Viral How Much Did Your Divorce Cost

newtboy says...

So weird seeing people disagree with you and offering various examples of marriages that contradict your blanket statements and then you go off spouting shit about subjective pitfalls some minority still experience after being married as if those outcomes are the only possible outcomes or even the norm.
What you two mean to say is DIVORCE is win win for the woman and lose lose for the man, still dead wrong but at least it's the point you two are trying to make.

Objectively, by the numbers, in terms of who benefits if the marriage ends, it's neither in no fault states.

It's asinine of you two to assume the man always has more assets, and more earning power. It's maybe true on average but it's trending away from that, and it's absolutely not in every instance.

My brother won. He got full custody and child support. No alimony for either. In Texas, a non no fault state where the woman is assumed to be the primary child raising parent.

Really, you still think most women don't work? Are you still living in the 1960's? My wife works, has since before we met in 92. I retired in early 2000's. If we divorced, I would get alimony.

I've known plenty of women who lost in marriage, not sure where you come up with that, and for over 1/2 the population, divorce is 50/50 split of marital assets, no winner.

It's only men in fault states who caused the dissolution of the marriage or don't fight for custody that get screwed as you describe. Most of us tossed out the system you describe decades ago. Most of us understand that while women still get paid less for the same work, that's no guarantee she makes less than her husband. As for "marrying up".... plenty of men do that too. Even if your significant other is a homemaker, they contribute enormously to the marriage, at one point they determined the jobs a homemaker does would cost over $80 K per year if you hired people.

With your opinion about women and marriage, I doubt you need to worry about the kind of woman who would marry you. The ones who accept the outdated misogynistic patriarchal mindset you show aren't the ones with much to offer, the desperate and insecure who will take whoever accepts them. They might resemble the women in your descriptions. Treat women better and you'll attract better women.

What makes you think you are some prize that only a near perfect woman would be acceptable to? It sure sounds like you're alone now. How is making the perfect the enemy of the great working for you?

Again, many states have changed the law to no fault, 50/50 splits with no prenup. Hard to be more fair. You complain about issues most Americans evolved out of.

"Most Armed Man in America" on guns

No single terror attack in US by countries on Trump ban list

enoch says...

@bcglorf
you left out that anwar had worked for the CIA and NSC as a consultant, and that in his earlier days as an imam was critical of al qeada and was very pro-american.

look,i am not arguing the fact that anwar did become radicalized, nor am i denying that his shift in attitudes (which was mainly due to americas handling of the iraqi war) had become not only critical, but had gone from condemnation to calls for violence, and praise for violence.

which brings us to the fort hood shooter nidel hasan who was an avid fan of anwar al awlaki, and DID have a correspondence with awlaki.which when examined, was pretty fucking one sided.it was apparent that hasan was attempting to get in the good graces of awlaki who, evidenced by the email correspondence, had no real relationship with hasan.though awlaki did praise hasan, and his violent actions.

so i do not get where 'the emails are closed".just google nidal hasan and anwar al awlaki emails, and you can go read for yourself.

and as for these emails as justification..i really do not see your logic in this respect.

so if someone becomes a huge fan of mine, and emails me constantly because we met ONCE and now they think we are buddies and share common interests (which, maybe we do),and that person perpetrates a violent act.

am i responsible for that act?

and here is where the crux of the discussion REALLY is:
maybe i AM responsible.
maybe i am guilty of inciting violence.
maybe i should be held accountable, because not only did i keep this mans violent intentions to myself, which resulted in death, but then praised his actions afterwards as being the will of god.

there are ALL possibilities, and they are valid questions.
they are legal questions, and maybe there should be a legal accountability.

should the proper pathway to a legal conclusion be:
a.a remotely piloted drone that targets my phone and launches a missile murdering (assasinating0 me,along with innocent by-standers?

or.

b.working with the yemeni government to bring me into a secure facility to be questioned, and possibly charged with inciting violence and prosecuted in an international court of law?

do you see what i'm saying?

the question isn't if anwar al awlaki,as a prominent imam, was vocally against american foreign policy,or that he openly supported violence in the form of terrorism.

the question is:
how do you address that situation, and prosecute the legalities?

because as scahill posited:how do you surrender to a drone?

could anwar al awlaki be guilty of EVERY charge the US accused him of?
quite possibly.
but we will never know because he was assassinated,as was his 16yr old son.

even your counter argument is speculation based on loose affiliations, and tenuous connections.

you will NEVER be able to supply a concrete, and verifiable accounting of anwar al awlaki's guilt, because you CAN'T..he was assassinated.

