President Obama Says No to Legalizing Marijuana

bcglorf says...

You're honest to god afraid that the fucking Republicans are going to throw a hissy fit over this?

And you're honestly expecting him to pick legalizing marijuana as an economic stimulus as the fight he should use their momentum on? Yeah, with everything else wrong with the country and the world picking to go after a fight like that IS a joke, your just upset because you feel like your one of the ones being laughed at.

Ralph Nader talks about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton

9058 says...

I like a lot of what Nader says here and his assesment of Hillary is spot on. However in terms of Obama i do think he IS playing it safe and not taking a stand on things but i think Nader is a little unfair in the sense that on the Medicare thing he pretty much says he needs to focus on everything thats wrong and fix it. I mean it sounds easy on paper but to execute is a lot harder, and maybe Obama has thought of these things and might try to do what he can but to hold him to a level of perfection is to much. I also disagree with his assessment that if Obama came out tomorrow with clear definite stances on all key issues his popularity and votes would soar. Nader does that and he has failed to win the mainstream. Im not saying its right im just saying that American voters are addicted to the mainstream vague generality of things. Only on rare occasions does a truly passionate in your face candidate win over the American people, most of the time it scares them away.

The byproduct of drunksifting usually produces a few errors as I'm all fired up & stuff, but for the most part, what I say holds true.

"They have positive growth rate" I was referring to birthrate: global birthrate. The main countries with positive growth are African & Arab. You need to have a 20.00 to even sustain sustain a population, Europeans are all in a decline. Why reproduce when there's less pressing matters to attend to? Such as... ummm... gondolas?

Oh my bad, European military might pops in at #19 on the list

Europe's welfare system is supported by Europeans, not illegal immigrants. Roughly 30% of France is now Muslims. With a low "citizen" birthrate, who will pay for the aging Frenchmen? Sounds bulbous to me. Is that the right word? Probably not, but I do like it. Bulbous:)

Whoa jacksinmusic... Do you have any clue what you're talking about? Europe is not a country for starters. Given that starting point it's not surprising that you got everything else wrong too. They have a positive growth rate, has a military only behind the US, Russia and China, and they are one of the most crucial players in world politics.

I have no idea what a pronoun like "bulbous" means when applied to an abstract like "welfare system". I'll assume that you're saying it's bad. Also false and stupid. Europe has a very low crime rate and proportionally low costs for crime prevention and imprisonment BECAUSE they take care of their needy and the needy don't turn to crime as often. On that scale the US system is less efficient because of the huge amount of money wasted on law enforcement.

Maher may not have brought up many facts but at least he didn't make stuff up to fit his argument.

Larry David goes to Starbucks and gets too enthusiastic

plastiquemonkey says...

everything goes right for him all of a sudden! the people who wanted him to do something he didn't want to do change their minds. he finds a doctor to tell him that thing on his skin isn't cancer. his in-laws go home. he becomes friends with shaq, who's a big seinfeld fan, and he catches the evil doctor cheating at scattergories.

(of course in the last 5 minutes everything goes wrong again, back to normal. but it's great to see him happy).

seinfeld has the similar episode, when george decides to do the opposite of everything he usually does. and everything goes great!

No one condones them, but the belief that armed incursion would miraculously fix everything is wrong. This has been tried and failed in Cuba, Vietnam, Somalia, Libya, and now is backlashing in Iraq. All you are supporting there is a new form of imperialism.

Microsoft PhotoSynth

haggis says...

Stuff like this is why rumours if Microsoft's impending death have been greatly overstated. They have the resources to hire the best minds in the business and let them tinker around with this sort of technology without needing to put pressure on them to release a product. It's only when they scale operations up that everything goes wrong (Windows, Office etc) and an open source development model becomes the most productive option (and it seems like MS has finally realised this and is starting to become more OS friendly).

@ThwartedEfforts: I can see why you'd think that, but I just watched an interview with one of the devs on this project at http://channel9.msdn.com/Showpost.aspx?postid=220870 - the algorithms that identify the points of similarity between images really aren't fussy. They don't care about resolution, or lighting, or the angle of the lens etc., and so you don't need to have decent pictures or spend any time setting it up - that's the whole point of this. You can take a bunch of pictures with the same tag off Flickr and Photosynth will do the hard work of stitching them together.

Also, this isn't going to be a product, as such - it's going to be a technology around which products can be built, and as such it will be free. Cool! Imagine using a web plugin to 'walk' around a hotel before you book it, without being limited to the pictures in the brochure to make your decision, by letting it gather pictures of the same place from all around the web. That said, to eliminate false positives it would probably be best used in conjunction with some kind of geotagging mechanism and text tagging.

What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?

peppergardkeys says...

I agree this video is pretty bad. Saying this does not mean that I'm a homophobe (which I'm not anyway), nor that I should go back to church--the problem with the video is that it is mainly smarmy responses to attacks that are admittedly not that well-thought out in their own right. But, smart ass responses to stupid claims doesn't make a convincing argument, especially as regards an issue as intractable as morality.

For a second example--"Biblical condemnation?" He points to other moral dictates of the Bible that are no longer observed. The Bible being wrong about slavery does not mean it's wrong about homosexuality unless you accept that the Bible is either right about everything or wrong about everything. Of course the Bible isn't wrong about every moral principle (think the blessed-are-the-merciful parts.

And to prevent any misreading of this post, let me be perfectly clear that challenging the arguments made in this video is not in any way equivalent to arguing that homosexuality is immoral.
