Bush Vetos the SChip Bill: Healthcare for poor kids = bad

Cybrbeast and all that agree with you, I would like to kindly reply and hope not to appear to be "flaming" you

In regards to your comment, unfortunately, we are not given a choice about our president. What is the option if we impeach? Dick Cheney? Not a chance, he is even more of a non-thinker and even less of a "decider man" as Bush calls himself.
Considering our electoral system is rigged, and we have a president that does not even consider public opinion, continues a costly war, and all the while we cannot even maintain our quality of life here as far as healthcare is concerned for the lower and middle class.

I myself was turned down for medicaid for a life or death surgery on my spine, whilst at the same desk, an illegal alien was given "emergency healthcare". At the time, I made around 17k a year, which is not enough to even cover healthcare here and eat, let alone have a decent place to live if you are not living with others, which I do to help not waste space.

"Our" cars, with regard to your "generalization" are actually more inclined towards the most fuel efficient options we are "allowed" here in the U.S. while the big oil companies are still holding back alot of the better more "green" options. The upper class people are the ones with the S.U.V.'s and all that land-yacht trash. So pleae forgive them, for they are ignorant unless they are carrying 5+ people.

I think if you actually had real information to go on, you would find that alot of Americans would pay higher taxes in order to get better healthcare. But you see, due to our tax system, our government with Bush in office has pushed the highest tax rates on the lower, and middle class while reducing the tax rates in the higher earning tax bracket.

As for as your more liesurely life, I think that is up for debate if you are to consider "Europe" do you also consider all of the other areas in your "Europe" where people don't even have basic necessities like running water and
simple healthcare?

I feel your points are valid in many ways, but denying the very basic healthcare people need, while spending money on a "war" that "Europe" and all it's neighboring countries should be also doing what they can to help end, is an afront to what the human condition needs to work against in order to blossom.
We should try bringing back a justice system to replace our "legal system" and I truly hope that you, as fellow people on the same planet consider bringing our President Bush to charges just like he did with other "dictators", and you will find that alot of us support you.

I think it's funny how much you hear Americans (generalization) shout about higher taxes. We in Europe have taxes set extremely higher than yours and we live contently, work less hours, have better health care and better pensions.
I think what we did in Europe was take the extra wealth and make life more leisurely and what the Americans did was take the wealth and work extra hard so they could just buy more stuff and drive heavier cars.

Tesla Electric Car on Nightline

Fred_Chopin says...

"Heh. nope. you'll be putting $100 in electricity in your car to go 200 miles."

From Wikipedia :
On the EPA highway cycle, the Roadster's efficiency is "135 mpg equivalent, per the conversion rate used by the EPA"[2] which converts to 133 Wh/km (4.66 mi/kWh) battery-to-wheel or 155 Wh/km (4.00 mi/kWh) station-to-wheel.

Monetary cost offers another way to find an equivalent fuel efficiency. Tesla Motors reports an energy cost of approximately $0.01/mile using PG&E's E-9 night-time incentive charging, or about $0.03/mile using the retail price of $0.12/kWh. Comparison with a gasoline price of $3.00/gallon, for instance, results in an equivalent of 300 mpg (0.78 l/100 km) using E-9 or 100 mpg (2.35 l/100 km) using retail pricing. For more cost comparison details, please refer to the battery electric vehicle article.

Every Day is Earth Day

Fedquip says...

er.. I don't know why you wanted to be a part of this collective Choggie? Considering a recycling box is part of the logo... I have always encouraged the appreciation of Nature here.

It's nice to see that you are worked up about this, but I think it doesn't really lead to any progression on the subject. I am far beyond debating whether Global Warming is real or not.

THEN SHOULDN'T THE BULK OF FOCUS BE SHIFTED TO THIS INSANITY, and not how imporrrrrtantit is that we should recycle, buy fuel-efficient cars and re-newable crap, and use bicycles and skateboards to go to work????

Probably, but do you think average Joe Canadian has an ounce of influence when it comes to the oil industry.