and THAT is the point.

now let us take this a step further.
let us examine how this can be abused, and watching trump consolidate executive power by surrounding himself with departmental loyalist, loyal only to him,we can begin to see the beginnings of trumps "soft fascism".

now lets take how you made your argument, and supplant a different scenario, but using the same parameters.

do you SEE how easily the drone program could be used to quickly, and efficiently remove opposing political players from the board? dissenting and opposing voices simply painted as violent enemies of the state that were in need of removal, because of the "possibility" that they may one day actually incite or cause violence?

the state can now murder a person for simply what they say,or write but NOT what they actually DO.

anwar al awlaki didn't actually kill anyone, didn't perpetrate any acts of violence.he simply talked about the evils of american empire, the mishandling of the iraq war (which he was originally in support of) and praised those who DID engage in violent acts of terror as doing the work of god.

should he have been held accountable in some fashion?
i think there is case to be made in that regard, but instead of going through proper channels, and adhering to the protocols of international law,he was outright assassinated.

and just how easily this can be abused is incredibly frightening.

again,i understand we approach things from different angles, but you have to see the danger in this practice, and how easily it can be misused to much darker and sinister purposes.

"well,he said nasty things about us and had a lot of friends who were on the terror watch list"

is simply NOT a valid enough excuse to simply murder someone.

there are protocols and legal procedure for a REASON,and anwar al awlaki may certainly have been in breach of international law and therefor possibly SHOULD have been prosecuted under those terms.

but we will NEVER know, because he was killed.
by an american president.
a nobel peace prize winner and constitutional law professor.

anwar al awlaki was an american citizen, his SON was an american citizen, but due to those abominations:MCA of 2006 and the NDAA of 2012.obama had the power and authority to assassinate them both.

where was there right to face their accuser?
habeas corpus..gone...a legal right that dates back to 1205 a.d by the BRITISH..gone.
innocent until proven guilty....gone.
the right to provide evidence in your defense...gone.

all the president has to do..and DID in this case,is deem you an "enemy combatant" and BOOM..dead.

i really hope you reconsider your attitude in this case my friend, because this shit is fascism incarnate, and now trump has his chubby little fingers on the "fire" button.

god help us all......

Yowza! That wasn't MY experience landing in Auckland from Australia during Little Feat's April 2001 tour. They pulled out ALL the stops from dogs to a selected body search [one of the techs was detained because his glasses case smelled of marijuana!] The St. James Theater and the people we met there were delightful however and the country is absolutely stunning. I'd go back in a heartbeat [after fumigating my clothes and belongings of course] =o)

Peter: You were my first best friend. We met in third grade and were unbreakable until freshman year when our lives went in different ways. We played Atari for days. We hiked the woods and made up adventures. We made abet on who would kiss a girl first. You won. You are such a deep part of who I am. I will miss you.

We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808)!

Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum

Trout says...

Ah, one of the all-time great singles of the rock era. So mature, yet it was their first single. I envy those hearing this for the first time (and they're just kids in this video... kids!). One of Paul McCartney's favorite songs:

McCartney: "It's got to be "A Whiter Shade of Pale." The first time I ever heard it was the night I met Linda. We met at the Bag O' Nails, and we went on to the Speakeasy, and they played the record of it there. We were with Keith Moon of the Who and Eric Burdon of the Animals, and we were all trying to figure out who it was. We all thought it must be Stevie Winwood, but it turned out to be Procol Harum. We just said, 'This is the best song ever, man.'"

Humans Need Not Apply

newtboy says...

I wrote an interesting paper in college (got an A) about the 'fallacy of the intrinsic value of human life', which in short said because 'value' is a capitalism term derived from a demand/supply function where any ratio <1 lowers value and anything below a certain point makes the 'value' a negative, or said another way when the supply becomes so much greater than the demand, having more of the thing has a negative value (costs more than it's 'worth'), and we met that criteria for humans at least 4 billion people ago, if not far more than that, in my opinion. (I understand I'm not normal) That's not to say there isn't potential value, just that there's a 'glut' in the 'market' so bad that more people have no current positive 'value'.
(It's all an exercise to point out that using economics terms for people (or other things with 'intrinsic value') doesn't work in the way expected)

brycewi19 said:

There is no such thing as a useless person.

I don't see how everyone else let this comment slip.

Less "use" for humans doesn't mean less humans. People are not a use-based entity. But perhaps that's simply my value system.

What this potentially all means is massive pain and poverty to intrinsically valuable human life, not useless people.

