The Antares rocket exploding at liftoff

visionep says...

Did you forget the sarcasm flag? This launch was from a free market private company that NASA had contracted with.

Here's some more info about what a free market company did to cut corners and lower their bids attempting to provide this service to NASA.

Dear NASA,
You would've never lasted this long in a free market/competitive environment. Please just stop. You're wasting valuable talent, people, and money.

Volcanic Eruption of Mount Tavurvur (shock wave included)

oritteropo says...

The volcano is here - https://goo.gl/maps/LbKHf

They appear to be somewhere in the middle of the bay, which makes it about 4km (?) away. If you assume (like the yt commenters did) that the shockwave slowed to the speed of sound almost instantly you would calculate a distance of approx 4-4.5kms which would have them almost on the opposite shoreline (or even on land) which they clearly are not...

p.s. Yes I realise that a supersonic shockwave should cause you to underestimate rather than overestimate distances, perhaps they're really a bit further from Rabul than I assumed?

p.p.s They were staying at Kokopo Beach Bungalows, and went out on the boat for a better look.

I went with speed of sound. Any idea how to figure it?

-edit-
Removed my attempt at figuring the distance for a more interesting video of the volcano erupting

Cute kids impersonate birds

This was from Chebeague Island School in Maine, U.S.A, https://goo.gl/maps/cRbI8

Mrs Hoidal's Kindergarten - 2nd Grade students made a movie about the birds they studied the last month (before 11th of April).

From youtube comment from Beverly Johnson:

The students painted their masks and made sculptures of their birds with the help of teaching assistants Marty Trower and David Bing. They also invited their family and friends for the movie opening where they sang and shared their ever improving bird calls. Laura Summa made bird cookies to go along with the tea reception following. http://www.chebeague.org/school/2014/k2birds/index.html

Law Student Prevails Over State Robot Thug

artician says...

I stop to think about things all the time.

What he's representing and what it represents to the passerby are worlds apart. In this case, he's clearly in a neighborhood where the average citizen sees the police as a protection against a non-uniformed man with a gun, rather than an activist or educated individual upholding their rights.

Gather several hundred open-carriers and visit capitol hill, or go to the nearest politician-laden golf resort with your assault rifle. Don't march up and down neighborhoods (http://goo.gl/5lhLnG) looking for trouble.

From the mostly-benign situations such as this, to the people who've had their fill of shit and gun down a crowd of innocents: making openly aggressive statements in this way is addressing the wrong audience. This is not the way to make the point.

Lastly, even though I agree with you, you can't tell me I'm lumping someone into a perceived fairy land when you title videos "Student Prevails Over State Robot Thug".

Artician-Ever stop to think about what his parading-around represents in this instance? You are lumping-him into some imaginary fairly-land of your own perception, one where only who carries guns?? He's doing this for a fucking reason man...
