Doesn't change the fact that Zimmerman was white. Yeah, anyone can be racist, but the dynamics in this case aren't colorblind. Zimmerman's racial status in his own eyes and in the eyes of the local police had no small role in his actions and the (lack of) police response.

Eh..... I dunno dude. Could you define what you would consider as 'White'? Because for me, this dude would be considered Latino. Their skin may be 'light', but they ain't white.

In the US census, hispanic is considered an ethnicity, not a race. You can be a black hispanic, a white hispanic, or an american indian hispanic.

I've got to say, when I first heard the tape (before all this "coon" stuff started) it sounded to me like he said "fucking punks". That's still what I hear, but I can also believe that he said "coons". Still, though, it seems to me that there's enough doubt about what he's saying that we shouldn't get carried away with this.

If this guy and his family are a bunch of racists, and it runs through the generations. "Coon" is definitely a word I can see them using, especially since if someone heard you say it you could always say you meant "raccoon". I could see this word being used a lot in the Kentucky/Tennessee area for both reasons and specifically because it's easy to use as a masked derogatory. "Coon" come around this house and I'll shoot em.

Before it's all over, I'm guessing we'll find out Zimmerman was off his meds and suffers from some kind of mental illness that makes him super paranoid. Plus him being a racist plays right into all the paranoia "they always get away". I still think his family is connected though, because at the very least the cops could look good and get him off the hook (assuming all the cops are closet racists themselves) if they portrayed him as mentally ill. But they aren't doing anything but covering (and covering up via witness tampering) for him.

I grew up and am living again in the deep south, and even here (where "coon" was first used as a racial slur) it would probably be considered old-timey. I definitely heard it when I was a kid, but I doubt I've heard the word used in anything but a facetious manner in 20+ years.

I have trouble imagining an under-30 Hispanic-man using that word. Isn't it kind of... really really outdated?

No.

Admittedly I live in the Midwest, and there's going to be a lot of regional variation in the pejoratives of choice, but I've never heard anyone born in the second half of the 20th century use that word.
Edit: Okay, that's an exaggeration, and I really mean people being born after like... 1960 or so. But still. The Oldentimes called, Mr. Zimmerman. They want their word back.

The TYT crew missed an important part of the 911 call.
I missed it too--a YouTube comment pointed this out.
At 2:19 you can hear Zimmerman say under his breath, "fucking coons."

That sure will get noticed in court though.... err, I hope. The publicity around this thing has made it too dangerous to ignore. Too many people want to watch this guy go down so now they can't bury it.
God damnit I meant that to be in thread. ooops.
