Why Visiting This Lost Island Will Kill You

newtboy says...

Fuck that guy. He wasn’t properly quarantined, not screened for infectious diseases at all, and definitely had diseases and/or parasites that could have decimated the population if they weren’t very lucky.
And he went there to intentionally destroy their culture.
I hope his estate was confiscated to help pay to keep them isolated, and anyone who helped him was imprisoned or fined into the poor house. This was an attempted cultural genocide.
Leave them alone!

ProselytizIng should be a felony. Repeat offenders should get life.

Trump Says COVID “Affects Virtually Nobody”

simonm says...

So, if these (very soft) numbers are taken into account and this (highly infectious) disease continues to spread throughout the whole of the US, there's going to be this rough breakdown:

0-18: 2217 dead
20-49: 23,840 dead
50-69: 417,000 dead
70+: 3,029,400 dead

Total deaths nearing 3.5 million. And this is considered something to dismiss without concern?

Of course, this is ignoring the fact that there can be long term implications for people who are infected, but survive, too.

The US govt last week updated the survival rates (i.e., IF infected) for Covid19:

0-19 99.997%
20-49 99.98%
50-69 99.5%
70+ 94.6%

Aaaaahahahaha-ha-ha-aaaaaahahahahaha!
That's a good one, Bob. We hate fake news, so we want the fake news president who's told more lies in his official capacity in 3.6 years than all presidents combined.
Another red tsunami just like 2018? I'll be on the beach waiting.

Come on Bobby, even you are better than that twaddle.

Edit:
32.9% drop in GDP is a great job to you, but Obama's constant positive and higher than Trump's numbers were proof he's incompetent.
180000 dead Americans and rising faster all the time with no end in sight is a great job to you, but two dead by Ebola (a more deadly and more infectious disease btw) with zero infections in America is a horrific failure Obama should have quit over.
A conservatively estimated 30000000 jobs lost, 1/2 permanently (some estimates say over 50000000) is a great job to you.
Failed trade talks and wars that have cost us hundreds of BILLIONS in losses is a great job to you, and Obama's successful trade deals and no trade wars made him a failure.
Untold trillions wasted thanks to a disastrous pandemic response, much stolen thanks to zero oversight is a great job, but the federal loans Obama offered to halt the Republican recession were socialism because he took collateral for the money and didn't just hand it out for nothing.
🤦‍♂️

Odd how America does so much better when you say we are failing, and infinitely worse when you say we are doing a great job....almost like you're rooting for our failure....comrade.

The surfaces--and the bathrooms in particular---totally true. The air? Can be an issue (there are studies)--but the filtration systems themselves are excellent. HEPA 99.7%. There are seating tricks; sit either first row economy ("Economy Plus") or last row of first class. Select the window seat and try to put your companion next to you or---fly an airline with empty seat policies (e.g. JetBlue). Don't rush to get on (although they are mostly now loading back to front anyway)--get on as reasonable late as you can--that way, all those people aren't walking by you exhaling on you.

The reason for the first row economy or last row first is: you don't want people walking by you all flight on the way to the bathrooms; you want to be the person walking by THEM (selfish but...); and the same with the window seating and the last-reasonable minute boarding.

Also, I carry a two zip locks on at the top of my carry on bag; one has three disposable gloves, Clorox or equivalent wipes, and Purell or equiv. etc. Move into seat out of aisle, then with gloves on, wipe down the latch to the overhead (you're going to touch it twice) and then every surface from the aisle to window that you touch---armrests, seat back display, seat back display surface, bulkhead, window shade, tray table locks, tray table both surfaces and edges, buckle, tang, seat controls, audio controls---no point to seat fabric--then roll the glove inside out with the wipes inside and put into the empty ZIploc as a trash bag. Usually two wipes does the job. Purell hands and settle in.

Been doing this since before the pandemic because I totally agree with you.

Airplane bathrooms are all about not touching surfaces with clean hands after you've cleaned them...they are staggeringly filthy. Infectious disease experts have been known to gag in horror at what gets swabbed from the sink handles, toilet flush, and door lock/handle lol. Paper towel is your friend--as our your forearms and elbows.

BicycleRepairMan says...

The point about global warming is that all the available evidence shows that:
1. It is happening
2. It is man-made.

Why is that a problem? well, because we dont know what the consequences could be, we dont know how to stop the rising temperature or if theres a limit or if or when we can reverse the trend.

All of the above could happen, or it might not, some of it may not be due to GW and some of it may be. The fact is that we are messing with earths ecosystem, which is the very reason we are here in the first place. We grew up and evolved as a species on this planet, under these conditions, how will a rapid(geologically rapid 100-200 years) change in climate affect us as a species? how will it affect millions of other species? How will it affect weather? viruses? diseases? deserts? forests?

We don't know

Thats the point. some of the above are possible consequences of global warming*.

