Putin was interviewed by a German public broadcaster. A video of it can be found here, but it's in Russian/German, unsurprisingly. As of now, RT is the only source I found for a proper English translation of the entire interview.

Anyway, it is quite disturbing to once again see just how different it sounds from what is being reported about him. The press make him sound like a power-crazed looney, yet of all the heads of state, this old spook is just about the only stable, calm, composed and diplomatic entity in the entire discussion. They call him out for an apparent unwillingness to talk, yet there he is, offering one olive branch after another.

Poroshenko is talking about getting ready for total war, yet to the media, and to folks like Abbott and Cameron, everything bad about the situation can be traced back to Putin.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: the way the press and some state officials are pushing for an open conflict with Russia, a century after the start of the First World War, 75 years after the start of the Second World War, sends chills down my spine. It is pure madness on a scale I thought we had overcome by now.

time lapse video of the biggest sunspot in 22 years

eric3579 says...

The solar flares are very cool. I suggest watching in HD and full screen for maximum awesomeness.

Also from YT description:

The surface of the sun from October 14th to 30th, 2014, showing sunspot AR 2192, the largest sunspot of the last two solar cycles (22 years). During this time sunspot AR 2191 produced six X-class and four M-class solar flares. The animation shows the sun in the ultraviolet 304 ångström wavelength, and plays at a rate of 52.5 minutes per second. It is composed of more than 17,000 images, 72 GB of data produced by the solar dynamics observatory (http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/) + (http://www.helioviewer.org/). This animation has be rendered in 4K, and resized to the Youtube maximum resolution of 3840×2160. The animation has been rotated 180 degrees so that south is 'up'. The audio is the "heartbeat" of the sun, processed from SOHO HMI data by Alexander G. Kosovichev. Image processing and animation by James Tyrwhitt-Drake.

Amazing Drone Video by a Talented Amateur

lucky760 says...

It's homemade because it's just some guy who bought a drone and flew it around composing professional-looking videos.

I wouldn't imagine he'd have to build a drone from spare parts and only record video inside his home for the video to be validly considered homemade.

[edit]
It was a grammar issue. Post re-titled.

cool video, but title is kinda misleading. The drone is a DJI Phantom2, with a zenmuse h3-3d gimbal mount.

Not sure how you would call it "homemade".

Sen. Whitehouse debunks climate change myths

orintau says...

Newtboy said it well; ice ages come and go due to numerous factors, but one of the most important factors is how much of the atmosphere is composed of carbon dioxide and methane.

Indeed, there have been interglacial periods where the earth was largely void of ice and had the much higher sea levels to match. At one point global temperatures were about as high as is expected to occur in the next century or two.

The difference between then and now is that life and the ecological chemistry of earth had millions of years to adapt before those periods reached their height in most cases. I say in most cases because there have been periods where climate change occurred faster than before and severely disrupted ecological stability or simply caused mass extinctions. Climate change has always happened, but the reason why current climate change is so worrying is because it is happening faster than ever before and because there is a massive amount of data to back it up.

My understanding, and I am not a scientist, has been that the oceans are most responsible for conveying heat from warmer equatorial regions towards cooler polar regions.

If diluting the ocean's waters makes those currents *better* at transferring heat, then would the heating of the polar regions accelerate as freshwater is added to the oceans and salinity is diluted? If this was the case why would warm periods between ice ages ever stop short of melting polar ice caps completely? And what causes ice ages to come and go?

SPK - In Flagrante Delicto (1986)

PikapAndropov says...

Some years ago I spent quite a while looking for this particular piece of music without know what it was called or that SPK was the group responsible. All I knew was that it was part of the Dead Calm score composed by Graeme Revell. Once I had learned more about his music career and looked into this strange musical monster he was part of it wasn't long after that I found what I had been seeking--but those were the days of Kazaa and finding tracks by obscure industrial/noise groups wasn't easy.

Hey, get a grip.

They missed that.

Fun, but what a disappointing performance. They didn't do the song justice. Did Michael Bay compose this version?

chingalera says...

Agreed, I know nothing of the composer and tend to critique music based upon personal preferences of sound, harmonics and vibration and where it affects me according to my own set of parameters.

i think most of you are missing the point that tom jenkinson is and has always been making, which is to pull complex and emotionally driven music from both man and machine by pushing both to extremes. to say it's "soulless" is to wear your confirmation bias and ignorance on your sleeve.

I dunno man, you listen to some of those insane compositions by Nancarrow and a few of them kinna suck you in-It helps to get into the mind of composer a bit, the guy might have been reclusive and maybe a touch autistic and you can maybe perform some interpretive dance (seizure) to his comps but I regard most music as novelty anyhow....

Check this one found recently along the same lines of attack-Impossible for one person to play alone, but I'll betcha two people side-by-side on the same piano could do it...

spawnflagger said:

There have been many "unplayable by humans" compositions for the Player Piano dating back 100 years. IMHO, they sound very unnatural and not something I'd listen to more than once for a curiosity. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should.

That said, this robot band is way better than Chuck E' Cheese's. Add in a holographic singer, and would be a huge success in Japan.

Tricky ~ She Makes Me Wanna Die ~ Fanmade

chingalera says...

That's a good question-I've heard more than a few remixes of this tune it seems but, I'm pretty sure this one is from the soundtrack to the film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120008/soundtrack 1998

There's another album from the flick that's the original score composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.

The Imaginary Friend Machine

Babymech says...

This is important material and should be shown to school classes around the world. They need to know that they can be as entirely composed of bullshit as Peter Molininja and still keep on getting paid and paid and paid. there should also be a piece on David Cage in there.

Americans Taste Test Australian Snacks

chingalera says...

No, I'm representative of someone who thinks for themselves and for the creative spark that's left this house of cards circle-jerk of back-patters and party-liners. We also have Mar-mite and Vegemite jars in the fridge, Kylie Minogue's discography among the music selections in the hard-drive, and have tripped-balls playing the didgeridoo on several occasions.

We can also throat-sing, change a diaper, prepare delicious meals, compose music, be both a jerk and a sweetheart, clean a fish, pan for gold, grow vegetables, train dogs (and cats), service automobiles and small engines, and build a PC from parts down to the computer-supply store. Just your average human being.

Thank god for insects, Aussies and Yanks, and newts.

Kalle,

That said...vegemite on ANYTHING??? The totally nasty 'vitamin and caster oil like' paste is inedible to anyone not raised on it...as I'm sure are many American tastes.

Extreme Soil Liquefaction

garmachi says...

Liquefaction is caused by extremely fast and regular vibrations in a substance composed of uniformly sized particles. The shakiness of that video induced the phenomenon.

The shakiness of the video made it headache inducing.

Kevin O'Leary on global inequality: "It's fantastic!"

Trancecoach says...

"The world is infested by armed gangs that call themselves governments. These people presume that they have a right to order us around, to take our money and other property as they please, and to make our lives as miserable as their interest and caprice dictate. Their numerous victims, unfortunately, often accept these preposterous presumptions as natural and proper. The development of this absurd situation goes back for millennia, and along the way many philosophers and others have offered various rationales for what is, on its face, a stupid and destructive arrangement of human affairs. Whatever the proffered explanations and rationales, however, most people accept the situation out of nothing but habit: it existed when they came into the world, and they never stumbled across any pressing reason to question or challenge it. Yet, very little serious thought is required to grasp its many absurdities and to become perplexed that human beings ever allowed themselves to submit so meekly to their own degradation and exploitation by the minority political class that composes the governments, their cronies, and their accomplices."
