EconPop: The Economics of Elysium

Trancecoach says...

Whoa, watch your language there, sailor! While I admire your thoughtful and intelligent critique, calling it BS isn't all that constructive.
I'm curious to know who specifically raped you (so as not to trivialize your serious allegations).

Elysium has it's problems, but this right wing economic diatribe is BULLSHIT.
YES we have all been fucked by a small percentage of wealthy fucks.

#LikeAGirl -- attitudes exposed and transformed

bareboards2 says...

Empire and I got to the other side of this with a respectful conversation in the lounge.

Empire was honestly interested in why I was upset, and wanted to understand why. That seemed like a worthwhile investment my time.

If you just want to debate the video, I'm not interested. You have a right to your opinion about the video. I don't agree with it, and more importantly to me, I'm not interested in arguing about why I don't agree with it.

And I have a right to my opinion: that your critique of the vid is an example of "mansplaining." Chastise me to your hearts content. You have your opinion. I have mine. I chastised you. You chastised me. We're even, as far as I'm concerned.

As I said above in my response to Fairbs, which perhaps you didn't get a chance to read -- I do apologize for the use of the word "mansplaining." I wish there was a shorthand word that was more respectful that communicates complex and pervasive phenomena.

Anyway. If you want to understand why I was upset, I'll gladly try to explain.

If you want to debate about the video, and try to prove to me that your opinion about the video is correct, I'm not interested. I'd rather read my new Funny Times.

Private message me if you want to meet in the lounge. I promise you a respectful conversation.

@bareboards2 I am utterly stupefied by your ability to dismiss my argument whilst at the same time not addressing any single part of it. Without so much as questioning my reasoning, you've labelled me, stuck me in a box and judged me, calling on others to hear of your sadness at.....what? Detailed, thoughtful and politely delivered criticism?

The worst thing here is that if i were to suggest that your reply, or the content of this video, was "femscaping" or something similarly derogatory then you would have lynched me up on the nearest tree for sexism - the thing you want to stop. Yet when you dismiss a comment i make as something equally sexist and based entirely on my gender (because you sure as shit never once mentioned any part of my argument), that's absolutely fine.

Is it really beneficial to your cause to attempt to censor people who question the content of the message; label them, dismiss them and profess your sadness for the human tragedy of ignorance like a scientologist? A good conclusion with good evidence would not need your protection from my scrutiny.

If you think i'm on some sort of misogynist bandwagon, then you're dead wrong about me. I've criticised a couple of videos recently because i considered them to be supplying dodgy data or trickery. Whenever a video wants to make evidence based claims, i reserve the right to question their methodology and that is fundamental to any kind of evidence. The topic is entirely coincidental.

If you have a problem with my argument then by all means i welcome your criticism, but criticise the argument rather than calling me sexist names. What you did to me is no different to if i had simply commented "militant-feminist bullshit" without addressing any of the video, at which point you would have highlighted your plight and appealed to sympathy. But no, i offered a thorough explanation of my feelings, and i'm still the horrible mansplainer. No - i'm analytical, and i make no apologies for the damage that does to your cause.

Of all the people who offered detailed criticism of this video, one of them sided with you and the other didn't. Guess which one you engaged in discussion? I even offered you examples and reasoning, but no, i get just sexism.

Solar Roadways - Reality Check

xxovercastxx says...

Less snobbery and more information would have made for a better video.

Ok, so it'll cost 20 trillion dollars to replace all the roads in the country... How much would it cost to repave all those roads? I suspect that would also be more than the annual federal budget, yet all those roads still exist.

Apparently it takes a shitload of energy to melt ice, but how much energy does it take to prevent ice from forming?

Skepticism is absolutely the correct position here until we begin to see functional systems in real-world situations but, if you're going to spend the last 3 minutes of your critique video puffing on about how you're doing the real investigative journalism that we all need, then maybe you should perform a proper investigation and reveal your facts and findings like an intelligent adult.

Hard Not To Like WWE Wrestling After This

Yogi says...

OH come on don't try to be like me. Yeah I think Cena is an outlier but my point is they don't market his stuff all that heavily so they could be doing more marketing than they do, but they don't because I think they realize it can be invasive.

I don't like the WWE specifically because they're bad at this wrestling thing now, they want to be all about the spectacle and nothing of substance. Which was basically your critique and I was more or less agreeing with you while pointing out certain things that make you look like a dick.

Because that's what's fun for me.

budzos said:

You're going to use an outlier like John Cena to make your general case? That doesn't seem intelligent.

What's more, anyone who makes a joke like "Only the WWE could get me to cheer for Cancer!" and then gets offended by what I've said can suck my dick. Fuck you Yogi. i'm serious. You sanctimonious cunt.

Who has the softer heart? (Men or Women?)

Yogi says...

So instead of addressing my concerns about your argument, you go on a diatribe about feminism which essentially derails your own post about how this is about medical research being held back.

You're basically proving that I'm right, you chose this because you wanted a platform to punch feminism in the face, not a venue which you can bring in an informed critique. This was supposed to begin a discussion, not set up your soapbox.