Ron Paul: Drug war killed more people than drugs

longde says...

According to wikipedia, people exclusively consumed raw milk prior to industrialization.

Yeah, and the average lifespan as below 40; and epidemics and plagues were common. People did alot of things that wouldn't pass muster today.

And even some claim that raw milk can be produced hygienically without the dangerous pathogens. I wouldn't know one way or another, but I'd also suspect you don't either, right?

You're using the same line as climate change deniers and anti-vacination advocates: Use layman's ignorance to deny established science, engineering or medical fact/procedure. I can use that technique to cast doubt on any complex scientific/medical/engineering issue (which in the states, is practically every technical subject).

The bottom line is, with the issue of raw milk, like anti-vaccination, it's not about curbing individual rights, but reducing the public safety risk. You can catch infectious diseases from raw milk. I have a right to not be exposed to some disease-ridden fool.

60 Minutes on the impact of antivaccination lobbying

Opus_Moderandi says...

Opinion: I think this report is an appeal to emotion which is extremely difficult to overcome (objectively) because it involves the death of infants.

Fact: The instances of infectious diseases since the discovery of vaccination are significantly lower than periods prior to.

Opinion: I think what they (lobbyists) are saying is that if you overcome a disease naturally your immune system will be stronger because of it. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, as the saying goes.

Fact: A vaccination is actually a weaker form of the disease being vaccinated against.

Fact: The leading anti-vaccination lobbyist has no formal medical training...

Opinion: ... And I'm guessing a lot of people in this thread don't either. I know I don't. Everybody has the same information available to them, I guess it's how you interpret it.

Fact: I don't have children and no one close to me has ever lost a child due to an infectious disease. And they are all vaccinated. None of them are autistic.

Anti-vaccination: Rebecca Watson follows the money

Lawdeedaw says...

I should note that I am pro-vaccine and hope no one misunderstood my position on the matter.

@Gwiz--a lot of diseases simply evolve, and a lot can and do last years without a host, or they live within an unknowing host. Also, there will always be hosts available because there is a certain impossibility with vaccinating everyone in the world. 7 billion is a great a number…

@Geesus Freak--I agree with everything you said. When I speak of nature's wrath, I am speaking of the impossibility of overcoming nature in many circumstances.

And well researched, you got me on the eradication of smallpox. Smallpox, thankfully, seems to be one of those diseases that, while highly contagious without vaccines, was pretty much dead without active hosts. So we can be grateful that smallpox's severe limitations and the vaccine killed it off. I will also add that we eradicated rinderpest too (A cattle disease.)

(Although undocumented cases of smallpox may exist, I have to agree with you, since the proof does not support my old position--it is possible that two diseases have been eradicated.)

However, I am not impressed that we got rid of one infectious disease that targets humans out of the current number of available maladies. Nor are we certain that smallpox will never again be a future problem.

But I digress. As far as childbirth and mortality... That is one part of nature that can be controlled easily. I wouldn't classify that as a wrath of nature. Hurricanes, floods (Some of which man tried to prevent and caused more of...like a plastic bag clogging a storm drain...) Diseases, stupidity, etc...All those are nature's way of saying, "Die. No just kidding. Seriously, just die

Rottenseed,

People are born with bad health and it is not their fault. It cannot be their fault. They were given no choice. I was referring to making people pay more to keep a person alive who was doomed before they were born, to an early death.

But another argument can be made; what about the environment caused them to have congenital birth defects, or was it a hereditary illness? Was it smoking, ingested chemicals, or something of a hereditary natural cause?

I can't be sure, because it was a long time ago, but I think Richard Dawkins discussed this in one of his books. A hereditary illness is natural selection, predation is natural selection, but a congenital birth defect because mom smoked is not natural selection. The baby that mom had could have lived to reproduce, but we shan't no because of the congenital defect.

Natural selection is the process by which those heritable traits that make it more likely for an organism to survive and successfully reproduce become more common in a population over successive generations. It is a key mechanism of evolution.

What I find interesting is that these Insurance companies were created largely out of good intention, yet they are so horribly wrong. Making decisions based on profit.

Could one argue that the evolution of corporation mirrors the evolution of the Homo Genus? I suppose, could that mean that the only predator man has is another man? I know I'm begging the question, but it is something to ponder.

The Health care system in Japan is one of the best in the world. Japan provides healthcare services, including screening examinations for particular diseases at no direct cost to the patient, prenatal care, and infectious disease control, are provided by national and local governments. Payment for personal medical services is offered through a universal health care insurance system that provides relative equality of access, with fees set by a government committee. People without insurance through employers can participate in a national health insurance program administered by local governments. Patients are free to select physicians or facilities of their choice and cannot be denied coverage. Hospitals, by law must be run as non-profit and managed by physicians. For profit corporations are not allowed to own or operate hospitals.
