The Top 10 Star Trek Technobabbles

And number three was intentionally extra fucked up, because it was made to make fun of technobabble. Seems like the commenter is actually an active football fan and not one of us at all. He may even have a girlfriend! What a jerk.

fair enough. but if you're talking about pure skill (arrogance and bad behaviour aside), maradona has to be up there, if not top, with cantona near the summit. the thing is, most sporting 'geniuses' are headfucks. look at loopy gascoigne. even george best to an extent.

Maradona was a staggering talent and I don't think we've seen anyone since, perhaps Messi, come close to what he could do on a football pitch. Remember in the 1982 World Cup he was kicked off the pitch because opponents feared him. In 1986 he virtually won it single-handed and they got to the final in 1990 where the Germans didn't exactly cover themselves in glory.

The 1994 World Cup marked the start of the tackle from behind rule and the idea that we shouldn't allow defenders to kick lumps out of the best players. Maradona was still playing then but sent home after the positive ephedrine result, but I wonder what he would have achieved under a similar set of rules from the start of his career. At least one more World Cup I reckon.

I'm not a die-hard football fan but for me he's the best just for his goals in 1986 especially his second against England. Also it should not be forgotten he galvanised Napoli to their only league titles in 1987 and 1990.

Either not a football fan, or you're anti-Lions. In which case, why the hell are you watching this video?

As a native Michigander (yes that's what they call them), I miss Barry more than my dog misses his nuts. He made Lions football fun. Sure they're gonna lose, but what is Barry gonna do this week? He was only 5'8", weighed 200 lbs. and half of that was in his legs. I love how on some tackles he looks like the energizer bunny. Sure he's down, but his legs keep going and going and going...

On a sad note, he retired quite early and unexpectedly, just a season short of the career rushing yards record. Why? Because the Lions suck, and he knew they would keep sucking. Man was he wrong, they made HISTORY this season. First 0-16 ever... wait... good call Berry. Come onnnnnnn first draft pick!

Football

Football fans
Willing to fight for a team
That doesn't know their name

Triumphantly abreast
of all the stats
that might be
half as important
as a hill of beans

Simple minds
The glue of a nation

Yet I love it, too
In my own simple way

The illusory warfare
The vicarious triumph

The dramatic agony
of a meaningless loss

The occasional ballet
Of a miracle play

So dubious, so innocent, so corrupt...so earnest.

So American.

I was watching a college game the other week where the announcers even got it wrong. A player caught a kickoff at the 5 yard line or something as it was going out of bounds (but the ball was still in the field of play). The announcers (and myself) immediately commented on how stupid that was. It would have been a penalty on the kickoff team, and now you put your offense on the 5 yard line! But NO! Even though he caught it in bounds, since his first step was out of bounds, it's STILL a penalty on the kicking team.
I found some blog arguing about this exact rule --

ckoff-rules/

I haven't seen the play you're talking about, but it makes sense to me, though I'm a rabid American football fan. Think about it as a reception. In order to technically have possession of the ball, you can't just catch the ball, you have to have at least one foot land in bounds after you catch it (two feet in the NFL). If you catch the ball in bounds but land out of bounds, it doesn't count - it's a dead play, called as an incomplete pass.

Same rules for kickoffs. If he caught the ball on the 5 yard line, landed in bounds THEN took a step out of bounds, it would've been placed on the 5. But because his first step landed out of bounds, the catch didn't count, and it was called as if the ball went out of bounds, which constitutes a penalty. It's the same thing as if he would've followed a kickoff 10 yards out of bounds and caught it - they wouldn't place the ball where he caught it because it was clearly out of bounds. Still, he was stupid for even trying to catch it when the ball was already headed out of bounds.

Okay, back to soccer... errr football.

Sarah Palin as VP? (Election Talk Post)

joedirt says...

Ewwwwww!! La-di-da. She is from a suburb where HOW MANY commute every day?

ZOMG! That is like one stadium worth of college football fans back here in mainland America. That is like the smallest suburb of any large city back on the Continent. I mean, like Dayton is bigger than that.

You are crazy if you think mayor of po-dunk Alaska counts as executive experience, whereas anyone with Washington political experience doesn't count.

She is a cynical ploy to distract people from how old and ugly (on the inside) that McCain is. Just like Obama picked the opposite of himself, McCain picked a decent, probably caring human being who isn't near death, who isn't riddled with cancer or hatred. I'll bet Palin doesn't even support torture.

Football Skills Compilation - Best Of The Showboat

Some of that it looked unspecial to me, not a football fan. Like, what's so great about Zidane receiving that pass out in the open at 3:26? He doesn't lose his defender, and does he even get control of the ball again?

White Lightning

I just saw the clip again. Man, this kid has some field vision. Daaayum!!!

It comes from quick response time and his quick judgments. I say it comes from his confidence built up from his natural athletic ability. However, when he goes to college or even perhaps pro some day his confidence level may dwindle due to raised competition level and injuries.

Hopefully he'll overcome all the challenges and maintain this level of excellence. Him doing well is a great gift to all (american) football fans.
