New Found Glory - My Friends Over You

Kimmel Takes On Gawker Stalker

justinianrex says...

Fuck Jimmy Kimmel. I mean really screw that sanctimonious ass. I personally never look at the gawker stalker map, but Emily did not invent celebrity gossip journalism, the idea that US weekly or Star has standards is a laugh, and go read some of the asinine comments on the site. It's a chance for regular idiots to make snarky comments like the following:
Jude Law heading into Gray's Papaya. He was talking on his cell phone as he walked in. He came out with a big bag, looks like he took lots of hot dogs to go! Jude better watch that figure of his!

Much ado about nothing. This site lets the vapid public write their own supermarket tabloid captions. If you want to see a site that I'd be worried about if I was a celebrity visit thesuperficial.com.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - Teaser Trailer

Sylvester_Ink says...

I wouldn't go as far as all that. Remember, it's a tribute to pulp sci-fi, and as such it focused on a lot of the old cliches found in the genre (the attack of the robots, the plucky female reporter, the retro special effects, the ridiculously grandiose schemes of the villain). It also pays a lot of homages to movies like Metropolis, The Forbidden Planet, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers. One scene is almost identical to the Fleischer Studios Superman short, "Mechanical Monsters."

If anything, it bears a lot of similarities to the Indiana Jones movies, except Indiana Jones plays on the adventure pulps and Sky Captain plays on the sci-fi pulps. If you're looking for a deep and immersive plot, you'll be hard pressed to find it in either movie. They're both essentially homages to these old styles of entertainment. (Granted Indiana Jones did it better, but Sky Captain did a respectable job as well.)

I will agree that the movie has its flaws, most notably Gweneth Paltrow's acting, though fortunately Jude Law makes up for this. However, the plot, music, stylistic elements, and visuals were, for the most part, spot-on, so I feel that it's not too much to say that it succeeded on most levels.

I guess the movie is most appreciated if you've seen some of the older works it's paying homage to. I spent a lot of my youth reading those older comics, listening to those older radio shows, and viewing a few of the movies/cartoons, so Sky Captain had a pretty big impact on me.

Bogus Dow Spokesman - '$12bn to Bhopal Disaster Victims'

deputydog says...

'On December 3, 2004, the twentieth anniversary of the Bhopal disaster, Andy Bichlbaum appeared on BBC World as "Jude Finisterra", a Dow Chemical spokesman. Dow is the owner of Union Carbide, the company responsible for the chemical disaster which killed thousands and left over 120,000 requiring lifelong care. Union Carbide was originally forced to pay US$470 million in compensation to survivors, which amounts to about US$500 per victim. (Note: Dow PR Head Kathy Hunt was quoted as stating that $500 is "plenty good for an Indian.")

On their fake Dow Chemical Website, the Yes Men first said as clearly and emphatically as possible that Dow Chemical Company had no intention whatsoever of repairing the damage. The real company received considerable backlash and both the real Dow and the phony Dow denied the statements, but Dow took no real action.

The Yes Men decided to pressure Dow further, so as "Finisterra" went on the news to claim that Dow planned to liquidate Union Carbide and use the resulting $12 billion to pay for medical care, clean up the site, and fund research into the hazards of other Dow products. After two hours of wide coverage, Dow issued a press release denying the statement, ensuring even greater coverage of the phony news of a cleanup.'

Does anyone else hate Jude Law as much as I do? I don't think I can actually justify the hatred - all I know is that I'd enjoy seeing him physically assaulted / permanently unemployed.
