McCain still claiming USA founded on Judeo-Christian values

quantumushroom says...

God does not exist, and never will.

You can't disprove the existence of God, either.

It is you who are evil, that sayeth believe in book written so long ago that you have to take on faith what is written in it as truth.

Without God, there is no good or evil. Everything is permitted.

There is no truth, there are no lies, there is no devil there is only us.

Without belief in a Higher Power, the only supernatural being man can emulate is the devil. Even history's greatest monsters thought of themselves as good people doing what they knew to be best.

Free your mind from the folly of religion and realize what happiness you have on this earth, this instant, gotten from the spinning of electrons around a nucleus.

It's easy to make such proclamations when one is enjoying life and in good health. Those suffering through no fault of their own might not see it that way.

Go read a history book, instead of a book on faith.

Or read both. Religion is an intertwined driving force throughout history, in a world that demands meaning.

To be an atheist is to believe that Hitler and Mother Teresa are now both equally dust and nothingness. If people were capable of crystalline reasoning and not tricked by their own hearts, there would be no need to acknowledge a Higher Power.

Hitchens vs. Hitchens

Well, Peter gets a couple of things wrong - one being the the idea that ethics comes from nothing for the atheist. He couldn't be further from the truth - right and wrong are clearly products of the sentient mind and its evolutionary origins.

Evolution occurs within the web of natual law and is therefore nonrandom. We (along with other sentient creatures) developed (evolved) empathy, which gave rise to a basic form of the "golden rule" - I would argue that this is the primary basis of all ethics. The irony is that even if you subscribe to the bible, you necessarily pick and choose which ethical precepts to follow (as they are mutually exclusive as presented in the text) and it is on the basis of this inherent biological/cultural ethics that you make these distinctions - not the literal (or even figurative) reading of the scripture.

I have already alluded to the other misconception he subscribes to in the "debate", that is, the idea that evolution is "random". It is most definitely not. No more so than the orderly arrangement of molecules within a crystalline matrix are "random". Like the molecules, evolution follows the "rules" of nature - those genetic configurations that produce phenotypes more efficient and effective at producing offspring (surviving to reproduce) will contribute to the future and thus pass on any beneficial variations which they possess - a slow and gradual process which ultimately leads to macroscopic change or "speciation".

No real magic or "randomness". All by the rules - just look at similar natural solutions to various natural puzzles - wings for flight (avian and mammalian), "fins" for water motion (including fish and mammals). If you look you will see that there is nothing "random" - the best solution is that which is perpetuated, as one would expect from a rational universe.

We don't have all the answers, but I think it is at least reasonable to think that we're on the right track. But remember - atheism is not a set of dogmatic beliefs, just a rejection of one belief.

Supercooling

Popo says...

You can reproduce something like this if you put a vodka cooler in the freezer until very cold( I tried with Rev, a kind of energy drink with 7% vodka), it stays liquid due to the alcohol, but if you pour it over an ice cube it instantly turns to slush.
I believe that the crystalline formation in the ice cube forces the water to line-up and form ice crystals.
Anyway, it's a neat party trick.

X1 Electric Car vs. Ferrari & Porsche

ren says...

Depends how you define cheap, is there a value placed on the cost of our atmosphere? What about when everyone in China wants a H2 Hummer?
The problem isn't the amount of oil left, its the rate it can be extracted and refined. Demand has overtaken supply and this reflects in your day to day petrol price at the pump. Even if the most ambitious plans to get more oil like shale oil and magical crystalline oil deposits at the bottom of the ocean come online, they will never be able to catch up with demand.

Bottom line is we have to cut back on our consumption, while replacing our dirty tech with clean tech... and big business doesn't like the sound of that idea.

Nuclear reactors aren't the best solution, but will be the most likely to happen because humans are lazy and proper green technology is still in the too hard basket for half-wit politicians and greedy-ass corporate vampires.

Must burn you up inside to watch an evil electric car out-drag the fastest road cars.
