Hahaha, proof that Gizmodo is full of tech-bigots.

... or not? http://gizmodo.com/5065133/the-truth-about-the-apple-tax Interesting.

Seriously, I learned to compute on C64s, GUIs on a B&W Mac, trackballs on an ICON, how to suffer in DOS4.2, how to overcome suffering in DOS6.0, how to be tempted with throwing things out of windows with a defective 1st gen blueberry iMac, the glories of Linux with our webserver, the agony of said webserver being wiped out without a backup because my techie didn't have one for some reason, and the happiness of an employee-generated copy of Vista.

I've experienced the glory joy and pain of many different forms of tech. Bring it on moreso.

Battle Chess - Game Play

Memorare says...

God, 20 years ago...

I was doing some contract programming for Interplay at the time, porting C64 Neuromancer to the Amiga, when ceo Brian Fargo called me over and said "Hey take a look at this", and showed me the pre-release Battle Chess. I went "OOOOOH!" He said "yeah, that's the reaction we're going for!"

Too bad all those low/mid level coding jobs are no longer available in this country, was a great way to earn a living.

Archon on the C64 was fun. The health of a piece during a battle also mattered on the color square that they were on, which also varied from turn-to-turn. Then the wizards had limited spells they could use. It was one of my favorite games.

I didn't get pranked by anything like this, but I remember I spent a while insisting I be shown the PC was turned off and unplugged before I would go to bed. For some reason the ending to a Ghostbusters game on my dad's old C64 (the part with the Marshmallow Man parading in front of a building) completely creeped me out.

Depending on the image shown it could have a bit of an after effect, I guess, but I'm with the others who think that nothing like this would result in any serious mental scarring. Worst case is she won't go near the PC for a month or so...

I mean, it didn't do me any lasting harm and I was petrified of that damned C64 for at least a couple of weeks. *looks over shoulder to make sure the Marshmallow Man isn't creeping up on me*

I always loved the first level music!

Same here! I especially liked the dropship sequence music. Actually, all the music was pretty good (at least for what it was at the time). You an old C64 head too? Always dug the soundtrack to Ballblazer too.

Want to hear it again? http://www.hvsc.c64.org/ (I have a feeling that you already know about this site, as aren't you the same Ant from Blues? I've been reading his site for years now and remember you from the 'Thanks'!)

Regardless, thanks for the promote!

Starglider intro on Atari ST

Zonbie says...

LOL I remember this! My brother had this on his ST I was only 10 when I saw this - the music was awesome because it wasn't a MIDI track but sampled! WOW, I think a sizeable chunk of disk 1 was that track

(remember "sizeable" of 720K!)

From Wiki - for those who remember
Starglider is a 3D video game released in 1986 by Rainbird. It was developed by Argonaut Software, led by programmer Jez San. The game was inspired by Jez San's love of the 1983 Atari coin-op Star Wars,[1] It was a fast-moving, first-person combat flight simulator, rendered with colourful wireframe vector graphics. The game took place over the surface of the occupied planet Novenia, and it was the player's goal to rid the world of the mechanised Egron invaders. To this end the player was equipped with a high-performance AGAV fighter aircraft, which was armed with lasers and television-guided missiles.

Starglider was originally developed by Argonaut Software for the 16-bit Commodore Amiga and Atari ST machines. Rainbird also commissioned Realtime Games to produce 8-bit versions for the Amstrad CPC, Amstrad PCW, and ZX Spectrum (128k, with a cut-down 48k version without sampled speech or special missions), and also for the IBM-compatible PC running in CGA. Solid Images were commissioned to produce versions for the Commodore C64 and Apple IIGS. Most versions included then-novel sampled speech, from Rainbird employee Clare Edgeley.[1]

Starglider was packaged with a sci-fi novella by James Follett, describing the game's background story

It was followed in 1988 by the sequel, Starglider 2.
