Top Gear hosts make fun of Mexicans

mentality says...

>> ^Deano:
As an Englishman if I spent my days explaining we don't all have crap teeth, live in Castles, are rubbish in bed and dress like tramps I'd never leave the house.
This has reminded me of a program in Jeremy Clarkson's CV that might be interesting. Called Jeremy Clarkson meets the Neighbours he travelled around Europe seeing if people matched their stereotypes. And then at the end a representive from that country would be interviewed and happily mock their nation.

As it was pointed out in Steve Coogan's article, there is a huge difference between rich white people making fun of other rich white people, and rich white people making fun of mexicans. For example, the same racist joke can be perfectly acceptable coming from a black comedian, but quite offensive when told by a white comedian.

I imagine that there's not much exposure to Mexicans in Britain, and perhaps Britain is spared the tension between different races, cultures, and social/economic status that long marred American history. So out of sheer ignorance I guess Hammond's joke could seem quite harmless.

Just out of curiosity, how would people react if an Englishman said similarly degrading things about the Scottish or Indians? (though I'm sure Scotland is much better off than Mexico)

I'm with you. I think I've seen pretty much everything he's done now, if that's possible. Zach, Patton Oswalt and Louis CK are my fav comedians these days. At least, American comedians. Have you seen the HBO series 'Bored to Death'? Zach's in it, along with Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson, of all people. Very gentle comedy, but much fun. I've been getting into that and Community of late. Oh, and "The Trip" from the UK (Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon - I've sifted a couple of clips). Feel free to drop some names of stuff you'd recommend.

Wicked, I have to dig that out, read about it when I found this video. I was introduced to Zach by my fella when he showed me The Snuggler, and I never looked back. I'm working my way up to crazy stalker fan right now

Not at all. I presume this was filmed during the Comedians of Comedy tour. The doco of that tour introduced me to Zach - brilliant stuff.

Coogan and Brydon - Drink it

Deano says...

>> ^kymbos:

I think we've disagreed on comedy before, Deano - but you're back in form here.

The one thing I might disagree upon is how improvised it is. I would normally expect virtually every line to have been carefully scripted with maybe a few things changed or added on the day.

Coogan and Brydon - Drink it

Deano says...

I don't find much on tv to be worth watching but this has been a glorious and unexpected exception. Final episode is tomorrow.

I'd say Coogan has been pretty brave with this storyline, musing on his insecurities about a career in decline.

BTW they both did brill impressions of Woody Allen in episode 5.
