Leonard Nimoy Vs. Zachary Quinto - Old School Vs. New School

sanderbos says...

I don't even know what the advertising rules are here in the Netherlands, but it really jumps out at me that the competitor is so explicitly mentioned (in the Dutch commercial Nimoy would drive an undetermined eastern europe car I would guess).
There it is at second 37, the 'CLS 550 Mercedes sucks compared to our Audi'. (I know nothing about cars, but from what I know about commercials I'm going to ahead and assume that that's actually incorrect)

Americans older than or equal to a baby boomer opinion: Eastern Europe is so messed up, it's like they're only half human due to Socialism and junk. Listen to the child, ruined by lack of freedom. Let the child be happy and free -- send him to the United States so it can learn.

Cameras and a global connection bring out the truth in our world, don't they? The internet came out just in the nick of time. Thanks Al Gore, let me misquote you some more.

i know it may not seem like it, but there is actually, usually, some distance between trains. More than enough for her not to have been hit.
That being said, I would've shat my pants

Usually yes.. Back 1999 new year, we were on a backbag trip thru eastern europe, filming the whole thing to 8mm and with one of the new award winning Finnish document producer on the camera, he leaned over the window, started doing a slow pan shot and once he got it and started to climb back in, a powerpole swush past his head, it was literally just 1 or 2cm... we check the situation and they were really going only 15cm from the train.. This was in Poland, Warsaw-Bialystok line (i think, could've been in Lithuania too)... No doubt they have increased margins since.. We almost lost a great talent.

Drafting Like a Boss

evilspongebob jokingly says...

jeez where did you trendsetters learn math? Obviously from a "school" or "college" and not from the tubes. Philistines.

None of you have taken into account the well known Lebowski Theorem which is a functional analysis that clearly establishes the baselines and relative variances of giveafuckness relating to the speed at which humans are travelling within the vicinity of large moving objects (Please refer to the 7th Kowalski Variance of the Lebowski Theorem if the large objects are stationery).

I think you'll find reworking your so called "equations" using proper interweb math - particularly in trying to reach some sort of proof involving videos from eastern europe - you'll reach a much more satisfying conclusion.

as maestro has astutely pointed out, you've errantly assumed this truck can full stop in zero time. Hurp de durp de durpidy pthhhhhhhhhhh
>> ^Jinx:
>> ^maestro156:
Seems likely to me that he'd be able to brake faster than the truck could break, and if the truck started pulling too far away leaving him exposed, he could coast on the shoulder till he can safely stop.
I'm not saying I would do this, but it doesn't seem all that dangerous. I guess the one thing to worry about would be road debris, since he can't see it coming.

I dont think its about who can stop the fastest, its about how fast you can start stopping.
He's about half a metre away from the back of that truck. He's doing 90kph. Human reaction time is about .2 of a second. Lets do the maths.
90,000m/3600s = 25m/s
25m/s 0.2s = 5m
He's going to travel 5 metres before he even starts slowing down. If that truck has to brake hard he will go into the back of it. Granted, his speed relative to the truck won't be very high but it would prolly be enough to send him arse over tit. at close to 90kph. and he aint exactly in leathers.
I'm not even sure he could stop faster than the truck. Sure, the truck is heavier, but it has 4 wheels, big thick tyres and a lower centre of gravity. Lets do the maths.
The coefficient of friction between road bike tyres and average russian tarmac is...no I kid.

No I didn't? I just assumed the truck would slow enough that he could go into the back of it. So ok, the truck travels 4.8ms, the bike travels 5m. He's now 30cms from the back of the truck, and only now is he gonna start braking. Assuming they decelerate about the same, and I'm not even sure you can stop faster than a truck on a bike, there is still a 3m/s difference in speed with 30cms of room between them. Like I said before, he won't be going very vast relative to the truck when he collides, but his wheels are still going to be spinning prty quickly and I'd guess that would be enough to put him on the pavement...or you know, the risk is large enough that I wouldn't want to try it.

And this is ignoring all the myriad other risks from travelling at 90kph blind. Maybe his attention is on somebody in a car with a video camera in the lane next to him, and suddenly his reaction to the truck braking is delayed...maybe a pothole appears under the truck. Or a puddle. I'd rather base jump than do that.

The Making of the "Jive Talk" Scenes in Airplane

conan says...

Well, at least in the old world there are various ways: scandinivian countries to my knowledge only use subtitles, france and germany both have very sophisticated Voice over industries. The example above aside it is very hard to spot if a Movie was voiced over in German because the speakers do an incredible Job of matching their words and pronounciation to the lip movements of actors. You actually can make a Good living as Voice over Artist. Especially the voices of Big stars can go into advertising etc (Bruce willis' Voice Guy does that a Lot). Really funny are Voice overs in eastern Europe countries, you can often find Movies where One Single speaker does all the voices without Even trying to make them Sound different :-)

>> ^dag:

That's really interesting. Would be curious how other languages handled it.>> ^conan:
as you might or might not know: in germany movies don't get subtitles but instead get a voiceover. naturally, this brings along some problems when there's play with languages such as in this case. "Airplane!" is a great example of how translators deal with this.
Have a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEkI0cH_rK4
So what they did is they let the two guys speak in a very thick, bavarian accent. bavaria is a region in south-east germany that's pretty much your cliche germany. beer for breakfast, sausages, huge 34oz beer mugs, castles, bretzel, leather shorts etc. it doesn't get more "german" than bavaria. there's certainly a racist touch to it (at least in my eyes because the "joke" depends on the audiences disbelief / surprise of a black person being a "real" bavarian) but i thought it's a good example of voice over strangenesses.

I can't believe all the snow - on the street, pushed against the houses. Wonder where this was filmed?

Well somewhere over in europe this year, lot of places in central and eastern europe got hammered with snowfall though not much in cold canada this year, they can have our snow. Though last year it could have been in Ontario. Last winter we had places with 4-6m of snow on the ground in a 1 week period. And I spent more than a few weeks out with friends shoveling off roofs and trying to dig people out.

Lawsuit After Guy Tasered 6 Times For Crooked License Plate

I don't think the officer's response would be any different if guns were banned. Firstly, he wouldn't have walked up to the window because the suspect wouldn't be inside the car. He'd be standing outside the car, hand in pocket, blatantly ignoring the officer's commands and behaving in a hostile manner. Secondly, as was mentioned in a previous comment, criminals will still have guns regardless of gun laws. That's why they're criminals. They don't follow the law. Statistically, the majority of guns used in crimes were obtained illegally to begin with.

Statistically there are dying more people of gun-related injuries in America than anywhere else. Surely this has nothing to do with the MASSIVE amount of guns in the homes of America.

@hpqp in Eastern Europe on the other hand the cop would have shot him a hole in his tire, punched him in the nose and demanded his belongings, oh and of course the cop would be a bear. In uniform though.
