Have you tried explaining to her what fascism is?

Fourteen Defining
Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Source Free Inquiry.co
5-28-3

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

9. Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Sesame Street Pulls Controversial Katy Perry Duet with Elmo

peggedbea says...

as a raging feminist and a mother,.... i gotta disagree.

my kids grew out of the sesame street days years ago, and now are mortified of viewing or duplicating anything remotely attached to sesame street.

are little girls over sexualized in/by pop culture? yes
is it because they saw a pop stars cleavage on sesame street one time when they were 2? probably not.

do i think the same sample of parents will let their little girls idolize vapid, packaged, subtly sexualized and marketed teenage pop stars later in their lives? yes.
and let their little boys form a skewed idea of women and sexuality built around pop culture iconography and too much internet porn? yes.

Your point is my point exactly! Our culture is constantly filled with scantily clad females.
As soon as you change the channel you'll find a girl in a bikini is selling you some crap.
So in our hypersexualized marketing culture it's not a cop out to suggest that we promote modest behavior and select role models for young kids who practice modesty.
By obstinately defending Perry's right to show the top of her tits..
You're all missing the point completely.
And essentially condoning someone like Kesha teaching 3 to 7 yr olds their numbers and alphabet by rewording her song about binge drinking and causal drunk sex.
Some of these kids are going to become attached to these shitty artists.
Worship their albums and outfits and success and likely associate being half naked with success and popularity.
They don't even have to be told that. They just see the behavior and emulate it.
My point is. If you show kids racy glamorous popstars they'll aspire to that.
Maybe if you showed a female scientist or olympic athlete or district court judge more female youth would aspire to those things.
...Am i seriously the only windbag on videosift that hold this point of view?

Very Very Sad... Decline into madness...

The sadder part is that they seem to be going through with the filming... (?)
At any other job in the world - she would have been just sent home - no one shows up at a legitimate job in that state without loosing their job. Goes to show you what a leach the system is that endorses a work environment like that. For all the glamor that this industry reports - This looks to be the truer side. A system that continues to suck the life from people long after they are able to function. If the drugs don't get her first, suicide will be next unless something life-changing doesn't come along (which is unlikely.)

Pyongyang Traffic Girls Dropped From The Sky

Reefie says...

This is so mind-blowing I'm going to pee any second now...

At first I'm thinking WTF?!? big time, but towards the end I realised that this is just a recruitment propaganda piece. I bet a lot of teenage girls or their parents would welcome such a glamorous opportunity to advance their lifestyle. As for the reality once they're signed up, guess it'll be like any other military training. I doubt they'll get to be dropped from the sky on a mobile traffic direction platform during their careers, in fact I doubt we'll be seeing common usage of those platforms if indeed we ever see them again at all!

In Defense of the Ethnic Studies Law

Sketch says...

I have to admit that I might be a convert about this. I mean, the reason I'm an atheist is because of the artificial tribalism and division that it creates. Biologically we are all the same species, so I wonder if people would be so obsessed with race if we called it what we do in the rest of the animal kingdom - breeds. That term carries a far less glamorous connotation. Cultures and civilizations might be significant, but race is not.

I'm a jaded bastard, so it's hard for me to completely believe that this wasn't enacted for racist purposes, but if good things happen for bad reasons then it's still good, isn't it? The key is that teaching history needs to include everyone's history. Specialized studies are great electives, but if we are teaching kids world history, then it should actually include the entire world, not just the white parts. I know I never learned shit about Mexican history growing up except how we took the West from them. And I may as well have not known that Africa and South America even existed, for as much as we were taught about them.

Now, whether that inclusion is ever going to happen...? I mean, they are taking Jefferson out of text books, for Christ's sake (Ha! Double entendre)! People have a bad track record for doing the right thing.

You wouldn't expect a dog fight to be this funny

gwiz665 says...

I like the idea of it turning on its head, but dog fighting is just barbaric. While I see the funny part of them disobeying their owners and being all lovey dovey, and the music shifts, the poor dogs are broken for life and will probably die in that ring or a similar one if they haven't already.

I'd rather not glamorize dog fighting by making this more popular. So downvote.

Leaked Military Report Says Afghan Army Nowhere Near Ready

The fighting in Afghanistan is much like Vietnam.

Fire bases, and villages. People who are on the soldiers side one day are against them the next day.

Combat Medical Evacuation to a Humvee of a combat injured villager. The above video plug is an attempt to get the video out of my queue and a way for us armchair types to get a view of what may be happening.

Here is combat helmet footage of a British patrol in Afghanistan. You cannot see any combat kills, but at the very end of the video the soldier hops into a trench with a downed target. It's not all glamor and cake.

Hunter's surprise

Well, I don't want to get into the semantics of glamorous, but yeah, I think there certainly are more glamorous sides to hunting than being covered in succus. Maybe you're confusing glamorous and dating.

Hunter's surprise

The less glamorous side to hunting? Does that imply there's a more glamorous side to hunting, where you seduce the elk after weeks of flirting only to kill it in the chateau jacuzzi?

Driver Wins Biggest Jerk Alive Award

oxdottir says...

>> ^arvana:
It was actually a woman driving.  The guy's voice was the cameraman in the passenger seat.

I watched the video again with Arvana's quote in mind, and while I wouldn't be willing to bet money on it, the film is clearly being taken by the passenger, and the loud voice (next to the camera) is male. I haven't ruled out the idea of someone hanging over the seats from the back of the car, but it seems less likely.

I have to upvote this because I post so many objectionable things, but my immediate instinct was not to upvote it just because it seems like glamorizing such jerk-wad act. I just wonder how I can reconcile having that impulse and yet posting all those horrific European PSAs and such.

Of course you can respond. I don't want a concession I haven't earned.

The failure of Circuit City (or any of the others on your list) has had no meaningful impact on reducing corporate abuse. Circuit City was replace by Best Buy, which treats its employees worse than its predecessor. So in this case, 'wallet democracy' has actually made things worse.

This is because "wallet democracy" isn't based on intelligence, wisdom, morality or any kind of desire for social justice, it's based on convenient location, ad campaigns, low prices and blue light specials. These out-of-whack priorities have no real chance at achieving anything positive, and usually end up doing the opposite, by empowering the worst offenders, like Wal*Mart. I've not shopped in a Wal*Mart in over a decade, but still they thrive, despite my furious wallet. I guess the people have spoken, and working class dignity is an inferior candidate to low low prices.

'State's Rights' is another favorite corporate think tank meme, for the simple and obvious reason that corporations would rather face small enemies than large ones. Corporations have vast resources that they can use to bribe desperate states, to pit states against each other, and to punish states that don't toe the line, among other things.

I don't see local politicians being any less susceptible to lobbying; or local voters being any less susceptible to expensive ad campaigns, in fact, small town folk might be more suceptible to the glitz and glamor of corporate favor than their seasoned national counterparts. A few of the larger metropolitan areas might be organized enough to make a stand, but I can't see it realistically living up to your expectations.

Beyond all that, do you ever use the local control you already have?

-Have you ever attended a city council meeting?
-Do you research your local candidates in any depth?
-Do you know the names of local politicians, state senators, state congressmen, local judges and/or city council members?

Anyway, I like the old Clinton quote that goes something like 'there is nothing wrong with America that can't be fixed by what is right with America'. For better or for worse, our country is 'our' country, and as long as it remains our country, we have the ability to change it. It's easy to feel down about our country, because we are getting our asses kicked by a very small, but wealthy and powerful segment of our population. If enough of us can figure this out, and are mad enough to do something about it, we win. It's a big if.

(hahaha, nice dick joke)
