QI - The Sturmgewehr

chicchorea says...

Someone knows their firearms.
If I may offer and WADR, the Krummlauf option was offered for the MG42 and the STG44 with the "I"(as was correctly stated by radx) used by the infantry and a "P"(Panzer) variant for tanks. Barrels were issued in 30, 45, 60, and 90 degree curves. The 30 was quite accurate, under 1.5 MOA, and all practically accurate. Barrel life was limited, as already stated, with the 30 degree barrels rated roughly at 300 rds and the 45 degree at approximately 160 rds. I have seen one fired and a couple on film. Truly an influential design. Kalashnikov borrowed the gas system for the AK for instance.

[Geek]You know where the need for this modification supposedly arose?
Tanks designed without means for CQC/infantry suppression, particularly the Elephant, a heavy tank destroyer based on spare parts of the Porsche Tiger after Henschel's design was chosen. Great armor, immense firepower, piss-poor mobility - and no MG. So they developed the "Maschinenpistolen-Vorsatz P": a weapon system to be fitted on the StG44 which allowed the crew to cover blind spots from within the tank. It consists of a barrel bent 90 degrees, a periscope, an adapter and a hull mounting.
"Vorsatz I" (or J, can't remember) used a barrel bent at 30 degrees and was supposed to be used from within open-topped APCs as well as in urban combat, though it took about a minute to put it onto your rifle and the barrel was useless after 150-300 rounds. I imagine the 45 degree version was to be used in the same manner.
Rheinmetall still have some in their collection.[/geek]

When in reality the Sherman tank was inferior to the German design.

Well, one could argue that it's more of a difference in the underlying philosophy than quality of engineering. German doctrin was based upon the use of what we now refer to as MBTs (Panzer I-V) while the Brits used infantry tanks (Mathilda, Valentine, Churchill, etc) and cruiser tanks (Cruiser, Crusader, Cromwell, etc), and the US troops deployed infantry tanks (Sherman) and TDs (M10, M18, M36). Once you split breakthrough and exploitation or infantry support and anti-tank warfare into separate vehicles, you're bound to end up with vastly different designs that might draw the short straw more often than not if not used properly.

If you include the lack of resources and manpower in particular, Wehrmacht tanks had to be superior individually, because they were doomed to be inferior numerically. Thus, the US could focus on easier and cheaper production. You don't need Zeiss optics and Krupp steel if you simply aim for number superiority. I'd say both design principles fulfilled their respective roles just fine, even though they could hardly have been more different. Simple, easy to maintain and reliable versus the latest in technology.

The Firefly was nice though, 17pdr was a beast.

Or maybe what I wrote is just a load of cockswallow and the German designs were, in fact, simply superior.

That said, this kitty was one hell of an engineering masterpiece. If they hadn't lost access to rare materials, even the transmission might have worked properly and those buggers wouldn't have broken down every 100km.

Still waiting to see the Panther at Koblenz again, last time was a blast.

America's Elite In Action

NordlichReiter says...

Sniper's have a stigma, a stereotype. Not the movie stereotype but the stereotype described by Carlos Hathcock in numerous books. They operate outside of the standard sense of infantry, and as such they are a special breed of soldier; capable of killing so personally impersonal. Like a drone pilot.

This is a result of the Militarization of Police. Escalation.

Can't help but think of that. Don't ever point your weapon against anything you don't want to shoot, because you just might.

This is very hard to watch...
The sniper talking about "taking a bead" on his neighbors needs some serious therapy. Seems if your half crazy your either a criminal or a cop.
Oh, and that rapping is annoyingly horrible.

You're Stuck on Stupid

Holy shit this guy is made of awesome. I'd almost forgotten what real Army Infantry officers are like.

What you're looking at is a man who gets stuff done. He knows his mission, the objective is in sight and any pathetic opposition you present is not going to slow him down. You either get on board, get out of the way or get run over. I love these guys.

Sniper Kills in Thailand Protests

NordlichReiter says...

I saw this on Live Leak, the consensus there was that this was the work of a rubber bullet to the head. Which have been known to cause massive trauma.

