Trump: Biden Will "listen to the scientists"

StukaFox says...

Dude, have you BEEN to Carson City? Due to familial attachments, I find myself in that berg about once a year. The people are nice enough, but this ain't exactly Mensa's fishing grounds. I needed a computer fixed, so I go to the address of the local computer repair guy. I get there and it's actually a pool hall lined with Hombres' bikes. I thought, "I don't give a shit if this is a Cray, I'm not going in there."

That fucking computer is STILL broken and I haven't been back since Covid hit.

I'm going to try my best to not sound condescending here, but this is why I build/fix/operate/fiddle with/smash my own computers. It does not even register in my mind the concept of having to ship off a computer of mine somewhere or leave it in a shop to be repaired and being in the hands of someone else. If something ever goes wrong on my computer to me its just a few hours of my time repairing it.
I guess that is the tradeoff though right there, my free time for free computer repair. Even worse when everyone who knows me always tries to get free repairs too

So you also fabricate all the parts for your computers out of your magic rectum? Or you buy off-the-shelf parts from wal-mart? Or you get them shipped to you by Newegg?

Point being, if you pay for overnight shipping, you fucking expect overnight shipping. Doesn't matter that it happens to be a missing computer. It could have just as easily have been your Swedish Made Penis Enlargement Pump. If you wanted it tomorrow, and payed to get it by tomorrow, then you have every right to be pissed off if you can't even ask where it is until three days later.

Spy camera shows PC Repair scams and privacy violations

Deano says...

As a Londoner I see loads of these computer repair shops with their decrepit bits of hardware gathering dust in the window. It helps that I'm PC-literate but I would never trust this lot. You just have to walk in and sample the atmosphere. I even got taken in by one of them many years ago when I was desperate to get a dot-matrix printer fixed.
Instead make friends with someone who knows their stuff and buy them drinks to keep it all sweet.

This does remind me of working in internal support for an IT company (biggish systems integrator) and seeing some very dodgy usenet groups on a salesman's laptop while restoring his email.

Bitte schön. That video was so badly out of sync it made my brain hurt. I guess I wasn't alone, 'cause someone felt the need to title theirs "The synced version"!

Speed up your Work - Master the Windows Key

southblvd says...

I knew all but the Win+Pause/Break one. That could've been handy many years doing computer repair.

He forgot about Win+L to lock the computer. Handy at work when you're running out to lunch and don't want anyone messing with your machine.

Getting Gouged by Geeks

messenger says...

I used to do in-home computer repair, and I was always amazed at how easily I convinced people to buy the parts I suggested. I was always honest, but amazed at how little I had to pressure them to follow my recommendation. It's seriously easy pickings.
