What are you reading now? (Books Talk Post)

Anyone else want to weigh in on @kymbos request of the Great American Novel? I think Twain' Huckleberry Finn is a must read (I actually reread this story every couple of years and still enjoy it).
What other candidates do people have?>> ^longde:
Huckleberry Finn>> ^kymbos:
I'm reading Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club, which is a pretty good page turner.
I'm interested in reading some classic American literature if anyone would recommend some for a guy who has never really read any of the classics (like Mark Twain, Hemmingway, Fitzgerald).
I'm green.

I reread Catch 22 every 5 years or so, gets better every time.

edit: oh, not necessarily a classic, though.

Hey, thannks for the leads. I just watched some of Midnight in Paris, and realised I'd never read the classics. Would you suggest I start with your Connecticut one?

Twain is a great choice - definitely read A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. It's LOL funny. Some of my favorites among the American classics are Poe, Emerson, Washington Irving, Walt Whitman, Joseph Heller, Vonnegut (is he counted as classic yet?). Edgar Allen Poe is a must. I first read The Pit and the Pendulum in my 30s and it scared the shit out of me. He clearly had access to the best drugs available in the world at the time. Other top Poe choices - The Black Cat, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Tell-Tale Heart.

I will note that Arnold was right - having nice abs is 5% having nice abs and 95% not having a bunch of fat over them. Get back on the carrots, Zach.

spot on

Forshizzle look at Brad Pitt in Fight Club he's skinny as can be I could put my hands around his waist, and just dance the night away... *stares longingly out the window*

I'm a bit sad to say I'm slowly falling out of love with Louis and Marc Maron. I'm not sure what to do about it.
Dave Chappelle, please start a twice weekly podcast, I'm begging you!

I always want to give people like that what they want and threaten them in the back of a 7-11 with a Gun like in Fight Club.

Another remake... likely because the typical US moviegoer can't be bothered with such activities as... Uhh.. reading (subtitles).

Yeah to hell with reimaginations or reinterpretations...lets read the original papyrus manuscripts and NOTHING ELSE!

Hopefully it'll be a better remake than so many other horrible hollywood reworks than didn't quite come up to par. Good for them if then can pull it off.

If there's anyone I'd trust with this...it would be David Fincher...him or Christopher Nolan. Fight Club is and always will be my favorite movie, no matter who misinterprets it however many times.

The Pixies "Where Is My Mind?" - 8 bit edition

christopher_voss says...

I appreciate all of the kind words. As the artist I feel I needed to address what the point of this work was... Fight Club came out during my Junior year in high school. I had never really heard the Pixies before that point. I fell in love with the song and listened to it several hundreds of times over. I also happen to love chiptune and ran impulse tracker from an old 486 that I had had since the 9th grade. Put two and two together, and this was the result. There is a built in function in DosBox to record the screen (ctrl+alt+f5). During playback in record mode all samples/intruments are reduced to 8-bit. Channel constraints are not present in the strictest of settings for "true" 8bit. Who cares? Deal with it. Again, thanks for the kind words. You can check out my other words at: .

SuicideGirls Fight Club

Yogi says...

I used to have a SuicideGirls account. It was pretty cool back in high school but...meh.

After watching this though I think they've rather missed the point of "Fight Club" as a movie. Whereas Fight Club was about brotherhood and finding manliness again and such this seems more like celebrating a victory and brutalizing your opponent. Fight Club was much different in that after a fight it was customary for the two men to hug, it wasn't about celebrating the victor, there was no real winner in a sense. In fact the time when Jack (narrator) wins and then brutalizes a fellow participant so he cannot get up on his own is one where everyone acknowledged he deviated from the spirit of what Fight Club was about. He was cast as the villain for what he did to Jared Leto's character.

SuicideGirls may have tried to show how it would be if women got together topless to fight in a warehouse but this isn't anything to do with Fight Club. Whoever wrote and directed this just missed the mark and I'd like to see it again done right.

...Or maybe I just want to see topless girls hugging after getting all sweaty...dismiss me if you wish.

Excellent footage of the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot 2011

bamdrew says...

I was at a sport-related "riot"; weirdest part was one really nice SUV parked right in the middle of things had five or six huge dudes standing around it, and the second someone tried to climb on it or shake it or anything these dudes would just start swinging. It was like they were in some fight club and saw that this event would allow them to get into a lot of fights.
