El Niño is back. Here's how it works.

poolcleaner says...

El Nino causes coral bleeching? That's when the symbiotic algae that gives the coral its color dies off. In the long run, those reefs bleeching out will die off and that will cause more long term problems in those oceans. Fuuucking BABY JESUS!

What Happens if All the Bees Die?

newtboy says...

From my investigation, that's incorrect.
The places in China where hand pollination is used still have bees. The reason they do hand pollination is they switched to a very few varieties of apples and pears...and apple and pear trees need a DIFFERENT apple or pear tree to pollinate, so if you only have one apple variety (the norm there) it won't self pollinate, no matter how many bees there are. Also, climate change is putting the bee cycles and the tree cycles out of synch, making natural pollination even more difficult or impossible. By hand pollinating, they are able to have less than 10% 'pollination' trees to 90% 'fruiting' trees, and pollinate on the tree's cycle. THAT'S why production was better with hand pollination, not because people could do it better, but humans could target which pollen to use on which flower/tree. Also, commercial beekeepers won't 'lend' (rent) their hives out, or require high payments for them pricing most farmers out, because farmers there still use pesticides that kill bees through the pollination seasons.

Other areas that used to do hand pollination have stopped thanks to education. Now they plant more variety (so the bees/insects/birds CAN pollinate for them) and use less pesticides (that they actually didn't realize would kill bees) and are getting better yields for less money than the Chinese.

EDIT: These 'studies' always seem to ignore the incalculable cost of removing all the natural food pollinated by bees, and the collapse of many food webs caused by the loss of that food base. If people are spending cash to do the pollination work, you can be certain they'll go to great lengths to NOT share that produce with any wildlife.

Also, human hand pollination doesn't work for crops like certain grains and smaller vegetables and nuts, main human food sources. It only works for foods where a single pollinated flower will produce something worth the cost of pollination...grains simply don't, and neither do most vegetables, fruits, or nuts. Only large fruits or vegetables could use this economically. So while you're correct, it CAN be done, doing it across the board would probably quadruple the cost of average foods, if not worse.

WIKI-" If humans were to replace bees as pollinators in the United States, the annual cost would be estimated to be $90,000,000,000.[4]"

So there is a place in China where the Bee's just left/died out. But there was still the need for something to pollinate Chinese apples/fruits. So without bee's humans turned to...humans. Human pollination turned out to be way better than bee pollination, and production increased 30-40%. So despite what this video said, human's can live, and still have those products that "need" bee pollination. However, hand pollination in the U.S. or in the future will be way more expensive than in China. In fact, in China they're already beginning to experience what might happen when hand pollination gets too expensive.

That all being said, if people really want something, people will figure out a way to get it!

Mr. Plinkett Reacts to the Star Wars: Force Awakens Trailer

Sagemind says...

Loosing my head every time someone says, "What, a black guy? What happened to the clones?"
The production of clones stopped after Order 66. The clones died off rapidly with their accelerated aging. Once the Empire took over, Storm Troopers were made up of people from concurred planets. All Troopers were human because of the Emperor's distrust of Alien races.

There were no living clones left in Episodes 4-6

ayn rand and her stories of rapey heroes

VoodooV says...

Rand hasn't been dead THAT long. give it another 100 years or so to see if people still put her on a pedestal. It's already glaringly obvious that no-holds barred capitalism is harmful and not a good way to go.

It's just like racism. There are still a lot of people who were alive when having separate fountains for the colored folk was considered an ethical viewpoint. Just because we have laws that say that sort of behavior is not ok doesn't mean people change their views. You basically have to wait for that generation to die off or be confined to a nursing home before real change to occur.

Thus it is the same with the Rand disciples. There are just too many people who firmly believe unrestricted capitalism is still the way to go and you won't be able to change their opinion, you have to either successfully remove them from a position of influence or wait for them to croak.

Street Harassment Of Women In New York - An Art Project

entr0py says...

That would be incredibly oppressive. Men can act in such shameful ways if the culture permits it. But when every reasonable man and woman has the courage to stand up to that kind of bullshit I think it dies off. Because even selfish men want social acceptance.

I hope the courage of these women sets an example.

Snooker - Ronnie O'Sullivan final frame in Welsh Open Final

A10anis says...

I used to love the smokey, boozy, atmosphere in snooker halls. A, usually, male arena filled with characters. A great game which, tactically, could be as intriguing as chess. But when smoking and, in many clubs, drinking was banned, the atmosphere became sanitised; kids were running around, and the clubs started to die off. Not unlike, it has to be said, the British pub trade, which has declined for similar reasons.

