I can also tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.>> ^westy:

Title 18 United States Code, Section 333
Mutilation of national bank obligations
Whoever mutilates, cuts, defaces, disfigures, or perforates, or unites
or cements together, or does any other thing to any bank bill, draft,
note, or other evidence of debt issued by any national banking
association, or Federal Reserve bank, or the Federal Reserve System,
with intent to render such bank bill, draft, note, or other evidence
of debt unfit to be reissued, shall be fined under this title or
imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Its ok I can tell by the pixels that it was a compute generated bank note.

Half-Life: Beyond Black Mesa fan movie

While these sorts of shorts are technically impressive, I find them otherwise pretty boring and not very watchable, even when I'm interested in the source material. They need to focus on storytelling elements and not just computer generated effects.

Ep 3's coming, dont ya worry... my money's on an E3 2011 announcement.

Bowling Juggle Accident

Simply THE most realistic CGI I've EVER seen!

Amazing 3D Video Mapping on Physical Objects

Arg says...

Ha! All the time I was watching it I just thought it was a completely computer generated image with a shaky-cam effect added to enhance the realism. After reading the comments I had to go back and watch it again to appreciate how cool an effect it really is.

Hail Mary - Pomplamoose

dannym3141 says...

I vote for more honesty in these video titles/descriptions in the recent spam of music videos from this particular group.

Video title like "Watch this to get a boner over the plain girl"
And descriptions such as "I have a nerd crush on this stunningly bland girl in the top right section of the screen"

I think they turn up for recordings with a hazy idea and it goes like this:

So what are we doin today?
Dunno, just gonna jam a little, edit into something usable.
Ok then i'll just sing a computer generated set of lyrics in the little childlike cutesy voice i always use, right?
Right.

-- 5 mins later --

Well there's another hit! See you tomorrow! I've got a date with some internet guy who watched one of our videos and thinks i can't do any better because i'm not conventionally 'hot' but more tending towards 'cute' in a nerdy way. Cya!

Googled

davethegame says...

The voice was not computer generated, just a very talented voice over with occasional distortion effects added.

Those of you who think this is some kind of anti-Google screed... well, I'd say watch it again

Googled

MaxWilder says...

The voice reminded me of the Anonymous vids. I suppose that was completely computer generated though.

Anyway, cool short. But nothing really new except the google angle. New fears, same as the old fears.

Hand-Drawn Holograms

billb says...

> Grr, it's not a hologram.

spoco2, go to the website and read FAQ entry 9 (links below)

These are Benton Rainbow Holograms where the spacing between fringes is wider than normal.

Rainbow holograms are based only on fringe angle and not fringe spacing. They are size-independent; that's why they reconstruct with incoherent white-light illumination. With Benton Holograms, the distance between fringes is irrelevant. With Benton Holograms, the fringes can be drawn by hand. Apparently nobody realized this until I saw the phenomenon occurring naturally when someone polished a car hood with a gritty cloth.

> Holograms are a recording of light from other objects such that

So you're saying that Computer Generated holograms aren't holograms, since their zoneplates are drawn by computer? Really? If CG holograms are holograms, then so are mine.

> These are not holograms.

If you knew how those Rainbow Holograms on credit cards actually worked, perhaps you'd be angry when people called them by the name "hologram." If my Hand Drawn holograms aren't real holograms, then Rainbow holograms aren't real holograms either.

Wow, this technology is truly awesome. A great big leap for the visual effects industry. I'm sure there are many movie ideas which suddenly become feasible with these techniques.
I have seen the movie and I could quite easily spot that the face was computer generated. But that didn't detract from the movie at all because the face did show convincing expressions and emotions. Certainly if you compare it with Beowulf or The Polar Express it's miles ahead. And I'm sure that this technology will only get better.
Can't believe this hasn't gotten more votes. Maybe you should add *no spoilers* in the title

3D printer used in Coraline animation

Wow, if only they could streamline this with some kind of computer-machine that could model clay-like characters in virtual space!

I'm sorry but it's just not the same. With Stop-Motion you can see the attention to detail, where the animators have touched the objects between frames. You can't get that kind of reality from computer generated images.
