Vista v.s Ubuntu + Beryl

Sylvester_Ink says...

Also of note, this may all be eye candy, but so are Aero and OSXs interface. This is merely an addition to Linux so people don't complain that Linux has no eye candy. As nifty as I think it is, I probably won't use it myself. But where Linux beats out all the other competition is the sheer configurability of just about everything.

The only thing missing is major gaming support. However, I expect this to change in the near future. DirectSound is slowly being replaced by OpenAL, Direct3D can expect some major competition from OpenGL by the end of this summer (when it's updated to have all the Direct3D 10 features), and SDL does everything that the rest of DirectX does equally well.

In the end, I don't care if the world converts to Linux. Let them stick with Windows and OSX. All I want is to be able to do all the things I want to do on Linux and not have to rely on the other two myself.

How useful are these wiggly windows and 3D views? I run Windows 2000 with a 4mb graphics card and it works just fine, certainly well enough to get all my work done and watch stuff on Videosift.

I am definitely interested in Ubuntu but this eye-candy stuff just distracts from what you can actually do.

pish. it isn't that hard to set up. its 3 lines of command line stuff and 1 file to change, heck you can download a program that does it for you. after that, the prettyest eye candy money(err...) can buy(download for free)

Again, not a fan of PC v Mac debates but can't resist putting my oar in.

I do prefer PCs over Macs. I am used to them. Re Windows, well yes we deserve better. The main line of division however is simply that of price. I know plenty of friends and colleagues who might benefit from a Mac. But when you can build a PC out of old parts (hell my main pc uses a 4MB graphics card) then it's easy to see the value for money arguments. I have built computers for a number of friends all of whom could put together enough money for what they needed but certainly couldn't buy a PC for a £1000 in the shops let alone an Ives design classic. When what they want to do is pretty basic including web browsing, why should they?

Then there's the upgradeability argument - not so good on the Apple platform.

And yet Apple can make desirable AND affordable music players. Their flash-based stuff is great and it's no wonder they sell so many. Itunes is rubbish and certainly doesn't feel like a Windows app on Windows, yet users suck it up.

In both areas the main dictating factors are price and crossing that line when something becomes good enough to use.

If Vista can be "fixed" - they really must seriously produce a robust and secure operating system and the shackles of DRM are removed then we might have something worth looking at. Just providing some new eye-candy and catching up on OSX features isn't good enough when so many people use the Windows platform for work and play and deserve something alot better.

Agreed rickegee, the realities of the worlds' most watched and editorialized events, (snuff is not war-dead or dying) should be witnessed, if the means are there-beheadings included.

Daniel Pearl?? remember him?? His widow and surviving family do….
-Again, to keep true to the theme here, the paradigm,- we live in a world driven by money. The power is in the hands of the well-insulated leftovers of who knows, the Roman Empire?? It sure ain’t fuckin’ Genghis Khan!!!

Military Industry, Pharmacueticals, Fossil Fuels, Banking, Insurance, This is why we fight. Masses are bred, fed, and led, by assumptions and desires, which the archetects of this boardgame understand fully, and exploit skillfully and completely.

The cracks in the ediface, showing and growing for years, are ignored and go unexploited, through diversion and misdirection, by giving the worker-bees what they desire…..pollen comes in new and improved colors and textures nowadays, with lots of flashy lights and cozy warm feeeeeeelings.

Hmmmmm.? Isn’t there a Colesium-like structure in every major city in the world???
And if sports aint yer diversion, then eye-candy, blow-jobs, Allah, Jesus, or mini empire- building is. What’s yours?? A holy crusade against drunk driving, or save the freekin snow beavers’ from wobal glorming!!!???

Collective heads in in asses is why the world chugs along the path of chaos….enjoy the wonder years while you can, the change will be abrupt, and all-encompassing.
Hopi you’ll aaalllllllll make it….
You will, we will.

For the cheap seats:
Am suggesting that less is more with regards to bungling up the site with too much eye candy-simple and sweet, google model. Not to dissuade the efforts of the charmer, find a balance.
The events which inspire participation requiring a bit more than one point five hemispheres of the brain, is a way to weed out posers, without, scaring away potentials... That would really be fun, but of course, we all pay to play, which is where all good ideas become empires....

I've got an X1800XT right now and I don't intend to upgrade again until the second gen DX10 cards come out. I'm interested to see whether it will be nVidea or AMD who has the best DX10 solution.

Heck until recently I was still using a 9800pro, although that card has aged exceptionally well and can still get decent performance if you don't mind loosing the eye-candy.

I like the water effect around the cursor. It would be nice if you could hold a ctrl key down to see that, so you could find your mouse on a huge desktop. I'd always been the first to turn off all the eye candy in XP, until CPU and graphics power became so intense that it really didnt cost anything any more. In todays age of massive cheap CPU power, I say go for it, give me all the organic user interface experiences and spinning cube of desktops, whatever, I'll use it.

Narator at the end "Wow, there is no way that is real-time". I agree. The camera angles and everthing else speak of pre-rendered eye-candy. I can get the same effect by inserting a ToyStory 2 DVD ;-)

Scrambled Hackz

This is pretty sweet technology. However, I don't really see it in it's current iteration as being good for anything other than an "experimental show." If you took the same concept, but added some beat mixing software, the ability to move from one track to another off of synthesized beat, and then forced the program to use video clips from future songs on the playlist for those filler beats, then I think it would be awesome in a club setting. You would get sort of a prediction as to the future tracks, as well as some coherent eye candy, and not just flashes of light to jarring noise samples.
