"The Roper" -- Passion comes when it comes.

Tex Murphy: Project Fedora

PoisonedPawn says...

Thanks for the promote!

Tex Murphy was the series that got me into PC games and I've yet to find a series of games that matches it, particularly, as you say, in terms of tone and storytelling.

Everything they did was so ahead of their time. They made a full, free-roaming 3D adventure when about the only 3D out there was Wolfenstein and Doom. The FMV was also a great benefit to the game, because it's so much better at getting across emotions - something that isn't effectively done in most games. It was also well-acted compared to so much other stuff out there.

My fondest gaming memories are of Tex and this chance to finally see him back in action has me just as passionate about the games as I was 15 years ago. Here's hoping!

L.A. Noire timelapse: "World in Motion"

I'm on the fence about whether to play this. I haven't seen much that convinces me this is a better game than Mafia 2, which had a stunning demo. Anyone play both?

In any case I don't have a lot of need/desire for another giant sandbox game. I'm still playing through GTAIV, which I've been playing in small bits for almost two years now. I feel like I only really figured out how to play it in the past couple months... that game really rewards longer play sessions and keeping track of who all the characters are. With settings maxed, GTAIV on PC still looks damn impressive to me, aside from the faces.

The new tech looks great but I get the same impression of FMV era bullshit factor... "hey we figured out this new bit of technology, let's build a game around it!" ... you're supposed to look at the acting and figure out if the character is lying? But the lie emanates from the script, not the performance. The character is lying or not, no matter how good the animation is. So what's the point? I'd love if GTA IV had this level of facial animation, but I honestly feel the mechanic of "guess if the character is lying" would become tedious after the first couple times.

I've been thinking about picking this one up second hand at some point because of the positive reivews, but it's worryingly reminiscent of the whole mid-nineties FMV game atrocity.
edit:
But yeah, it is very pretty.

It's worth it, it can be compared to other games but isn't quite like any of them. I think it's certainly the shape of things to come though with the face capture.

The ending is a bit wtf, but it's certainly worth a play. If you're not keen on buying it, defiantly rent it.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Hell March Trailer

Kerotan says...

I am disappointed, the hell march in that trailer is one from Red alert 2, where any Westwood fan knows, the original one is the best.

Also I predict that the game will be stunningly mediocre, and not break any serious new ground with the established RTS formula, but the hammy acting and cheesy FMV scenes will return, due to fact that there are more noughts in EA than there is tea in china, but none the less the FMVs will cherished.

Sewer Shark: 10 percent game, 90 percent FMV crap

Fletch says...

I've never heard of this one, but all the FMV reminded me of a PC game called "Critical Path". There were a lot of games like this. I think game companies felt they needed to do something to fill up those newfangled cd-roms, and FMV did the trick.