I have been watching the hockey playoffs and every 2nd commercial is for an automobile. Yet I have not seen one commercial for a fuel efficient car. I believe we will see progress once we see average Joe Canadian being more environmental and if that means recycling or biking to work then yes it is important.

FUCK FUCK BULLSHIT FUCK (just trying to speak your language)

I am not sure we're you are from or how you were raised, maybe you think the world would be better if we didn't worry about the Environment. I come from Southern Ontario and in my lifetime it seems the air is more polluted (it is). More importantly our forests are covered in garbage and our water is full of crap, crap thats worst then pooh, I'm talking about toxins and garbage and shit like that.

Maybe it takes a scare tactic like "Global Warming" to get people interested in the Environment. Thats fine with me, as long as we don't have to go to war with anybody. I can see through obvious scare tactics, Global Warming is in the same category as the "war on terror".

Every Day is Earth Day

Agree ain't the point, the content is less imporatant here than the dynamic, the mechanism, and the delivery system.....this guy is a tool for every divertive special interest..
Divertive by this definition
2. draw attention from something: to take somebody's mind off something and draw attention to something else
...this something else being how nice and friendly we can all be to the Planet every day....the kind of non-nutritive snacks that some folks seem to lap up like a cat under a leaking radiator....the same effect, though it takes much longer for domesticated primates, the cat will die from eating the sweet-tasting, green (how appropriate here) liquid...

Answer this Earth friendlies out there??? If in fact, there are alternatives to fossil fuels, (which there absolutely ARE) and if there is even a hint of suspicion that the powers that control these fossil fuels and regulate their necessity and prices, that these persons have colluded to corner a market and indenture the masses to pay them for destroying the atmosphere or worse, make us modern-day putties, THEN SHOULDN'T THE BULK OF FOCUS BE SHIFTED TO THIS INSANITY, and not how imporrrrrtantit is that we should recycle, buy fuel-efficient cars and re-newable crap, and use bicycles and skateboards to go to work????

This world is fucking itself into a corner, and blaming the inaction on the part of the oil industry, her puppets and politicians, on their own ignorance, and ineffectual focus.

FUCK EARTH DAY! Fuck the democrats, fuck the republicans, the moderates, the issues that mean nothing in the grand scheme of civilization's demise....the focus should be on Getting The Users Of Imformation And Men Off The Planet......

then, perhaps we can survive the sun's effect on the planet, as IT causes the effects of global warming, along with the cyclical dance of the Earth and her position in the solar system.....

oh, did I forget Global Warming, FUCK THAT, TOO.....

HHO Gas

coupland says...

And for the record, the reason his vehicle is a hybrid is because hybrids burn gasoline to generate electricity. Usually this is used to create a more efficient vehicle that uses the electricity to power an electric engine, in this case it wastes most of that energy by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen and burning it. The vehicle could not run on purely water, and that's why there's no mention of mileage: because it's unlikely it could outperform a gasoline-only engine. That's also why they say it's passed all "safety" tests but they say nothing about fuel efficiency tests. Water's not a fuel, that's why it has zero calories. (That's not a joke.)

Global Warming: a hoax?

Farhad2000 says...

About the video, it's hard to make someone understand something they are paid not to understand.

And It takes a special person I believe to say that global warming is not real especially given some pretty 'hard' facts, such as the fact that the last hottest years on record were in the previous last 14 years, the last one being 2005. 2005 was a year that records were broken in the US, Europe and India for highest temperatures and rainfall. The ice glaciers around the world have retreated, up in the northen territories you can see trees for miles around drunkenly swayed because the roots are in permafrost that is thawing. Go to Alaska, you can see the effects of Global Warming on the oil pipeline, because since the land is thawing and threatening the structural intergrity of the pipe. Back when I was in africa, rising temperatures over the years created problems with mosiquitos, as they moved into higher locales were most of the cpaitals were built such as Lusaka and Harare. But enough facts, people don't like facts, this is not a story based on facts this is purely economics, and the american people are being taken for a ride.

