Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize

qruel says...

of interest

Over the course of the last year, George W. Bush has offered his personal congratulations to the 2007 Presidential Scholars, the Super Bowl-winning Indianapolis Colts, the 2007 Scripps Spelling Bee champion, the owner of the World Series-winning St. Louis Cardinals, the NBA champion Miami Heat, the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes and the NCAA champions from 21 universities.

So, a reporter asked deputy White House press secretary Tony Fratto today, will the president be calling Al Gore to congratulate him for winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Fratto's response: "I don't know of any plans to make calls to any of the winners at this point."

Weapons of US soldiers in Iraq 'plagued with problems'

AeroMechanical says...

I don't recall exactly, and I haven't time to find a source but I believe he may really have a grudge. I recall that it was a fella working at Colt (presumably this guy) who designed the rifle, but the company lost interest when it seemed like the Army didn't want it, and sold the design off to another company (Armalite, I believe). At any rate, it was a little scandalous because it ended up as a gigantic contract.

I'll post an edit if I find a source. Sorry for all the vaguery.

I'm not a soldier, but I've heard from various friends that thought the M-16 was a fine rifle. They said the Kalashnikov is great for soldiers with no training, no cleaning kits and poorly manufactured ammunition, but they would rather have an M-16. I have fired both on a range and I preferred the M-16- it was more comfortable to use.

Weapons of US soldiers in Iraq 'plagued with problems'

this made me curious, so I did a little research about my own country.
since 1967, norway used the AG-3, which is a variant of the heckler and koch G-3. This, or next year, they are switching for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch_HK416

The switching process started in the 90's, and it took them 11 years to arrive at a decision for the HK416. The argument was not so much about which weapon, but about which type of ammo to use; the lighter 5,56mm or the heavier but more penetrating 7,62. the decision was finally made for the 5,56mm.
other guns that were concidered were: Colt Canada C8, Heckler and Kock G36, FN SCAR and FN2000 (famous from the game splinter cell) and some others. These weapons were also all evaluated in the field on missions in for example afghanistan.

100,000 Paper Caps Explosion

Fletch says...

We used to hit these with rocks on the sidewalk in front of the house when I was a kid (late 60s, early 70s). Capguns were fun, too. My Colt must have killed more German soldiers than there were real German soldiers, and it beat yelling "uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-uh!"

Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan raid Taliban stronghold

Our Canadian variant is really not materially different from the M16, so the reliability would be the same (and it's true the weapon sometimes has trouble coping with sandy environments). The internal workings are pretty much identical except that the automatic fire mode is really full auto, not 3-round burst. Apart from that you can move the trigger guard out of the way for firing when wearing thick arctic mitts (which we do in cold winter weather), and the weapon is made in Canada, licensed to Diemaco from Colt. That's about all.

Super Bowl XLI Highlight Video

Farhad2000 says...

Honestly, team wise both the Colts and Bears had great line ups, it all came down to what the QB's could bring, and Rex Grossman has been the question mark all along, he's just not at Peyton Mannings level.

yeah that was cool.

the weather definately affected play with the colts running a tight defence and taking their chances.the game lamed out toward the end with the bears just not being able to dig anytihng out.

Prince: The Superbowl Show (1 of 2)

Farhad2000 says...

Gwaan I would disagree with you on that.

I watched the game and it was awesome, Devin Hester's kickoff TD was just too much to handle at the bar I was at. The rest was Peyton Manning basically solidify his place in the NFL Hall of Fame. Rex Grossman failing his team by getting sacked twice in a row. The Colts had a better team and wanted it more then the Bears.

The half time show I thought was pretty shit. Ever since that Janet Jackson debacle they haven't really had any modern stars in the half time shows. Sad.

Marines Seige FAllujah (1 bad word in beginning)

The entire AR15 range needs to be replaced but Colt is putting pressure on the government to stick with them. It's beyond belief. H&K fully completed the replacement but Colt objected because it claimed there was no fair competition but then Colt made no effort to improve their guns at all!

It is really terrifying that big corporations can control the US governemnt so much that the troops aren't even given reliable weapons. At least my government (UK) allowed the SA80 to be fixed, which was also done by H&K.
