Batman v Superman - Short Teaser

CrushBug says...

I am looking forward to renting this or catching this on Netflix some time in the future, specifically so I can watch the scenes with Wonder Woman. I think Gal Gadot is an excellent choice.

Adelaide Hills Ablaze, a Firefighter's Perspective

Fantomas says...

I live in the city, but my Dad lives out at Mt Barker and my sister lives near Tea Tree Gully and she had some tense moments recently.
I feel it needs stressing that these guys and gals are not professionals, but volunteers. They have lives and jobs like anyone else and every summer they come out to save lives and homes. Absolute champions.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Drones

newtboy says...

No, I don't HAVE to admit that. He's commander in chief, he should be involved to an extent.
I will say it's a GOOD thing he is forced to personally order a strike on Americans...at least, should that be litigated and found to be illegal, we'll know exactly who to prosecute, but that's certainly not the norm. Normal drone strikes are done by techs under minimal supervision and/or responsibility for the consequences.
It's too bad your political affiliation can't let you see that the last administration was even less transparent. I agree, Obama did not keep his word to have a 100% transparent white house, or anything close to it. It's quite disappointing. I will also say, however, that I assign a large portion of blame to the last administration for making that possible with their 'legalization' of subterfuge, misdirection, lies, obfuscation, declaration of 'state secrets', etc. If we ALL had gotten up in arms then and put a stop to it, Obama wouldn't be able to be so secretive, neither would the next guy (or gal).

Well, you have to admit that Obama is getting very closely associated, even amongst his sycophants, for using drones.

Did i trust the previous crowd? more than the current, but no, there is far too little transparency for me.

Giant Lizard Greets Man Like a Dog

newtboy says...

He looked to be a healthy weight to me. I've seen footage of wild one's that looked even fatter, for instance most marine iguanas in the Galapagos that I've seen looked fatter, but he's certainly well fed and happy.
I did anoles too, in a 200 gal terrarium with tiger salamanders. Every now and then I gave one to the Savana monitor, I figured a lizard has everything in it that a growing lizard needs, so they should make a good supplement.

MilkmanDan said:

I've only had small anoles and stuff in terrariums, but this fella looks awesome. I'm definitely no expert, but it certainly looks like he is well fed -- don't usually see a reptile that fat in the wild. Not that I think he looks TOO fat -- just very healthy.

Gendered Marketing

Jinx says...

Ok. Women want to be perceived as soft (they do? - I'd be careful with that generalisation, your straying into damsel territory there) and feminine (Surprise! ...but what is feminine? - is it soft and pink or something else?). And who doesn't want to be seen as competent and why should it be seen as a masculine trait?

Wait, Let me guess the guys. Do most guys want to be perceived as..masculine...and...*insert positive gender role stereotype here!*.

Oh well, I was close I guess.

So liek. Yes. Your average guy or gal wants to fit into their associated gender role, or gender aesthetic if you like. But it seems to me there is sort of an element of carts before horses here. Are those gender aesthetics a preexisting difference between the sexes or is it an arbitrary divider created by our society through cynical marketing campaigns that have exploited our desire to "belong" to make more money?

Aside from that, what exactly makes a fragrance "tough" or "competent"? I've never thought to describe a smell as competent in all my life. It's all as arbitrary as pink for girls, blue for boys and...pens for women.

ChaosEngine said:

As ridiculous as some of this is, there are some valid reasons why products are gendered (at least in the standard hetero-normative fashion).

There are different aesthetics for genders. Most women do actually want to be perceived as soft and feminine and pretty, and most men do want to be perceived as tough and competent. Hence different fragrances in deodorant, for instance.

But pens for women are just ridiculous...
