Search Only Within Videos That I Have Upvoted (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

The way it works is:

Of the millions of votes in the database, a tiny sliver belong to you. Of the hundreds (?) of thousands of videos, a tiny sliver are ones you'd find with a search.

Picture it as a Venn diagram with a giant circle for all votes and a giant circle for all videos, and they intersect just a tiny, tiny bit (almost not at all) for a search of videos you've voted on.

The trick is to make it so when you do such a search, the system is able to whittle away all of the excess votes that don't belong to you and simultaneously whittle away all the videos that don't match your search and simultaneously link together the matched videos with only the matched votes.

The syntax for performing this type of query is straightforward, however, that would kill the database, so I need to be able to make our internal search engine support it, however, when the search engine is indexing for these types of parameters it may kill the database, and we need to index semi-frequently.

So, long story short: Maybe it'll be doable, but maybe not. I know "no global search, just the ability to search my votes" sounds like a piece of cake, but it's really a much huger task than it seems.

Yea, a global search would be completely unnecessary - just the ability to search within my personal list would do just fine. I know nothing about the specifics of how to implement this, but thanks for the reply and consideration. Hope you can get it to work.

BBC 1981: F1 engine failure mechanics

oritteropo says...

Yes, exactly. It seems strange that they were seeing failures from springs at such low engine rpm's, but in any case I have heard that you just can't achieve more than 18,000rpm with springs no matter what.

I have found a web page with some nice diagrams and explanations of the electro hydraulic system used by Renault... they have indeed done away with the cam entirely (at least in testing, not sure if it has raced since that article was published). Since the engine management system would have to manage this, and it is a control unit supplied by McLaren, we can be fairly sure that all the engine manufacturers have a common system.

It seems like such a waste to be compressing those springs thousands of times a minute... or to be driving the rotation of heavy cams for that matter.
Someday this may all be electronic. Renault is playing with that aren't they?

Does Government Have a Revenue or Spending Problem?

peter12 says...

Last graph (adjusted for inflation per capita) should be put in a separate diagram because of high risk of misinterpretation (750-->7000 instead of 2000-->7000)

He forgot one thing, people today are more productive then they were 60 year ago (Productivity growth 1947-2012)

To bypass this problem spending should compared with GDP ( market value of all final goods and services produced within a country in a given period of time): Total Government expenditures by major category of expenditure as percantages of GDP: 1938-2009. It is stable since 1968, nearly 30% of the GDP.

Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle Experiment - Veritasium

It's the only one I've ever seen demonstrated practically, without cartoons or diagrams. Now I'd like to see the double-slit experiment.

That has to be the most comprehensible explanation/demonstration of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle I've ever seen.

Glenn Beck talks to Penn Jillette

VoodooV says...

that blackboard is pathetically hilarious!

because yes, it's possible to diagram the complexities of the human condition as it pertains to politics and governance so simply.

And even if it were possible. Glen Beck is the one that's got it figured out? yeah right.

He, and to a lesser degree, Jillette are both pretending they're these deep intellectuals, when reality they're both just personalities performing mutual masturbation of their egos.

I'm tired of these people constantly treating the gov't as the enemy.

Government is......YOU.

Gov't is a reflection of the people it governs. So if gov't does poorly, that means we as a people did poorly. People of all political leanings work in gov't Doesn't matter if the Legislature/Executive/Judicial lean left or right, the vast bulk of the gov't and it's functions are made up of people just like you and me.

so if you don't like it, it's your duty to vote or to run for office. stop being an armchair politician and participate. It's easy to sit from afar and point fingers. It's hard to actually be involved.

This idea that each person is a nation unto itself is absurd. It's ego run amok. You don't know everything, you can't do everything. We are better together than we are apart.

I'm also fed up with how people like to put the Constitution on this pedestal as this divine document. Yes, it's a very good document. It serves a very useful purpose. But it is not this infallible, divine creation some people seem to think it is. If it was so great, we wouldn't need Amendments.

The history of human governance can be summed up in one sentence: "Well, we thought it was a good idea at the time." Guess what, in the future, someone is going to come up with a better idea, and further down the road, someone's going to come up with something better than that...and so on and so on. Each future generation is going to look back at us us and say "what the hell were you idiots thinking?!" Just like we look at our previous generations and say the same thing.

Popping a Mercury Filled Balloon in Slow Motion

@GeeSussFreeK : Surely the answer to that very conundrum would be a website (or mobile app, or both) devoted to listing as many potentially dangerous substances and safe handling guidelines, with plenty of diagrams and things broken down into bite-sized chunks of info.

Just a big old search box or iconographic collection of symbols to click on and quickly see how you might handle the substance. Have all the pertinent stuff right there and quick to scan, with lots of links for further information and deeper understanding of why you must do x or y.

Man, I'd love that site/app.

Why doesn't it exist damnit?

Einstein's Riddle (Blog Entry by dystopianfuturetoday)

Took me just under a half hour. I drew a diagram instead of using a chart. Was much more clerical work than riddle solving.

Pluto is not a Planet; CGP Grey explains

Sagemind says...

I truly don't care about man's NEED to label and categorize everything.

What I do care about is giving us the whole picture, like the size differences, the distances, how many planetoids are in this Kuiper Belt and so on. Give us the diagrams so we can see what is there. I've never heard of this belt (perhaps my focuses were elsewhere).

Why is this never mentioned in Elementry school is any realistic way. I bought my son a stack of books (set) from Schoolastic. One book for every planet. I'd hoped he would get a better idea of the things around him. what they have failed at was defining their relationships to each other and never mentioned anything about the other members of Kuiper Belt and the Asteroid belt. (Hell Kuiper doesn't even exist in spellcheck - so who isn't taking this seriously)

The labels just help us to memorize and document them, but names don't make us understand anything about them. Lets educate through understanding.

Women in Refrigerators

budzos says...

Feminists are some of the most boring people on the planet, next to Christians and sports fans. They remind me of the Eddie Izzard joke about the boring kid who puts everything into Venn diagrams. Feminists seem to live their life obsessed with notching down hash marks in a two-column M/F scoresheet.
