CBC - The Oka Crisis

Aniatario says...

Some of our extended family in Kahnawake came to stay with us when this all started. We were scared. Our grandfathers, brothers, cousins and friends sat behind those barricades. It's still hard to believe things came to this all those years ago.

Oligarchy: a form of government in which power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society distinguished by royal, wealth, intellectual, family, military or religious hegemony.
Sounds like Bush

Sounds like the Kennedy's too, along with 90% of the US political culture. Actually more so the Kennedy's since there's a larger extended family and they didn't get their money in a super legit way.

Extended families = the tribe.

Not the Pope. Not the Pharaoh.

It means that I as a leader will protect my people, not suck off of them like a giant leech.

Not beg them to trust me as I rob them blind.

Mormon Church Lied About Prop 8 Political Expenditure

ponceleon says...

The problem here isn't LDS, but the current state of the public's attitude. Just think to the civil war. If you asked the "Average" man if slaves should be freed, they would probably say no.

The thing about democracy is that while majority rule is part of it, it also needs checks and balances in order to protect minorities from popular, but uneducated, attitudes. All you need to do is look back to other unpopular causes: equal rights for women, races, etc. At one point or another, these would have easily lost similar votes in their times.

The key is to continue to press for real education and truth and not fear-mongering and hypocrisy.

Religion's ownership of morality is bunk and hopefully this will come to light as we move forward. Just as Steve Harvey's bullshit statement in that other video about atheists, the religious right's claim to righteousness will be undermined ultimately by the hate with fuels it. If you look at the voting numbers for Obama as well as prop 8, you see clear lines drawn at age groups. Eventually the old racist, bigoted people will be replaced by a younger generation that has grown up with friends and family who live openly gay and understand that we are all people regardless...

Finally, I'll just say that this so-called pristine concept of marriage that is supposedly being "protected" is just a fabrication. Marriage does not do anything to prevent horror to the individuals involved, their children, or their extended families. There is not one impartial study out there that can show otherwise. If the religious right wants to maintain "marriage" as it was intended by their specific faiths at their inceptions, then they are talking NOT about a partnership in love, but a business agreement whereby one family sells a female to another for money, allegiance, or some other compensation.

Please if anyone is credited with "inventing" marriage as they are claiming, it is the poets, authors, and other creative people throughout history who wrote of an idealized concept that had little bearing in reality at the time. Ironically, I am willing to be that many of those people were homosexuals...

Who is your favorite long-lost sifter? (Sift Talk Post)

I also miss critttter and uhohzombies, as well as raven, along with CaptWillard, snoozedoctor, tofumar, thesnipe, and mlx. I know I'm forgetting some others right now (cue Auld Lang Syne), but I value the time I shared with them here.

This place is like a large extended family to me. It's big, but not so big that it's impersonal, like Digg or what have you. And just like any large extended family, there are some members we love, and others that we're not so fond of. Just the same, they've all given this place its unique character.

And that character does change over time, mind you. It's inevitable, whether you like it or not. That's just the way things work in life. We have many new members that I value too, and I'm not willing to say that they are less important just because they haven't been here as long. New blood brings vitality, and helps to refresh this place.

Still, I wish some of my old friends were here too.

I'm glad you appreciate them. I have great personal connection to the cause of furthering people's understanding of the dangers of pornography. Members of my extended family have suffered greatly due to it's negative effects. I feel it can be as addictive as the most powerful drugs. People who tell themselves that it's innocent or healthy are just lying to themselves.

I didn't see that thread until recently. There must be a flaw in the code for that page because there is not comment box.

Thanks for sharing those stats. I saw them earlier standing over Boyfriend's shoulder and cheered inside.

You never felt the need to comment on the Pornography post, though?

Okay. That's not the way I see it, though.

In this instance, I rely on facts and studies. You, on the other hand, seem to "take it the way you want it."

Huge Prop 8 Protest outside of Mormon Temple in Utah

PS: Furthermore polygamy is not tolerated because the grounds for child abuse, child exploitation and not committal to sustaining the extended family. This is the same reason polygamy has been shed from the modern Islamic world.

Child abuse and exploitation already have legal recourses. That's no reason preclude the former.

>> ^MycroftHomlz:
I think your specific example imstellar is reductio ad absurdum, or the slippery slope logical fallacy.
In many examples of polygamy, all wives and husbands are not equal. The point is that the law would have to consider this in the granting of rights, division of assets, and the whole mess that comes with the legal definition of marriage.
So my argument against granting polygamy unions in the same context as gay marriage is not simply that the vast majority of polygamist sects involve the involuntary participation of at least one individual, but also that these relationships also have innate hierarchies that would be near impossible to account for in a legal definition.
It is not that I am intolerant of polygamist relationships, it is that the legal definition is not quantifiable in the same way as a union between two individuals.
That is not to say I am against individuals in polygamist relationships entering into legal contracts, what I am saying is that the legal definition is not as straight forward.

That should have ended the fruitless comparison to polygamy right there.

None of those necessarily follows from polygamy, and that exact same kind of argument is often used against gay marriage. That argument is fallacious in both cases.

You say that "Democracy, by definition, will always oppress the minority.", the democracy discriminates only by definition what the collective does not see as being socially acceptable, this is understandable. I don't see you offering any other system that would allow for the minority to be equal.

I read over your views and I wanted to ask you this, if you say that by extension if gay marriage should be allowed so should polygamy would you say that pedophile relationships should be allowed by consenting parties? man boy love and so on?

Where exactly does one draw the line then?

PS: I really think your whole thing about polygamy is a false flag, polygamy is pretty tolerated, sure people who practice live on fringe societies. But there is places you can get killed for being a faggot. Furthermore polygamy is not tolerated because the grounds for child abuse, child exploitation and not committal to sustaining the extended family. This is the same reason polygamy has been shed from the modern Islamic world.

"Oh you support gays you must support polygamy" is just like "Oh you support freedom you must support war"

i did not know that about that....very sad.

i know she just had a child.