What a worthless fucking stupid cunt you are.

Agreed, I know nothing of the composer and tend to critique music based upon personal preferences of sound, harmonics and vibration and where it affects me according to my own set of parameters.

i think most of you are missing the point that tom jenkinson is and has always been making, which is to pull complex and emotionally driven music from both man and machine by pushing both to extremes. to say it's "soulless" is to wear your confirmation bias and ignorance on your sleeve.

Teens React to....Nirvana

Esoog says...

IMO, the best quote from that video: "They sound the same when they're live!"
That might be my main critique about any band. If they cant sound as good live, as they do on studio tracks, I have no respect for them. There are too many studio produced artists who suck when they perform live.

White Girlfriend in Harlem Barbershop

pensword says...

Racism in the US is exclusively anti-black racism. I don't think black people can be racist against white people. Discrimination, maybe. But its still not the same= there is not an entire society backing it up. Anti-black racism carries with it an enormous historic force of precedent that remains in Amerikkka today. A black person is shot by the police every 26 hours there.

Its not just about individual ignorance. Its a consciousness that is reflecting economic relations that the US is built on, mainly slavery and its later apartheid forms.

This video remains interesting, but there are actual substantive arguments to be made against inter-racial relationships that it doesn't elaborate. Mainly, a systematic critique of whiteness and the many forms of anti-black racism, some subtle, some not so much, that are bound to come up in inter-racial relationships.

The Idiot's Guide to Smart People: Music

chingalera says...

Excellent article CE. As someone who misses reading knowledgeable liner notes and critiques of form and structure, and listens to a well-balanced slathering of all kinna sounds, including Norwegian death metal, trad jazz, rockabilly, or forty-minute Ravi Shankar jams...Even dig me some traditional hymns and marching band from time to time. Fuck, I'd sing that Muslim adhan from a minaret in Morocco if they'd let me make-up my own words.

One Woman Band Plays Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box"

chingalera says...

S'ok for a gal havin' fun with some equipment-Always hated this fuckin' tune, s'all I heard people fawning-over in the 90s while grunge-pop was leaving that void of dark matter in rock and roll universe... Decent untrained voice, cheesy props....Kept wishing she'd spill that pretentious glass of whatever red wine she put up there to let everyone know she's hip. Meh meh meh.

Comes form having been critiqued over and over again, sorry folks. It's called honesty tinctured with asshole.

How a River Log Drive Works

Asmo says...

While I don't disagree with the critique, "doing what you can with what you got" comes to mind.

In the absence of any other mass moving method, this seems logical if not environmentally aware in the slightest.

newtboy said:

Damn loggers, you crazy!
It looked like they lost 1/2 the logs in the streams, and just destroyed the stream beds and fish. How was this ever a good idea?
Looked awesome though.

To J.K. Rowling, from Cho Chang

Her response to critiques of this performance impressed me more than the actual performance. She sounds intelligent and talented enough to write her own children's books, should she decide to set the record straight with the youngin's as well.

An even groovier Dancing Girl (with headphones) -Of Montreal

chingalera says...

That's your interpretation of a comment that has no basis in the personal observation or critique. No hate. No cry of "piece of shit'. She looks like she's having fun, her dancing is mediocre, and she'd be hired on-the-spot at a mediocre strip joint, as she seems to exude sexuality and enjoy flaunting it on camera for the world. She seems to appreciate, as does Zawash, her own ass quite a bit. Didn't say she wasn't comely, only critiquing her moves compared to what?? It's an opinion Yogi, based on a personal preference.
What is , 'professional' anyway Yogi? What IS Dancing? Where's the degradation beyond your perception of my comparative analysis and perhaps a personal preference for red-heads from Ireland??

The chicks' having fun with her pal, who is in my estimation, is a much groovier dancer. Feeeeel better now Nancy??

Yogi said:

She seems like a fine dancer, does everyone have to be professional or else they're a piece of shit that deserves nothing be degradation and hate?

Statism Is Dead ~ The Matrix As A Metaphor

kevingrr says...

I studied English and Philosophy in school and have continued reading a lot of utopian/dystopian literature since. My familiarity with economics and economic history pales in contrast, but the close relationship with subjects I am interested in has caused me to spend some time and consideration learning what I can.

That said, when I see a video like this I lump it into the same pseudo intellectual/science/news that things like Bill O'Reilly, TYT, Kirk Cameron, Creationists and bigots bring to mind.

Why did I watch this? Well I'm open to listening to legitimate and informative critiques of socioeconomic systems. If they are particularly good it can lead to all sorts of follow up questions and inquiries. I get bored while i'm "slaving" away at work so I put things on in the background...

Then there videos like this. There are very few facts throughout the entire video. The analogies used are misleading. The terrible acts and downfalls of groups, individuals, or particular ideologies are often blown out of proportion entirely. There is no nuanced investigation, no insights, nothing but a self satisfied narrator with droll delivery.

Thanks for rummaging through my videos for dead links. I'll pass on using my downvote on this video.
