Got HiDef? (Blog Entry by lucky760)

How Plasma TVs are made.

charliem says...

I got a 50" plasma HDTV recently.
Spent about 3 hours in the store, getting the guy to put all the screens next to one another, put all the settings to the same, and had them all play dvd, blu ray, normal tv, and digital tv...plasma is superior in almost every way to lcd's.

The only downside is the reflection on the panel, LCD's dont have that...but it shouldnt be an issue if you light the room right.

Plasma TVs can definitely display more than 1 million colors.
I think this video might be a few years old.

If anybody is looking for an HDTV I say go for the Plasma. They almost always have a better picture quality than LCD TVs and much higher contrast.
Old Plasma TVs used to have some problems like burn in, but the new ones are not supposed to have any problems like that anymore.

This is quite interesting, but to those of you looking for a TV, I highly suggest you look at something other than plasma.

In the video, they say that plasma tvs display 1 million colors. This is nothing. 32 bit color (the highest available, which has been standard for years on computer monitors and should be on HDTVS, and is different from say 64 bit processing ala the N64) is 24 million colors.

Get an HDTV.

I Has a New 'Puter! : D (Blog Entry by dotdude)

I has an (new to me) old computer!
I had a used 400mhz G3 iMac, now a used 733mhz G4 tower. WhooHoo!
I shoved the hard drive and 1gb ram from the iMac into it and viola`!
No loss of operating system, applications or data!
I did replace the video card ($10 + Airport card I didn't want)
I turned away the CinemaDisplay!
(Incompatable with everything BUT that particular old videocard.)
It's like Naomi Campbell. It's beautiful, but you don't want it in your house.
I have a 20" widescreen Magnavox monitor/DVD player/HDTV.
I'll upgrade THAT to a 42" eventually.

Congrats on your NEW new Mac!
(Beautiful screen, and no HDMI or S video **INPUTS**?!?)
((Yes, there are USB Video input solutions, but it's a workaround
for a deficient design.))

The Price Is Right - Worst.Bid.Ever

Bidouleroux - I have to say that it is indeed you that has a totally bogus argument. Electrical signals in wires and water flowing though a pipe do not operate on the same principle.

With water, like with telecom and power systems, a single infrastructure is the only practical solution. However, different water providers operating on the same grid can not work because while people may pay differing amounts for water of varying quality, when mixed in a pipe, every gets the same quality water in the end and you no longer got what you paid for. If you neighbor is poor and can only afford water with fecal matter in it, guess what, you are getting fecal matter too. If you have HDTV and your neighbor doesn't, the fact that his/her cable signal is passing along the same wire as yours doesn't not diminish the quality of either signal.

At the same time, the free-market is a fine solution when the item in question is not necessary for the basic survival of a human being! We can all survive without a telephone, internet, cable tv and even electricity. People did for thousands of years. People can not survive with access to clean drinking water. Hence, something like water, that must be of a high quality, must always be publicly owned and administered in order for the public to ensure its quality and access. It's not a monopoly if the "mono" in question is everyone.

As a teacher of economics, I find the the free-market to be the most misunderstood and widely misused idea I have ever come across. Like I said before, it is a fine solution when the item in question is not necessary for the basic survival of a human being. The result of not understanding such limits of the free-market will ultimately cause the disastrous application of it to situations like that in Bolivia and dozens of other nations. The free-market is a tool, and like any tool, it is not the best solution for every problem.

Fixing offscreen windows (Blog Entry by winkler1)

Personality I don't care too much about Dinesh, although his community does spill over onto my blog. I recently felt inclined to help people learn about the theory of evolution.

Although I tend to blog a lot about politics, My AOL blog is for Current events, news, culture, science, religion, activism, environment, war..you name it.

The problem I've been having is that after nine months sans TayTV I've forgotten what type of videos I'm looking for and I've forgotten how to present them to an audience. The Neo-con commentary is only a small portion of my daily problems with this blog. I find myself censoring my posts to avoid mass hysteria and a trip to an American gulag (yes, i've been threatened with that.)

I remember when people asked why I started the video blog I would say "You can do a lot more with 30 minutes on the internet, then you can spending 30 minutes in front of a TV."

No matter how low they price the next HDTV the younger generation has abandoned TV, viewership worldwide has already started to decline, people don't want to spend a third of their down time watching programmed television commercials. I've felt we can be doing more productive things with our time. This consumer culture I grew up in is out of control and the internet feels like the right place to start fixing it.

I remember when people asked what I planned to get out of TayTV I would say, "the opportunity to work online, so that I never have to return for another shift at my day job" - The labour I put into online video sharing, possibly combined with my lunacy, landed me this golden opportunity quicker then I expected. However I may have squandered it. Which is why I have come out and started this blog topic. If I'm to fix this I will need help of the sift, which I will only accept after it is thoroughly discussed and we find a way for the Sift to benefit and grow from this experience.

What do you want or what are you giving for Christmas? Gift Ideas Accepted Here (Blog Entry by lucky760)

blankfist says...

Wow, 42 must be the magic number this year, for sure. I looked at a 50", but the darn thing was only 768 resolution, and I wanted 1080p. Also, Vizio seems to be the deal of the century for 42" HDTVs right now, too, becuase I picked mine up for 900 bucks. Way cheap. And, I found a true 1080p HD-DVD player for only $260 - usually they're 400.

BTW, I figured out what I have to get my girlfriend for x-mas. She's been wanting to go on a vacation for so long, and, to be honest, she works incredibly hard on an incredibly demanding account, so she deserves a break. In any event, we're going on vacation this week. Unenthusiastic yay. She's paying for half, though, which will be my gift. Yes, you heard it right. The vacation she wanted, she's paying half of it and making that my gift. I don't mind, though. It'll be fun. We were going to go to San Fran, but I think we're now going to Santa Ynez for some wine tasting. BridleWood and Matei's Tavern here I come!

there's what I'd like to give and then there's what I will be giving... I'd like to give Soupskin a glock and a 42" plasma HDTV and I'd like to get my second son horseback lessons and I'd like to give my eldest a trip to Europe and I'd like to recieve a gift certificate to Amazon.com and I'd like to give third son a new computer for gaming and I'd like to give the family an Xbox and a PS3

BUT......
I'll probably get a few things at Target for the boys; some DVDs, some games and maybe (if there's money left over) I'll get them some neat Gir shirts from Hot Topic. If there's money left over, maybe I'll get myself a graphic novel or two. I'm not saying what I'm getting Soupskin (since he reads the site) but it is nothing near as cool as a glock or HDTV.