Coming out to my sister live on camera!

BoneRemake says...

You're attitude is disgusting.

These come out to people on camera videos are usually meant as inspirational or in some way positive, sometimes negative when it goes that way ( usually people with your mentality of ignorance and double slit narrow minded vision. The whole Homosexual orientation in media such as this is the same as other minorities trying to get the same value and respect that is owed and deserved by those different than yourself, it is your mentality that will drive this point until you wieners either die off or change your mind once you take logic into account.

It is not sad that he recorded this, it is sad that this sort of movement has to even exist

The only reality that this woman has to disregard a possible nephew or niece is the one you persist on having, were they can not unite and adopt children who need love and caring, aka FAMILIES.

Yeah, this guy comes out, and he has to have a camera record the whole thing. It's sad.

This poor women might as well forget getting any nephews or nieces. Very sad.

Ellen Page Announces She's Gay At Las Vegas H.R. Conference.

Yogi says...

Yeah the media is just a big monster that needs more and more food daily. Lantern may have personal issues with it, but I don't care about his personal issues or biases until it actually hurts someone. I think people should be allowed to be as racist or bigoted as they wish as long as they leave others alone. They'll all eventually die off and if enough gay people are nice to their kids it'll all turn out fine.

He seems to be safely corralled inside his own mind and mostly harmless save for the grass of regurgitated thought that covers his paddock...ok I went too far with this metaphor.

You're right though it's a matter of what is the target of derision, which in my thinking the proper target is the media.

VoodooV said:

well we know why the media cares...because their motivations are based on ratings. All they care about is controversy. They probably don't give a shit that Ellen is gay or not, but they know that a lot of people do care (looking at you lantern) Acceptance of homosexuality is over 50 percent, but it's far from universal.

I agree, my very first reaction to hearing about this was "don't care" But there is a significant difference between our "don't care" and lantern's "don't care" one is a supportive indifference, the other is obviously derogatory.

basically, Lantern is lying...he does care. He obviously cares about the lesbian posts on his facebook that he can't be bothered to hide if it upsets him so. He cares so much as to repeatedly register his not caring on the sift.

I think you and I yogi, look forward to a day when this isn't news because it isn't controversial.

By his own admission, he doesn't view gays as legitimate...but if he didn't care...

...he wouldn't care.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Star Wars Edition

chingalera says...

dzonny n' poolcleaner, here's another vote just for you two and some unsolicited insight as to perhaps why this vid isn't enjoying some stellar erection err..ascension: Star Wars fans as advanced in age as those depicted here well, they're dying-off or have moved-on. The fond childhood memories of epic cinematic outer-space masturbation have given-way to the worries and trials of a civilization saturated with entertainment, regurgitate art and culture, and the concerns of real-world issues like, "My children will never experience the thrill of cinema like I did because all the fucking movie theaters are either closed, or packed with 16 pieces of cinematic crap that costs way too much for a poor-quality product. Oh that and the demise of language and culture, as the world is turned into a single amalgamate of herd-like automatons.

Plus this song has been parodied so many times as to become nauseating.

But I'm just a cynical bitch so give it some time....more SWG's will come out to play after I remind everyone how much the franchise SUCKS DONKEY BALLS!

Largest Mass Bumblebee Die-Off Ever Recorded in Oregon

bcglorf says...

" this ever-more frequent and distressing phenomena"

As I found above, this isn't a poorly understood 'phenomena'. Somebody sprayed the tree with a pesticide known to kill bees while it was in bloom and loaded with bees. No surprise or mystery with the outcome of thousands of dead bees. It's distressing when someone fouls up like this, but nothing about this is "ever more frequent". This is an isolated incident. Its likely that this human screw up will be repeated somewhere else, but the cause and the prevention are 100% understood and we know exactly how to stop it. Don't deliberately and intentionally use chemicals designed to kill bees on trees loaded with bees and they won't die this way again.

I've heard all manner of people talking about the mysterious mass die off of bees that's happening around the world. This incident is absolutely 100% unrelated to that in every imaginable way.

David Cross - Minimum Wage

chingalera says...

The incessant advertising does work y'know? The formulas' a simple one, been used-to-abuse for decades now.

24/7 media barrage touting food-like poison for over 30 years = nation(s) of obese, ignorant wage-slaves with bodies and minds unable/unwilling to break-out of a toxic-to-the-species, cycle.

Brilliant eugenics model, keeping the guilty and culpable free from responsibility and unable to function efficiently while the few sit back and wait for the rest to die-off.
