You haven't watched 30 Rock? It's sublime.

What to watch - the Sopranos or the Wire? (1sttube Talk Post)

I'll give my opinion only because we seem to enjoy the same stuff. My three favorite TV series of all time are West Wing, Deadwood and The Sopranos. I however have never watched The Wire. I also enjoyed Carnivale, and would consider it my fourth favorite.

Well, you've totally got to watch The Wire then. Omar from that show is the true inheritor of Al Swearengen's legacy. A scheming, ruthless, brilliant, terrifying, loveable, huggable murderer.

I totally concur that Deadwood was the best thing ever produced for television. The Wire is a close 2nd, so my vote is for that.

Also worth consideration:

Carnivale- also prematurely cancelled after 2 seasons. A little more esoteric by definition.

I Clavdivs: Very much in the Deadwood vein, a little bit cheesey by today's standards, but definitely quality drama. Also much less of a commitment, only 13 episodes in total, but it is a complete story arc.

What Do We Watch Next? (Blog Entry by deputydog)

24 was good up to series 3; it really peaked at series 2 though. If you do watch it stop at 3. Same with ER, as you noted.

Carnivale was good, but unfortunately got canceled, so you'll have that to contend with. Haven't seen any of the others on your list as I haven't had cable since 2003. And I'm all the better for it!

Interesting reactions... all of them quite wrong.
nah, I have to agree with shuac re: season 2. i dunno why PerfectlySane thought it was plotless though... knauf had actually planned out a whole buncha stuff. you're not confusing this with 'lost'?

oh, and carnivale came first, legacy0100.

Actually, it kind of is an exception. Let me tell you why.

The first season was great. It was eerie, creepy, subtle, mystifying but in a good way, it took its time, and best of all it was all very ambiguous. You never knew what to expect and it was very much like a real freak show. It was damned compelling TV.

Then came season two and the clear (to me anyway) directive from HBO to make it more accessible. S2 plot points were suddenly being hand fed to us. The story continued but the subtlety was gone. I lost interest by the 5th or 6th show of season two for this reason.

And the old argument that "they never gave this show a chance" is pure B.S. because HBO promoted the hell out of this show. I'm not quoting any sifter above but it's a very very common complaint when fans commiserate about the cancellation of their favorite shows. The numbers were not strong for season two, the effect of which is no different for pay cable services, so it was pulled.

Firefly, on the other hand, was doomed to fail because of Fox's many programming blunders, which is the subject for another sift.

One thing about Carnivale was certain. It had the best theme music I think I've ever heard. It fit the theme of the story itself brilliantly: it was both dark and light, subtle and mystifying.
