The Molecular Shape of You (Ed Sheeran Parody)

eric3579 says...

You should check out his other songs. Most i'm guessing you will know. They are all amazingly well done. I'm surprised more people don't love his stuff. Here are my faves.

That was impressive.
I don't know the original song but that was a brand new experience.

I was blown away with how he kept all the other sounds going in the corners.

The Public gives Jimmy What for on Climate Crisis

ChaosEngine says...

Regarding the last point around Einstein vs 97%.

He is absolutely right about that. If you are right, then it doesn't matter how many scientists are against you, as long as the evidence supports your theory.

Which in Einsteins case, it did (and still does nearly a century later... yay gravitational waves!).

Unfortunately, the problem here is that the evidence OVERWHELMING supports AGW. So, if you're going to disagree with that, you better a) be an expert in your field and b) have some pretty compelling evidence to support you.

What's that? The people who object to climate change don't actually understand the science and haven't got a shred of evidence to back up their nonsense? Quelle surprise....

Gravitational waves - the cosmic chirp

lucky760 says...

Thank goodness for this video's explanation. I kept wondering how they detected the gravitational waves and no stories explained it. The animation here was great.

Now I just wonder how they know so certainly that it was *that* 1-billion-year-old black hole collision that they detected.

Great stuff. *promote

"Father of Inflation" Professor SURPRISED w/ New Discovery

rich_magnet says...

"It's five sigma at point two". Now I know how to impress physicist chicks.

In actuality, I'm reeling at this discovery. Finally, solid evidence of gravitational waves and basically staring at the Big Bang. Astrophysics is advancing so fast these days.

I'd rather there be a creator, there be an intention for this universe to exist specifically to evolve and house life. I dont subscribe to any Earth religions though. There in fact does have to be a WHY... I belive cosmology, probing the big bang, will get us eternally closer to an answer. The cosmic microwave background is a last scattering surface for electromagnetic energy, but it is transparent to gravitational energy. Cosmologists/physicists are attempting to map the earliest universe with gravitational waves next. I hope it works and they can take our understanding further with it.

There has to be a "how", there most certainly does not need to be a "why". You only need a "why" if you can't subscribe to life having no purpose, that was it just random chance and there is no ulterior motive for its existence. Which is fine, you don't need to subscribe to that but there it is, no "why"

IQ Disparity with Brian Cox

charliem says...

Hes trying to explain that gravitational waves have the same effect on space-time, as sound-waves have on a gas / fluid.

Ala, compression and rarefraction at the peaks and troughs of the gravity wave, physically warp space-time as the wave transverses the fabric.

The tradional model of a wave that we all know and love (co/sin) isnt the best one to describe it, you really need to picture gravity waves as longitudinal waves, not transverse.

How the Gravitational Wave Observatory Works

silvercord says...

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory is spearheading the completely new field of gravitational wave astronomy and opening a whole new window on the universe. LIGO's exquisitely sensitive instruments may ultimately take us farther back in time than we've ever been, catching, perhaps, the first murmurs of the universe in formation.
