How to show that horoscopes are bunk - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Doesn't the people who write the daily horoscopes claim to adhere to the system and method of astrology? How can you say they don't?

Because astrology looks at individual birth dates and horoscopes lump together a whole months worth of people's birthday's into one. Not saying that astrology isn't crap, although from stuff i've read i'm inclined to buy into a lot of it. But clearly if you are being that unspecific about something - as horoscopes undoubtedly are - then you'd be a dumbass to take it on board.

Think you need to change the title to horoscopes and not astrology, just cos that IS what he's talking about

14 Year Old Republican Addresses CPAC

Flood says...

The four principles of conservatism he outlines are:

1. Respect for the constitution
2. Respect for life
3. Less government
4. Personal responsibility

It seems to me that most people would agree that those principles are good ones, regardless of political party. But like a Rorschach inkblot test, these principles elicit different ideas in different people.

For example, take the second principle "Respect for life". One person might think that means that birth control or abortion is wrong, but preemtively going to war is okay. Another person might think that going to war and invading another country is wrong, but think birth control and some forms of abortion are okay. In today's political climate one person is labeled as "conservative" while the other isn't. And yet, from both individual's point of view, they are adhering to the principles.

These principles are like a daily horoscope. Read any one of the twelve horoscopes and it will feel like it applies to you because the message is so generic. Read those four principles and perhaps only #3 will alienate a few. There is no substance in these principles, but the republican party adds its own definitions that gives those principles their real meaning, and it is those definitions that I don't agree with 50% of the time.

You might as well say your core principle is "do no evil". Who could disagree with that? No one of course. Only deranged people actually knowingly do stuff that they consider evil, everyone else is doing what they think is right given the circumstances. But "evil" is committed anyways because people have different definitions on what "evil" is. To some, birth control is "evil", to others, war is "evil".

Wrapping this up. This core he speaks of is trash. Who cares about these principles that make up your core. They are meaningless without a set of definitions that give the core meaning.

Only 14 and already a master of saying a lot without saying anything.

classic astrology at the very least has an actual system, a method, to it that dates back atleast to the sumerians. newspaper horoscopes are just "blah blah blah" and date back to when newspapers got stupid.

I agree that it's a poor scientific experiment; it's not supposed to be. This experiment is more of an argument against astrology to use with people who have no regard for rationality and reality.

In what way does daily horoscopes differ from classical astrology, by the way? Is classical astrology any less ludicrous?

HadouKen24 says...

This is a very poor experiment to disprove astrology. The daily horoscope has almost nothing to do with classical astrology. It didn't even exist until 1930, while astrology has been around for thousands and thousands of years.

I'm not saying that astrology works. Much better tests have been run which show that it doesn't--tests that don't rely on newspaper astrology. But what Tyson advocates here isn't good science.

IT'S A TRAP!

Those "give us your cell phone number" ads are not from the real company. They are fake, they are exactly like those "hot sexy chat and horoscope readings"

You are signing up for a continuous barrage of non-stop pay-to-recieve text messages charged to your cell bill like a call to a 900 number. It's a scam. Like those "Male Enlargement Pills" tv ads that are being prosecuted down in the States right now.

>> Correlation is not causation, however it is relevant. Guns can act as a deterrent to any kind of crime because a criminal who knows he is surrounded by armed civilians is deterred just as much as a criminal who is surrounded by cops. This is why you need to look at overall statistics, not just gun-related incidents. If restricting guns just causes people to murder with knives instead, it hasn't accomplished anything.
The school shootings are a red herring because they account for a minuscule portion of the overall murder rate but 99% of the media coverage. Media have deceived you, and you need to go look at actual statistics.

Sorry, but i disagree. You're comparing two completely different things and drawing a conclusion from it. And, i might add, completely ignoring other more pressing factors that i quoted for you. I have already stated other reasons for increased violent crime in the UK but they appear to have been discarded "because a criminal who knows he is surrounded by armed civilians is deterred just as much as a criminal who is surrounded by cops." - which is a completely arbitrary statement and is unprovable by statistics or trials.. it is FAR too situational and personal to make a bold statement like that and call it fact.

As jonny has already said before me, i think some of what you're saying has the merit of looking factual and reasonable when in fact it isn't, so i'm not gonna say much more here.

I hope my posts remind people to think for themselves, and not just "go through the motions" as they say.

Eg.
" * As of 1998, no permit holder has ever shot a police officer. There have been several cases in which a permit holder has protected an officer's life. (7)"
" * 221,443 concealed carry licenses were issued in Florida between October of 1987 and April of 1994. During that time, Florida recorded 18 crimes committed by licensees with firearms. (15)"
" * As of 1998, nationwide, there has been 1 recorded incident in which a permit holder shot someone following a traffic accident. The permit holder was not charged, as the grand jury ruled the shooting was in self defense. (7)"

-- all of these quotes are, in effect, saying that by and large, people who obey laws (to carry weapons) don't break the law (to shoot the weapons illegally).

THIS JUST IN - PEOPLE WHO OBEY THE LAW OBEY THE LAW!

That's what i mean by stuff that looks reasoned and intelligent when actually it's not. It's the same thing as horoscope writers do, imo. So i bow out now. I know people who like lax gun laws will think i'm an idiot who can't understand basic facts and statistics, and i know that people who dislike gun laws will see exactly what i'm talking about. Hopefully people who aren't sure will see through the illusion of 'facts'. (Say that to rhyme with "farce"!")

They also added that post Google.

All those services wanted people to come to their bloated pages so you could check your horoscope, get yahoo mail, read their news and so on. They didn't purify their search experience like Google did. Search is it's priority, the rest of the services are added on the users demand not the companies. This is the reverse with the others.

anti-gay protestor vs. fox news "bimbo"

Catalyst says...

Fox News! It's not news. It's the Fox Show dressed as news. The reporter is another one of the well trained Fox Show hosts.

The religious woman is like many bible people. You can take most parts of the bible and make it mean what you want; just like horoscopes.

Both of these people i.e. the Fox Show hostes and the religious woman were to loud to hear what either were trying to say. In the end, both said nothing.
