Alright... I just got Intel from H.Q. E.T.A. 5 minutes to bedtime boys, let's wrap it up!

That and the Max line... "Stay up soldier! Here's a med kit, patch yourself up!" and a few others scattered around... but the bedtime boys one was the one that made me have to sift it...

Julian Assange went front and center again with a piece in some new'ish Aussie news outlet called The Stringer. I wouldn't have noticed it, but Zero Hedge picked it up.

Assange's claim: Google and the US State Department have closer ties than anyone would be willing to admit, with Jared Cohen, Director of Google Ideas, acting as "Google’s director of regime change".

Hefty claims, although lacking in detail. "Don't be evil"... it had such a nice ring to it, back in the days.

Edit: And to put the icing on the cake, Foreign Policy released official documents showing how the Reagan administration gave target intel to the Iraqis, knowing full well it'll lead to a chemical attack. Great timing, all things considered.

Part 2: Obama talks about the law and Trayvon Martin

radx says...

Wouldn't the stop-and-frisk program qualify as one of those issues?

Or how about putting American citizens under surveillance, "not because of charges of wrongdoing but ethnicity"? Would that quality?

I'm only asking because Obama spoke out in favor of NYT police commissioner Ray Kelly as the new head of DHS and Kelly's actions just ooze racial profiling.

In his defense, I wouldn't ever rule out the possibility that our gov't could ever become tyrannical. It's just not likely. That and there are going to be a huge number of signs leading up to it and "taking away guns" is not one of them. It's irrelevant because in either case it doesn't change the fact that if the government ever truly did become tyrannical, in order to successfully revolt against it you're going to need a HELL of a lot more than just some assault rifles to overthrow a government gone bad. You're going to need 1) popular support, 2) military defections/support to your side to provide training/support/supplies. In this age, intel and cyber warfare is going to be as valuable if not more valuable than bullets.

I'm sorry, but this romantic myth of a bunch of "patriotic" militia groups rising up armed to overthrow a modern government armed only with a small arsenal of weapons is just that...a stupid myth. News flash, Red Dawn was just a movie, a fictional story, not a how-to manual. You're going to need a hell of a lot more than a 2nd Amendment to overthrow a government in this age.

But yeah, going back to the original argument. It's not impossible, but the idea that gov't is going to go tyrannical is just as ridiculous. Losing an election is not the same as having a tyrannical gov't When we stop having elections, then come talk to me. A lot of shit has to happen in order for gov't to become truly tyrannical and your guy not winning the election isn't one of them. Taxes being raised is not tyrannical gov't.

I was trying to have a conversation with you Chogs, but you seem more interested in taunting gwiz and Lann. We haven't had a good debate in ages. Let's have a little back and forth if you feel up to it. I know you tend to get very emotional on this issue, so if you think you might have problems keeping your cool, we don't have to.

Here's a starting point if you like (to be read in a spirited but not hostile tone):

The government will never turn tyrannical and confiscate all guns. That is one of many right wing fantasies you have errantly bought into. If you and other right wing gun lovers tried to stage a coup against the strongest military in history of the world, you would lose, and lose badly. tl;dr Don't bring a gun to a tank fight. Another point of delusion seems to be that you think your country-fried junta would be viewed by Americans as heroic rather than just plain fascist.

VideoSift 5.0 bugs go here. (Sift Talk Post)

The new site is a resource hog. Tonight was the first time I've visited VS in a few days. I did as I normally do and opened several videos in background tabs. When I tried to watch a video it was extremely choppy. I thought it was that one video so I went on to the next, but they were all doing it. I then noticed my CPU fan was louder than normal, so I opened up Process Explorer and see Firefox using up 25% CPU (which is 100% of one core) and the memory usage was counting up like a clock.

I restarted Firefox and opened one video, but the video is still choppy. I opened the video in YouTube, and it was choppy there as well until I closed the VideoSift tab. Once the VideoSift tab was closed, the video played smoothly.

Right now with only this talk page open CPU usage constant around 10% and spiking up to 25% and even typing is laggy. I'm on Win7 64-bit with Firefox 17, Intel Core i5 quad core and 12GB RAM.

I wouldn't mind an SSD to be honest, though my upgrade skills are so rusty I don't know how I'd get the OS on it. Reinstall I guess...

Intel SSD come with a program which moves your O/S over. It was way easy.

I've burnt up a few computers - releasing the magic smoke, as they say. Computers tend to run quite hot, and even a few minutes with a faulty fan can do it, particularly in essential components with less heat-sink like the southbridge. But, like @swedishfriend said, there's no reason it should light on fire like that.
>> ^longde:

Interesting. I've heard of batteries combusting, and CPU packaging melting, but never heard of combustion of a CPU or its packaging. How would this happen? What material in the packaging would be susceptible to becoming inflamed?
Also, I know some CPUs have thermal sensors built in to "lock up" at a particular temperature (at least some Intel CPUs). Why wouldn't these kick in? >> ^swedishfriend:
CPUs do combust. It happens all the time. Don't know why there would be more than some smoke though as it wouldn't be surrounded by many materials that would fuel a fire like that. Reading malformed data may cause a system to malfunction which may leave it open for someone to attack it but as stated before there is no reason the data on its own would be executed as a program. Pretty dumb overall. Is this from a spoof type show, I didn't recognize it at all.
