Marx, Lenin, Guevera etc hoped not too. They also believed in the "oneness" of the people.

The experiment of communism failed precisely because human nature climbed into their beautiful machine and gummed up the works. Dachas on the black sea, Zil limos for party cronies. So much for "to each according to their needs".

I'm not a communist - but the abject failure of communism really depresses me. I'm waiting for the robots to take over- we need to take humans and our selfish, monkey-brains out of the equation.

Oscar Flashback: Michael Moore tells the truth, gets booed

k8_fan says...

It was in an article in Premiere magazine, with various attendees talking about their reaction. Sadly, they don't have their archives up yet. There were additional first-person accounts on Oscarwatch.com and straightdope.com.

But the main thing is the simple application of logic. The audience gave Moore a STANDING OVATION, accompanied by yelling and whistling. Moore gave exactly the same speech as he gave at the Independent Spirit Awards. There is considerable overlap between the membership of AMPAS and the Independent Spirit Awards. Do you think they'd suddenly boo a speech they had cheered a few days before? But there weren't any stagehands near the mics in the tent in Santa Monica. Their reaction was the basis of the joke by host Steve Martin: “It was so sweet backstage, you should have seen it. The Teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo".

The Chicago Sun-Times reported this:

Moore wanted it made clear that despite the loud boos from the stagehands, the Hollywood audience was behind him: “Don’t report that there was a split decision in the hall because five people booed,” he said. “I did not hear that. I saw the entire place stand up and applaud, applaud a film that talks about how we are manipulated by the fear that’s put forth by the White House and put forth by corporate America to create a culture of violence at home and abroad.”
