The world's most beautiful sustainable font

spawnflagger says...

I'd hate to burst his bubble, but this "eco" mode could be done (maybe it is already?) programmatically for ALL FONTS.

And words already take up very small percentage of coverage on your average sheet of paper. So saving 33% of 5% isn't that much.

Yes, it's an artistic font, but you do much more to save the planet by buying hax0red printers with huge user-refillable ink storage.

'Accidental' Download Sending Guy To Prison

Jaace says...

This whole news story sounds like a bait and switch tactic that the FBI put out to either scare people or bring people in who've downloaded illegal content...not necessarily child pornography. Just like Max stated above; you think they'll just forgive all the other haX0red applications/games/music/movies you ALSO happen to have (because come on, everyone does) on your computer?

The FBI has also employed a "honey pot" scheme to entrap individuals into child porn, etc. It just really seems like they are a lazy bunch of assholes who don't know how to do any real work.

Although...I'm sure the only morons that would willingly bring their computers to the police and have them confiscate it for weeks are the very same people who DON'T download illegal software, etc. because they don't know how.

DEBKA reports cyber jihad beginning 11-11-07 (Waronterror Talk Post)

raven says...

Hmmm... I don't know Doc... given that these warnings come from MEMRI & DEBKA, I think they should be taken with a large grain of salt, those organizations are just about as biased as any founded by former Israeli intelligence agents can be... and DEBKA, is itself run by and fed information by members of the Israeli military... their material is interesting certainly, but oftentimes not much more than unfounded rumors.

That whole strategy outlined (the second one, about participating in US based forums) seems aimed to only discredit any sort of anti-Bush or anti-war discourse that takes place on the interwebs... sowing the seeds of doubt if you will, planting in your mind the question that perhaps that genuine American who is upset with the way their country is being run is actually a jihadi... frankly I wouldn't listen to them, polls taken within this country by creditable organizations suggest that there is already enough genuine dissent by real citizens that any concerted efforts by al-Qaeda to spread dissent anonymously on internet forums would be kind of pointless.

As for the first part, the declaration of a digital jihad, well, we shall see what happens on Nov. 11th, as I'm not totally conviced that al-Qaeda is comprised of L33t HaX0rs... in fact, I'm fairly certain that up until this point they haven't really operated in such capacity... but who knows, there is a first time for everything.

As much as it's fun to blame the hax0rs, it's our server- we will do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again. The good news is that I think that the vast majority of our members are very cluey and would have patched, up to date systems. ;-)

"Training" video for motocross (thongs NSFW)

Or perhaps, "exploited a race condition". That's my sweetie, leet hax0r *and* purveyor of fine feather headdresses.

What's a race condition? Let's look at a real world example, counting attendees at the ballpark.

This ballpark has several entrances, each with a single person counting people as they walk in. Each of those counters has a little handheld computer with a button. The computers are connected wirelessly to a central machine that keeps track of the total for all entrances.

(Did you wonder about counting the people who leave? Congratulations, you get a cookie! We'll skip that, just to keep things simple.)

Ready to write bad counting software now? Whoo, me too! ...the good times just never stop around here. ;-)

So, the central computer can do two things:

1: report on the total number of attendees
2: set the new total number to whatever we say

Each wireless clicker can do just one thing:

1: Ask the central computer for the total number of attendees, add one, and report the new number back

What's the problem? Well, there's a small lag time between when the clicker asks for the total, and when the new total gets back to the central computer.

TWO COUNTERS ENTER, ONLY ONE WILL LEAVE!

Alfred and Bettie both click at the exact same instant
Alfred and Bettie both learn that there are 999 total attendees
Alfred adds one and reports that there are now 1000 total attendees.
Bettie adds one and reports that there are now 1000 total attendees, too.

Whoops? There should be 1001 total attendees, not 1000. We lost one.

Because this is a bug brought on by time, or by when things happen, it's called a "race condition", that is, when two processes run at the same time and assume that nothing will change behind their back.

Mac spoof for gaming

Have you spent much time on a mac lately tedbater? For me, it's a nice blend of form and function. I have a terminal type unixy backend, I can use the vi editor, perl and other hax0r goodies and still have lovely Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. The interface is very intuitive, it remembers stuff, and switches nicely between all my apps. I find that I'm about 30% more productive on my Mac.

I think that Macs are good for people who want to "make" stuff.