Also, there will always be a need for human to human care, empathy, and love. Something a bot would never be able to do that would be acceptable by a person.

Robin Williams: Mind Altering Experience

Sagemind says...

I met Robin, several years back while they he was filming Jumanchi.
He was filming in my neighborhood, all filmed a block from my house.

But I met him in line a my local comic shop. He was there buying some action figures. He told me about how he tried to come into the store the day before but was mobbed in the street. He'd been looking for these specific action figures for a while and had tracked them down and had them on hold. (Wild Cats from McFarlane toys)

I was standing beside him for a bit before I even knew who he was. I remember thinking he was shorter than I'd expected. He was nice, collected and smiled as we chatted in the line to pay for our stuff. I didn't overwhelm him with questions or treat him like a celebrity. Just chatted in line like I would with anyone else.

He finished paying for his purchases and left the store. He was immediately met by body guards. who took his purchases and quickly disappeared (out of the way) as he walked up the street with his Publicist.

It was just a casual meeting. but somehow I always wanted to meet him again, so I could say, remember when we met in the comic store. I supose that will never happen now, though, it may never have happened any way.

Sorry to see such a genius mind leave us. I hope he's found his peace.

Classic Karmann Ghia Commercial

lurgee says...

Truth!

When I was born back in '65, my father had a two toned Karmann Ghia. Black with a white roof. He said I always called it "Daddy's race car". He would always chuckle after telling me that but back then and I had no clue why. It broke my heart the day he sold it. We were a family of five then and 4 more were yet to come. He bought a new '67 Bus to haul the family and a used Beetle for him to go to his job.

About ten years ago I went to a Bug Out with a friend who had a '72 Beetle. We met up with a group of air cooled VW's known as the Slow Riders. One of them had a red 70's Ghia. I could not stop taking pictures of it. It is definitely one sexy German car.

Good to hear that you hooked up the Ghia with some extra horses.

Twitter Rape Victim Punished

Hive13 says...

Listen, I am not trying to take anything away from this girl or the situation at all, but she was 17 years old, at a party, drinking to black-out drunk levels and got in a bad situation.

Why was she there at all? Where are her parents? They should be just as guilty as anyone.

Rape sucks. My wife was date raped before we met so I am not making light of it. I say this with all due respect for rape victims out there. People hear or read the word rape and picture Jodie Foster in The Accused every time. Legally, rape at the core level means "sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse, which is initiated by one or more persons against another person without that person's consent." -Wikipedia. Here's the issue. If she is black out drunk (which she was), she could have easily offered consent willingly and later not been able to recall consenting in the first place, therefore placing the boys in serious trouble. Them pleading guilty was probably their lawyer's work, pleading guilty ends the case and seals the charges in juvenile record as they were not tried as adults. Now, I am not saying that happened here, but it is possible.

They are assholes for taking advantage of the situation and especially for taking pictures and spreading them around school. I am glad they were found guilty and they absolutely deserve it. We'll never know what their punishment was and I am quite sure it wasn't enough for this girl or her family, nor would any remotely realistic punishment be enough, honestly. The judge tried them, they were found guilty and punished according to the judge's application of the law. Case closed.

Her tweeting their names and violating the court order was stupid, but I am glad they didn't seek to punish her further for it, she's clearly been through enough.

All that being said, these hack-job video "hosts" are just making it worse for everyone, especially this girl whom I sure would rather have it all behind her instead of cramming it down everyone's throat like this morons did.

Hey there!

I hope that the truly bizarre welcome you got to the sift doesn't put you off, it's a great place for discussion.

I'm from way down south of Oz in Melbourne, but I've been to Byron Bay for a wedding, and it's a lovely place.

HI there, thought I'd introduce myself. It's my first week anniversary sifting here ... I see you are from Australia. I had a chance to visit during a whirlwind tour back in 2001 [My friends were headlining the Byron Bay Blues Festival that year, so I got to tag along] ... didn't get to spend NEARLY enough time in your country, but was impressed with how beautiful it is and how GREAT the people we met are. I hope I can go back some day, it was absolutely one of the most memorable trips I've ever embarked on, HoyHoy

Thanks! It was a bizarre introduction to the site, but hey, who doesn't like a bit of drama [when it's warranted that is]. I really enjoy it here [now] =oD

The band played the Mercury Lounge in Melbourne and the Metro in Sydney before popping over the Auckland for a show at the St. James Theater. It went by so fast! I really wish we'd had longer than ten days down under. My favorite little town was Nimbin in NSW ... my kind of people!