If that was a .223 full metal jacket I'm surprised to see so much trauma. Given other pictures of similar trauma, on the internet, it would appear that a .223 would not cause the brain to flop out on the concrete like that. It seems like a rubber slug or something to that extent. Of course we don't have sufficient proof, but we can formulate a good hypothesis.

If it were a sniper, there would have been much, much more damage. I mean like his head would have popped in a red mist and his body would have slumped directly to the ground, not as if it were being knocked over. I get the feeling that if it were a lethal round then it wasn't a sniper but regular infantry; who is a good marksman. The circumstances just don't lead me to think it was.

Since when do snipers do head shots...?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Thai_Army#Equipment

The general Thailand bolt action sniper rifle is listed as the SIG-Sauer SSG 300; which shots the famous 7.62x51mm NATO.

They also have the SR-25 which also fires the 7.62x51mm NATO.

I'll give it a try when it is released, but if my mechanized infantry can be wiped out by an enemy charioteer I swear I'll never play a Sid Meier game ever again.

Mosquito Shot Down By a Laser

Right to dissent was suspended at G20 Pittsburgh

NordlichReiter says...

I know its crazy and kinda sick, but I would like to see em when they are all standing there big and smug in their stupid umpire uniforms.

Then some dudes roll up with a catapult and launch a dead cow at them! Splatter!

Then the infantry moves in with pikes and shields. The cavalry roles up from the left flank and a hail of arrows comes down on them from the right flank!

Mean while back in reality some protester is getting his ass beat down behind a wall of dipshits in shinguards.

Awesome!!! Armadillo Aerospace's 2009 Lunar Lander Entry

Northrop Grumman? Why do we need a military contractor landing on the moon? There can be only one answer; the first lunar war is coming. I can only assume that NASA has discovered life on the surface. I, for one, would gladly serve in the 1st hopping infantry in our glorious struggle against the moon beasts.

Few realize that Afghanistan is near a paradise, very beautiful country. I remember travel author Bruce Chatwin raving about it. I hope they stumble into some semblance of peace - at least long enough so I can visit there before I get too old because I really want to.
3/4 of the beauty of this piece is the fact that no music is being rammed down your throat. Makes you feel like you're there and I wish more vid makers didn't feel the need to "enhance", (read: "Mask"), their work with so much music.
Also, at 2:55 isn't that a girl soldier?

I can imagine that Afghanistan is very beautiful. Some of my friends said they've seen beauty there with their own eyes, having gone over and come back.

The woman at 2:55 looks like a medic to me, although that's partly a hunch based on her backpack. 2:26 / 3:57's a woman too and so does 1:08 appear to be (hair's in a bun, looks like). Women in the Canadian Forces can be in any trade, including the combat arms, and I have a few women friends who've done tours there, most of them as infantry, i.e., foot soldiers.

Thank you for the promote and the lyric. It's much appreciated.

there was a decorated general with
a heart of gold, that likened him to
all the stories he told
of past battles, won and lost, and
legends of old a seasoned veteran in
his own time

on the battlefield, he gained
respectful fame with many medals
of bravery and stripes to his name
he grew a beard as soon as he could
to cover the scars on his face
and always urged his men on

but on the eve of a great battle
with the infantry in dream
the old general tossed in his sleep
and wrestled with its meaning
he awoke from the night
just to tell what he had seen
and walked slowly out of his tent

all the men held tall with their
chests in the air, with courage in
their blood and a fire in their stare
it was a grey morning and they all
wondered how they would fare
till the old general told them to go home

[CHORUS:]
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going

Take a shower, shine your shoes
you got no time to lose
you are young men you must be living
go now you are forgiven

but the men stood fast with their
guns on their shoulders not knowing
what to do with the contradicting orders
the general said he would do his own
duty bout would not extend it not further
the men could go as they pleased

but not a man moved, their eyes gazed straight ahead
till one by one
they stepped back and not a word was said
and the old general was left with his
own words echoing in his head
he then prepared to fight

[CHORUS]

go now you are forgiven