Kyoto has been ratified by all countries expect 2, the US and Australia. Both countries contend mainly that imposing enviromental policies on their economies would be detremental. The motor industry of course does not want this to happen, imposing enviromental policies in the US would mean that low MPG cars would be encouraged because they are more enviromentally friendly, currently Ford and GM are really not in that business, it's dominated by the bigger companies like Toyota and Honda. The US when compared to the world has the worst cars based on MPG, so much so that american cars doen't pass enviromental laws set in China of all places.

Some states and cities seeing inaction from the goverment are taking action in their own hands. California nearly did this until GM/Ford basically killed it and the restrictions that were supposed to bring California to the MPG standards of China were diluted. At the same time GM's amazing Electrical car got silently killed.

Now to many people, the question would arise about why would the motor industry go out of their way to suppress this. Because enviromental legislation means goverment control and oversight of an industry that's been allowed to get away with alot in the past. Safety issues that were always put on the driver, the legislation the american people had to go through just to get safety standards up in first place. Remember the Ford Pinto? You know that car that if you get rear ended in, chances are you're BBQ toast. Ford knew about this problem, worked out that it's cheaper to face the lawsuits then recall an entire production run.

So you really believe they are not capable of counter-spin to protect their industry? In actuality of course if Ford and GM would adopt mordern policies and improve the enviromental standards of their cars they would only benefit seeing as that would instantly open up new areas for export. GM could give you an amazing electrical car, that is good for living within the city tommorrow, but they wouldn't do that, why give you something today that works? When we can promise you hydrogen fuel cells that are close to a decade away. Allowing us of course to collude and rape the american people and hopefully the rest of the world for all the inefficient SUV gas guzzlers that they want.

This is all risky business, it is possible that Detriot is going to finally dissappear off the map. Ford and GM would lose out and we will all be driving Honda's and Toyota's in the future. You know why because the american car industry has been pathetic since the 1970s, when the oil crisis hit the american people were left with gas guzzlers from Ford/GM and new fuel efficient cars from Japan. Cars from Japan were so much more efficient and cost benefical, car manufacturs lobbied congress to impose trade restrictions on Japan. What happened was a voluntary quota system, where a fixed of Japanese cars were allowed in the US market, thus their low price shot up (high demand- low supply) and Japanese cars attained a high end market and the Lexus and such emerged.

The Japanese did it because it let them make a killing, there was large demand in the US, the quota artifically drove up the price for the Americans, thus Japanese auto companies were for it. Ford and GM were allowed to keep their tiny dominion for a little more, and also made a killing. Who lost? The american people who again got sub-par cars when compared to the rest of the world, paid much more for cars both domestic and foreign, and also pays the goverments imposition of the voluntary export quota.

So, no. I don't think Global Warming is BS. I like the weather like it is now, I don't want to see it change.

A Tribute to the Concorde

Gervaise says...

Yeah, very cool plane, but horribly fuel inneficient. It was designed pre 1970s oil crisis. I think the price of oil has more to do with it being retired than the crash. (Admitedly, the crash was over hyped.)

About fuel efficiency from wiki:
Concorde travelled, per passenger, 17 miles for each gallon of fuel (mpg)(an efficiency of 20 litres per hundred kilometres (l/100km)). This is comparable to a Gulfstream G550 business jet (~16 mpg or 18 l/100km per passenger), but much larger than, say a Boeing 747-400 (~91 mpg or 3.1 l/100km per passenger)

World's Largest Airliner - Take that Boeing!

flavioribeiro says...

Actually, Airbus is having financial troubles because of their massive investments in the A380 project. Their CEO recently resigned, they'll pay massive penalties due to the delivery delays and they'll be forced to do some downsizing.

Boeing, on the other hand, has an unprecedented amount of orders for the 787 Dreamliner, which is designed for fuel efficiency. Airbus won't be able to deliver a competitor to the 787 in many years, meaning that Boeing will be in much better shape in the future.
