Why expensive watches are so expensive
What I find most interesting is that these fancy watch companies really are trying to make good watches despite their technology being entirely obsolete insofar as making a tool for keeping time goes. Though there are surely a lot of people who are fascinated by and appreciate fine clockwork, they probably aren't the ones buying $50,000 watches and keeping the watchmakers in business. The people buying them are buying them as jewelry for the sake of conspicuous consumption, so for them it's really enough that it's fashionable and expensive enough to be exclusive. I find it so curious because the watchmakers are still doing actual engineering rather than just saying "art" the way a fashion designer might and just trading on the exclusivity of the brand.
Vermilion Parish teacher arrested for asking about raises
Hmmm.....I'm just repeating/paraphrasing what the tv news said. Maybe the reporter misunderstood, or was misled....or maybe I misunderstood. They wanted the angry calls to stop is how I took it, and were distancing themselves from the whole thing.
We didn't have school resource officers where/when I went to school, and I don't have kids, so I know nothing about them. I thought it was to security guard what custodian is to janitor, a fancy name.
That is weird. In my city, the school resource officers are real city police officers. Sounds like nothing more than a rent-a-cop.
Russian parents made you learn Piano? Improvise!
@ChaosEngine --
I've only seen one other piece by this dude, so I can't claim that I definitely "get" what he's going for, but... To me, his shtick is: "I wanted to be a rockstar / guitar hero when I was growing up, but my parents made me learn the piano instead of guitar. So, I'm going to live that rockstar dream via the piano instead of guitar, partially because I enjoy it, partially to stick it to mom and dad, and partially because other people seem to enjoy it as evidenced by views / likes / comments, etc." (And importantly, he can't play the guitar, so he uses the skill that he has available.)
I like his stuff (well, the 2 videos I've seen of his). This one is pretty reliant on bends, and to nitpick I think he should have used an analog pitch bender for that instead of the fancy touch digital one he had. On the other hand, it isn't too critical, and he seems to go for playing by ear without a lot of (maybe *any*?) practice run-throughs which would definitely be required to nail those bend sections perfectly. So, the imperfect on-hand equipment (digital vs analog) and imperfect execution don't detract much from the performance for me.
You're also correct that he played the wrong notes a few times, but in a musically acceptable way -- he was still playing chord notes in the scale and key of the song, but not exactly the same ones as in the original. So while I noticed it, that also doesn't really detract much from the performance for me either.
Taking a piece for another instrument and adapting it to a different one as opposed to trying to "imperfectly" emulate the original can also be very cool. Youtube covers of rock songs on a Korean Gayageum come to mind. BUT, I also get a kick out of my interpretation of this guy's shtick, and don't feel like he's trying to do the musical equivalent of forcing a round peg into a square hole or anything.
Definitely all subjective though.
-45F below zero Coffee VS Water
I have Hyperhidrosis (fancy medical terms for excessive sweating). My palms & feet sweat like 80% of my waking hours. Even if it's just around freezing temperature you can see sweat from my palms turn into steam like you see in this video. So I hate the embarrassment (both sides) when friends/clients/new colleagues reach out for a handshake.
God, at the beginning you can see steam coming off of his bare hands. Like people just start evaporating when exposed to that kind of cold, scary.
ABC News: Purity Balls: Lifting the Veil on Special Ceremony
I don't know, it seems pretty arbitrary to me either way. Actually the best argument for it IMO is that if you only have sex with one person, you aren't going to know if it's good or terrible. You won't have anything to compare it to and therefore something to make your life more unhappy if you think it's bad; one less issue to divorce for as well. Similarly, maybe if you were poor and couldn't afford fancy food, consciously avoiding ever trying the things you couldn't regularly afford so you would never be unhappy with not having it. It would be a question in the back of your mind, but not a source of unhappiness.
It would also have been nice to have some interview questions about how the sons are taught and treated by the same parents.
Waiting until marriage for sex/romance might have made some sense when girls would be married off by 15. (And often dead by 30 from dysentery....) But the world has moved on.
Throwing water into lava may not be a good idea
Never feed a volcano god water... I'd probably react the same way. I believe a strong cocktail in a fancy mug is traditional.

Super 73 ebike review: the best electric bike!
Looks very cool and I want one because of that, but it seems like a massively inefficient design for something where efficiency is pretty important. Why the steel frame? Why not aluminum or one of those fancy bike alloys if aluminum isn't strong enough? Why the big wheels and fat tires with all their extra weight and increased rolling friction just for the sake of aesthetics? The minibike layout does seem pretty good for an electronic bike though.
"Trump has no desire and no capacity to lead the world'
Um, in case the accent didn't give it away, this news broadcast is from Australia. Stop blaming the "Clinton Obama media" - they have nothing to do with it. This is how the rest of the world views Trump.
The media you speak of is overwhelmingly liberal biased and I don't for a second doubt they take some of their cues from Americas media.
As for Trump tellling other nations to pay up for defense or telling it like it is in the climate deal and other common sense yet outrageous as viewed by the brainwashed masses ideas ..
Yes I can see why he is unpopular but he is trying to do what he was elected to do and not win speaking contests on the world stage.
As a canadian I'm pissed off to no end how we the public are supposed to suffer while well off politicians make stupid deals that result in our hydro rates tripling so they can impress the "other" nations about our commitment to saving the earth.
We are in a time of change as Justin Trudeau puts it and well it's just too damn bad for us regular folk so suck it up.
If we really want everyone to make fancy useless speeches maybe Trudeau could offer acting lessons as well as outfit the world leaders in costumes.

Why It's Almost Impossible to Run a Two-Hour Marathon
Yes, by using both pacers and wind blockers, the Nike attempt wouldn't have counted as a world record. At one point it was considered that a sub-4 minute mile was scientifically impossible. The science here would be more reassuring if they talked about that fancy equation, and how it matches various real world runners very well. For example, runner A has a VO2 max of 60, and an efficiency of 95% of theoretical peak. It should be impossible for him to get below the equation's theoretical best time of 2:07, but the best in the world with those stats should get close. Science is all about building a model you think is representative of real life, then test it. I don't see any testing of the model here to prove its validity.
