UFC 121: Brock Lesnar vs Cain Velasquez

budzos says...

I enjoy a good UFC match and the surrounding drama, but does anyone else wish they'd go back to the days of UFC I through III where it was a lot more like Street Fighter II? It used to be a crazy clash of styles and personalities... now everyone does "MMA style striking plus grappling" and the main difference between fighters is their specific mix of striking (do they also kick?) and grappling (are they former wrestlers or life-long jiu-jitsu practicioners?).

I've always thought of sports as a substitute for combat... all those guys in the NHL, NBA, NFL would have been renowned warriors if they were born vikings, celts, moors, vassals, etc. at certain times throughout history. They do sports because they're extraordinarily good with their bodies... biomechanical geniuses. Fortunately their placement in time allows them to use these skills to their own betterment without mortal risk. Because sports are only analagous to combat. So I can appreciate the point of putting the words "sport" in sarcasm-quotes when talking about a sport that is about beating the shit out of another person. Once the sport becomes actual combat, the metaphor is so direct (if all sports are a metaphor for combat) that instead of a "sport" they should just call it "professional combat". Of course, this is just semantic wankery. It's a sport.

Joe Rogan's "You're a Fucking Human Being"

AnimalsForCrackers says...

>> ^swedishfriend:

joe rogan is watched by over a billion people every ufc event (yes over a billion people watch each UFC event). He still does stand up and he is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, had a great part on one of the best sitcoms of all time, News Radio. He is an open cannabis user (brave for media personality). He is teh roxxors.

He's also a moon hoaxer, i.e. he thinks the Moon landings were faked. Unless he's retracted those statements and admitted he was very wrong(some time later) after being completely dismantled and destroyed by Phil Plait, of Bad Astronomy fame, on I think it was Penn & Teller's radio show. He made a huge fool of himself; I can only hope he's learned something from that experience.

Can a Karate Chop Cause Unconsciousness?

gtjwkq says...

Very interesting.

Fictional characters on TV and in movies usually hit each other on the back of the head, which doesn't work in real life when you want to render someone unconscious, unless you do it hard enough to cause irreparable damage.

They should use this Karate chop instead or Jiu-jitsu style chokes to make it more believable.

"Quantum Jujutsu"

rembar says...

I've seen these vids and heard about this guy before. From what I hear, he's a pretty legit grappler and his students could do much worse, but that he has a tendency for going overboard with ridiculous demos like this one. It's been done to death over at Bullshido.net. (Thread one and thread two.)

No downvote from me, but I will say that I hate to see the beautiful simplicity of jiu jitsu raped like this in tangled lines of non-resistance and the near-pathological need to impress others.

no i don't have much time for training. what i mostly do, is that i train (and instruct) in taijiquan. the club also has a sanshou team, so i have done a tiny bit of that, but i feel that when it comes to actually being hit and hitting someone, my interest is more academic. hehe. i am too old, and i need all my fingers alive for my job (as a composer, at the piano).
i also did 2-3 years(?) of aikido, and then some medieval european fencing with sword and buckler... and fencing is actually what i miss the most so when i get the time again, i think i want to start training more fencing and taiji sword as well.

From order of most to least experience, for unarmed martial arts:
Brazilian jiu-jitsu / Submission grappling
Judo
Boxing
Muay Thai
Kickboxing
Wrestling

By this, I mean I'm a lazy sub grappler, a shitty striker, and an even worse standup grappler. Hahah, but I still love doing it.

I have also trained krav maga, wing chun, hung gar kung fu, and aikido for varying amounts of time, but I don't consider them "arts I know" for various reasons. I remember you sifted that old-school GJJ vid, do you train BJJ or something?

540 Spin Kick Triple Board Break! (5 Seconds)

Ryjkyj says...

One common misconception about Tae Kwon Do is that it was designed for some kind of cage fight. Tae Kwon Do is a military dicipline. Whenever I practiced a form in TKD I was told to visualize 8 opponents. (who would presumably be less disciplined.)
The application of any art changes according for the situation. But if 3 people jump you on the street, just try tackling 1 of them Brazilain Jiu-Jitsu style and see how far it gets you.

What's funny is there is tae kwon do, possibly some judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, capoeira and karate, but as far as I can tell, absolutely no kung fu.

What's screwed up is I know at least one of the women, possibly two or more, and I doubt they had any knowledge of this music vid being made. Creepy....
