He usually does a better job of mixing the guests and allowing them all to talk. It's my favorite part of his shows, when the big super stars are treated the same as the least famous person on the couch.

Johnny Depp had him star struck as well.

That was the point. The joke at the Golden Globes was that Gervais was cruelly picking on an undeserving target. in that sense, I don't think the joke was really at Tim Allen's expense - we were laughing/cringing at the cruelty itself, rather than the target of the cruelty.
